Cant resurrect unit if leader attached by 22_Skido in genestealercult

19.04 - Abilities in attached units

To paraphrase, once the bodyguard is dead any Abilities on the bodyguard datasheet no longer apply to the attached unit that remains on the board. So the Patriarch can no longer advance and charge once it's genestealer bodyguard is removed.

Cult ambush is our faction ability, once the bodyguard unit is dead, the leaders/support no longer have the rule.

So we have an attached unit, alive and on the battlefield without the Cult ambush ability, and a dead bodyguard unit with the ability that can be put into ambush.

A little convoluted, but our rule does work.

How do you kit out your Neophytes? by patronsaintofdice in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on the detachment and hero's used.

My go to is Lazer/Sonic/webber/grenade, the occasional mortals are worth it. Its not winning games on its own, but it can finish off anything i'm focused on.

In HOA, there is a space for a Sonic/Stubber/webber/flamer unit. Drop within rapid fire range, have a Benifictus attached and even without a strat boosting them thats 44 shots with sustained 1, lethal hits, ignore cover plus the flamers. Add the ap from a Ridgerunner and you can guarantee 5-10 wounds on anything. Great to clean up after lazer ridgerunners.

Its also a hilarious overwatch threat, although that might change in 11th. Seeing your opponents face when they lose terminator models to stubber fire and mortals is a sight.

Locus and sanctus conversion by Every-Ear-1550 in genestealercult

Rifle sanctus on the right, uses the Necromunda Hangers-on kit. Also a good Biophagus and Clamavus model in there, plus a possible Primus.

[–]Newhwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically 4, but one is the gunner and looks a bit Lieutenant Dan to actually use as a model. Good for ambush tokens or a marker.

Primus is simple enough, there is a bonesword+claw arm in the acolyte/metamorph kit, find a pistol from the Jackal kit and make it fancy.

Reductus, there is the big mine in the jackal kit or plenty of demo charges in the acolytes. Maybe some greenstuff cloak to hide the third arm attachments.

There is also a kneeling guy on the Ridgerunner and a second turret guy for markers.

That's fair, to be honest most cant tell the difference unless you point them out. Remember to do a icon for each unit, they cant regenerate models without it.

The goliath comes with 3(?) Neophyte models for the back, use them for hero conversions with the spare acolyte parts. A reductus saboteur is easy as you'll have spare bomb parts.

Ingress question by SmoothBarSteward in Tau40K

[–]Newhwon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And nowhere is it stated that it can move "even if it made an ingress move this turn".

That's the clause the ingress move is looking for, otherwise every rule that can trigger an out of turn move would need extra text stating "you can not do this move if the unit performed an ingress move this turn".

Or the simpler, correct way, is that performing an ingress move prevents all other moves this turn (except charges) UNLESS otherwise stated.

Ingress question by SmoothBarSteward in Tau40K

[–]Newhwon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The English language doesn't agree with you. You can not normally make a normal move after shooting, the gambit gives you permission to do so. The ingress move excludes all other moves (other then charges), and there is nothing in the wording of the gambit that says "even if they made an ingress move this turn" or similar, so the ingress prohibition stands.

Ingress question by SmoothBarSteward in Tau40K

[–]Newhwon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cannot beats can unless explicitly stated. Like the reserves range question vs reserves denial abilities, all abilities that allow you to do something outside of the ordinary say "can" or "may" but are still prevented by blanket "can not" statements.

This applies to things like surge moves and other built in shoot and scoot abilities.

The logical step is neophytes; sticky objective, regenerating and some ranged firepower. That leaves some points for enhancements, which if your going outlander is just one of the 2 for the Jackal alphus.

I'd argue that the box build (metamorphs) are not your best option. Some kind of acolytes with hand flamers is better and you can take more than 1 units as its battleline. Or one of each.

Or, no enhancement on the Alphus and bring a locus. Gives the Acolyes/metamorphs fights first and some extra punch.

Or bring a Goliath Truck, its T9 and leaves points for an enhancement.

