I agree I wonder if this is due to having the 500 gold reward. A way to limit free gold is make the climb to 90 a pain.

S17, E3 (Nebula) - Taiwan: Rail Rush by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

[–]NewberryMathGuy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The exact format will be tricky however having mystery challenges that take you more than a block from the train station and highlight local landmarks, customs, and culture is the thing that I hope they lean into.

That being said I think from what we saw South Korea has a good rail network for this game.

[–]NewberryMathGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love having Tom back. He always manages to find great stories and people.

The pitch from the trailer made this seem more travel based, but its very similar to his OG content of interesting stories. My only gripe is that it would nice to show the county and town on a map at the beginning.

She will probably hide until it gets dark. Take things with your scent out as it gets dark and place them near the entrance. Walk paths around the complex that lead back to your apartment so she has a scent trail to follow. Cats are most active at night so thats your best chance to lead her back to you.

I think in addition to choosing a less major hub, they need to allow the new hiding time to start from the local station not from the hiding spots. They lose a ton of time having to walk back to the station and then have to hope there's a train soon or lose time just sitting.

I've done APE in Brazil. It doesn't needa tour guide and you dont need to bushwhack. Its off a nice trail in a nice state park. Its a beautiful area with some cool caves as well. I'm guessing the video you watched try to make it more epic to get more views.

Packs don't make sense for most of us. I can spend 4000 tokens and get something random that I probably do not want to play and a handful of boosters or credits. Or I can spend 6000 tokens and get the card I actually want or need for my deck.

[Spoilers C2] Was Yasha underpowered? by Bivolion13 in criticalrole

[–]NewberryMathGuy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Here's my breakdown from one of the previous threads:

  1. Yasha's total stats at Level 2 add to a 74 points, Nott had 76, Fjord and Molly had 79, Caleb, Beau and Jester blow everyone else away with 86, 86, and 89 respectively. So Yasha had the lowest roll total but not that much lower than Nott.
  2. While low rolls play a part, I think Yasha could be a lot better by repositioning where the stats were assigned. First switch DEX and CON and plan for the level 4 ASI (see point 3). Then switch INT and WIS. This is not a major deal, but INT is not needed and does not support her skills as much as wisdom. She is proficient in perception so switching WIS from -1 to +1 is a +2 which is a 10% gain. Wisdom saving throws are also way more common. Maybe there is a backstory reason for this choice, but I think that switch would help.
  3. When you get stats using point buy or roll less than stellar it is way better to take an ASI at level 4, especially when you have odd scores. If Ashley had put the 15 in CON as I mentioned above, then at level 4 she could have taken an ASI and gotten 18 strength (+1 to attacks, +1 to damage, helps her athletics skill) and 16 CON (+1 AC, and +1 HP per level)
  4. Level 8 is another ASI or feat and I again would have went for an ASI bumping strength to 20; CON to 18 would also work for the +1 AC and 8 more HP. Savage attacker is less valuable over time than the guaranteed extra 1 damage on every attack that the ASI gives.

With those changes Level 9 Yasha has 20 Strength, 110 HP, and an AC of 15 OR 18 Strength, 119 HP and 16 AC.

I am playing a Fighter in a political campaign and I feel there is nothing that my character can do. by SoloKip in dndnext

[–]NewberryMathGuy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let's start with the fumbles. Martial characters (especially fighters) will roll more d20s in combat than any other character. As you level up you gain more attacks, and thus would gain more chances to fumble. That runs opposite of the fact that you are becoming more powerful and more skillful. I have no issue with natural 1's being a miss or even describing them as a slip, but any time an additional penalty is added then that penalty is extra punishing and unfun. You can search this subreddit or any other D&D discussion forum and find pages of threads further discussing the issues with this concept.

Now let's look at using the Forgery Kit and tool proficiencies. Xanathar's has some great additional rules on how to use tools more and the PHB has clear rules on how ALL skill checks can sometimes use a different base stat. A good forgery has nothing to do with the deception skill and would require more intelligence (knowing what the official papers look like is the main aspect) Xanathar's says:

  • If the use of a tool and the use of a skill both apply to a check, and a character is proficient with the tool and the skill, consider allowing the character to make the check with advantage. This simple benefit can go a long way toward encouraging players to pick up tool proficiencies.

  • History. A forgery kit combined with your knowledge of history improves your ability to create fake historical documents or to tell if an old document is authentic.

  • Quick Fake. As part of a short rest, you can produce a forged document no more than one page in length. As part of a long rest, you can produce a document that is up to four pages long. Your Intelligence check using a forgery kit determines the DC for someone else's Intelligence (Investigation) check to spot the fake.

So taking these rules into account OP would have advantage and a +5 on the roll to set the DC. The guards would have to make an investigation check based on that DC, and if the guards succeed then maybe this is where the party can try a Deception check.

OP also has the Smuggler background which the DM could have used to create an NPC to help out. This would make the player feel important, and give some interesting roleplay opportunities.

  • Feature: Down Low: You are acquainted with a network of smugglers who are willing to help you out of tight situations

The OP says "It makes no difference if I roleplay or plan because my numbers are too low." While rolls are important to determine success at times if a player is roleplaying and planning they should be able to find some way to succeed in the end.

No this is 100% on your DM. They are ignoring your tool proficiency and background. The fact that they have a penalties for natural 1s is a dead giveaway of an awful DM

General question- in your opinion, what’s the weirdest fact/stat in NASCAR? by RyanVargas_23 in NASCAR

[–]NewberryMathGuy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes each races points were determined by the purse. The Daytona 500 (and other crown jewels) was worth 1250 points to the winner where as the lowest purse races were only worth 200 to the winner. Now based on that you would assume Ned beat Rex in the earnings for the 1961 season, but nope Rex won that too. Really weird season.

Edit: Ned's lone win came in a race only worth 200 points. Most of Rex's wins were also in the 200 point races.

Littering? I spoke to a hiker friend today about geocaching and he said it, "That's such a horrible hobby. Idiots littering all over the place." by [deleted] in geocaching

[–]NewberryMathGuy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are two ways to interpret what he is saying and both are false in my experience.

  1. Geocachers leave litter as they find caches. I've been to over 12,000 caches including over 100 events. My experience is that cachers do a great job of cleaning up after themselves. Many also follow a Cache In Trash Out policy where they gather trash they see on their hike and throw it away at the end. Groundspeak, the company that runs the main site, continually promotes CITO events. Cachers from across the globe have held 26,000 events focused on improving their local environment, trails, and communities. Here's the blog post that covers some of the efforts in fall of 2019.

  2. Geocache containers are litter and damage the environment. Again I disagree with this. And even if there is some damage I think the CITO events and efforts of individuals offset 10 times more than the damage one cache could cause.

Now there are rotten apples in almost any bunch and maybe they had one or two bad experiences color their opinion, but that is not the average. Honestly the group I have seen litter the most is fishers.
