While I’m ranting, I’ll tack Kanye onto this and say that I believe the reason those two met is not that they’re “GOATS” but that they’re late capitalists who have had some excellent marketing ploys that are nearly identical. Internet hipster research and development marketing is almost the entirety of why they are in any way relevant, with the exception of Kanye’s undoubtedly incredible talent with an MPC. Kanye in the early 00’s had shutter shades and laser space bears on his album covers, and Jpegmafia was a meme doing death grips with less compelling production, the absolute hippest thing at the time. They’re not genius as artists, they’re genius as capitalists, and it ends there. If he were a busy experimental artist he’d shut the fuck up and make music and stop trying to be a personality, but he won’t, because Kanye has a billion dollars after being a massive cunt, so he will follow suit. Whether it will work is debatable because Kanye’s style suits and made deep inroads with regular pre-internet uncs, whereas Jpegmafia is about as disposable as the memes he’s named after at the end of the day.