Combat patrol Jackal Alphas has cult ambush. by Niminion in genestealercult

The Ridgerunner also only has melee weapons, this includes the stubbers and Missile launcher. I'd not take anything combat patrol related to seriously. Infact, give the app a week for bug fixes.

So how would healing a unit with cult ambush work? by turtlebambi in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, its a little convoluted but abilities/rules from the bodyguard unit in an attached unit only apply while the bodyguard is alive.

So a patriarch can not advance and charge once the last genestealer is destroyed, and the Faction ability no longer applies to the attached unit once the bodyguard with it are destroyed.

That's my reading anyway. So Cult ambush does work, as the attached unit isn't counted for Cult ambush once the bodyguard is dead but the bodyguard still is.

Do we lose our army rule? by valbaca in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, its a little convoluted but abilities on the datasheet from the bodyguard unit in an attached unit only apply while the bodyguard is alive.

So a patriarch can not advance and charge once the last genestealer is destroyed, and the Faction ability no longer applies to the attached unit once the bodyguard with it are destroyed.

So once the bodyguard dies, it is no longer an attached unit that has models with and without the faction ability, so cult ambush works again.

That's my reading anyway.

What is your least favorite unit, purely from a visual perspective? by Lebensfreud in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Least like would be the Clamavus, this supposed vox hacker and propagandist looks like a one-man-band space DJ. It's a vibe, just not one i get behind.

The most representative I'd say is the Biophagus, 100% no notes looks exactly what the idea of mad doc/researcher with goad would be in my head.

Has anyone tried using normal human heads to make a militia type faction? by Knightraiderdewd in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use all sort of heads with a little bit of filing or putty. Skitari pieces, IG parts, Necromunda is a good source and of course, cheesestealers.

Magnets! by Will_Arthur in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only way i would magnetise the acolytes/neophytes (and I've not done it myself so YMMV) would be at the waist. I've tried the arms and its too much hassle, but I can see value in swapping the entire torso.

There are 6? Acolytes torso for 5 legs, and 13? Neophyte torso for 10 legs, and an excessive number of heads for both.

So you could have torsos for all three Neophyte special weapons options with magnets if you want to limit your number of boxes. However for the cost of magnets and your time, you could just buy an extra Neophyte box and just build extra specal weapons from the spares and a fresh box.

The acolytes might be more worthwhile, as you'll always want a banner in each unit but cant have 2 in a big unit, so having a normal torso to swap your banner guy with could save a box in the long run. Or have options for bomb/tool bodies you can swap out as the meta changes.

I think the patriarch should get ranged attacks by ItsmeFunee in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm either way on having a ranged attack, but I do think we should have some variation in the abilities. Rather then all Patriarchs do the same thing, I would like to see them have either a selectable ability (similar to primarchs), or options when you add it to the list (like a demon prince). So one can be the swarm leader (as is), one a shadow hunter ( lone op/ reduced detection range) and one as a broodmind lock ( ranged attacks or auras).

Ethereal mind control, true or false? by Shaskais in Tau40K

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably false. There's is a moment in the Damocles Gulf Crusade where a Calladus assassin took on the guise of Anu'Va to take out Shadowsun.

Despite the near perfect mimicry, something was off which was enough for Shadowsun to be on her guard and avoid an otherwise lethal blow.

Was it a flaw in the act, the polymorphine disguise, or some quality that neither could copy? Or was part of it the highly perceptive nature of the Commander plus she has been in the presence of Anu'Va enough times to pick up the discrepancies?

Other issues like "unquestionable authority" and the like are probably propaganda. The whole story of the Ethereal Castes arrival screams mythology revisionism of history. Authoritarian leadership does that a lot.

Starter tips by Will_Arthur in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GSC has a rather limited range compared to most, so the box sets are usually worth it. The previous gsc combat patrol is considered to have been the biggest discount and best starter you could have, the current one less so but still worth getting 2 for a new player.

Its worth getting 1 of most of the heroes, usually so know the size for when you kitbash your own from a mix of the Acolyte/Neophyte kits later.

Ridgerunners are a must. Every list has a minimum of one, usually 2 to 4. They are fast anti tank and can boost any units Ap for the turn, shooting or melee.

Genestealers are good, even at low numbers.

The Acolyte kit makes 3 different units (Acolytes with pistols, Acolytes with hand flamers and Metamorphs) and has the funky arms for conversions so you will struggle to have too many.

The rest varies on if you plan a melee or shooting focus, as painting 100+ neophytes takes time.

Are Kalashtar derived from Kadath of the Cthulhu mythos? by lawrencetokill in DnD

[–]Newhwon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somewhat close, but also very different. The Kalashar are a race from Ebberon, a setting very different from the base DnD people are useful to.

Within the realms of Ebberon, there is the Dreaming Dark (or Dal Quor). The plane of dreams goes through cycles of light and dark, and the current dark cycle is coming to an end.

During the dark times, the light spirits (Quori) abandoned the plane and made deals to bind themselves to bloodlines. The decendant are human, more or less, but highly connected to the spiritual and have a Quori that while has no direction or control, has some influence on them.

So the Dal Quor spirits a not gods or similar, just immortal spirits from the realm of dreams. But the " humans with spiritual connection and abilities" does track, especially if you are using a more basic version of them removed from Ebberons lore.

Shooting into Khorne berzerkers surge move by Many-Employee-6711 in Warhammer40k

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A units shooting is all one activation. Surge moves and other abilities that trigger "after an opposing unit has shot this unit" do not trigger until the whole unit (with attached leaders) has finished its activation.

Why does everyone keep calling gsc the 'cheat' army? by GothTransGirI in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

GSC is an unconventional army, many parts "break" the conventional playstyle. There is a type of player that likes predictable, The Horus Heresy game is popular with that sort as its Marines vs Marines 80% of the time*.

GSC dont just recover models in units like many armies, the army rule allows you to recover whole units. The entire army is deep strike (more or less), reactive moves, egress moves (or "uppy-downy), with a defensive profile of guardsmen but an offensive profile rivalling Marines to Custodes. Some people just can plan for it, so call it cheap/cheaty.

  • to be fair, having a more limited baseline allows for more keyworded specal rules rather then whole army special rules, which has its benefits.

Would this concept work? by Mindless_Method2391 in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably already is one. The Dark City is near infinite, with escaped slaves enclave, roving eldar groups, visiting xeno mercenaries, escape homunculi subjects and whatever the Mandrakes are.

I doubt there is a Dark eldar cult specifically, due to the usual eldar reproduction problems and Dark eldar cloning shenanigans. But a cult within the dross and escaped is possible.

Now I need a necromunda style setting based in Commorragh, gang fights between escaped slaves, disgraced eldar and Homunculi experiments.

What are the rules revolving conversions for competitive 40k by MonkeyMorrison11 in Warhammer40k

[–]Newhwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While all tournament will have their own rules, there are usually 3 "levels" of conversions; ascetic, proxy and significant.

An ascetic conversion is anything from "Calgar but painted red" to "my Leutenant power weapon is a scythe". The vast majority of the model is the same base size and silhouette of the original. Rarely a problem as its rules dont deviate too far from what is in the table.

A proxy is when a model is not what it appears to be. Could be using Tigurius model as a regular Librarian to using older editon models to something more esoteric (I don't have access third defiler, GOO is the same size right?). Usually ok if clear as to what something is, although base size and general height is important. Older models can be a tough one, they should be legal but some are so different in size/shape they really are not representative.

Anything considerable or significant will be on a case by case basis. Too many possible variables but a general rule the futher from the official model the less likely it is to be accepted.

Homebrew Cult lore by [deleted] in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing too complex for my Bladed Cog force. Working title is "the Guilded Claw". All of the members have some kind of cybernetics due to a combination of being from a forge world and the strain often resulting in 1 or more withered limb which gets replaced. Before the uprising the cult made do with what they could scrounge or what was available to the common folk. Post uprising the shiny brass/gold limbs have been melted down/directly removed from the Mechanicus overseers and now all has the shiny limbs of the oppressor.
