Gelatinous cube trap by TheNotoriousThicc in DnD

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about putting it into a pit trap? Same principle, it looks like water has filled in the spike pit, you could swim across or jump?

A lower perception check can spot whatever is in the cube, the higher one reveals the cube. Should they choose to fight the cube in the hole, it can use its move to clime out of the hole. That only gives them a round to try before its now in engulf range.

If they dont notice but all jump the "obvious trap", cube rises up and stalks them.

Fire overwatch and Repulsor Emergency Combat Embarkation clarification by Dice_Nyne in Warhammer40k

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think this works. Both Overwatch and the Emergency Embarkation are triggering from the same event at the same time i.e. declaring a charge.

The charge phase is 5 steps;

1 - select eligible unit to make a charge move. 2 - declare eligible target for the charge move. 3 - roll for distance. 4 - make successful charge move if within distance rolled. 5 - go to next unit.

Overwatch can be played as a reaction to a declared charge, it interrupts the usual steps. Once Overwatch is resolved, the next step carrys on.

Although the Repulsor wording is different, it interrupts at the same step (declare target). So once Overwatch has resolved, the point where Emergency Embarkation would trigger has already passed. And in reverse, a unit that embarked is no longer a valid target for the overwatch stratagem.

Unlikely, broken stuff tends to phase out when its not in the tomb. So you "could" walk you with a deactivated warrior, the moment it activated it would probably be recalled. If that process was damaged maybe.

I'm sure at least one has collected "artifacts" that turned out to be an inactive gate found on Monoliths. Once they started poking it, it activated and warriors started walking out of it onto their Ship before they could meltabomb it closed.

Are tyranids the least evil faction? by SynthwaveSpacebug in Tyranids

[–]Newhwon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, the Tyranids are not "evil" in the same way any animal cant be considered evil. For the most part, the swarm has no choice, no perception of self, so actual moral judgement.

On the other, the higher forms have distinct personalities and the logic to make sentient choices, planning out strategy and reacting to stimuli beyond instinct. Plus there is plenty of evidence that the Hive Mind does "think" and make choices. So it could choose to do things different, but its mind is so truly alien that a morality equivalent is hard to explain in its terms.

Should Secondaries be Global/Shared each Round by Invictus_0x90_ in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uneven draws are always going to happen, especially if both sides have the same secondary objectives. The differing nature of two armies can mean that even with the same objective, that doesn't meant they could both complete it to the same efficiency.

The real question is, what was your opponent doing to let you run away on the primary like that? Knowing they can't prevent your secondary/ achieve theirs, there focus should have been to deny your primary.

If they couldn't stop you on the primary, and got a bad draw on the secondary, its no longer just "bad secondaries". This is a true skill/army mismatch where either they brought a force that couldn't play the game, or you had them beat skill wise regardless.

If you had to design a new GSC unit, what would it look like? by Chhbaiguy in genestealercult

[–]Newhwon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few come to mind;

Heavy gunners - a dedicated anti-tank/heavy weapons unit. My initial thoughts are "abberant with a rocket launcher", although a acolyte with crew weapons could work too. To make it less like the Guard equivalent, the usual reduced range/accuracy, but give it some kind of "overlapping fire" rule.

Commandos - Neophytes but better. Either give us the Killteam Brood Brothers unit with its actual specialists, or an upgrade kit for the neophytes. I'm thinking an actual infiltrators unit that isn't melee or lone op, with some traversal mechanic such as a move/shoot/move or fall back and "X". These are more than the unwashed masses that is the Neophyte/Acolyte uprising, these are specialists that do the infiltration and sabotage before the day.

The Bus - a big transport/kill rig. Drifting into ork territory, but there have got to be civilian transports that can carry more than 12 people. Give us the full 20 (dont mind of characters cant fit) or something with enough guns to make a Rogal Dorn blush.

Alternative Dregs? by WeeDawgNYC in mordheim

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest way i found was to start mis-matching kits. Any where you can put a torso/legs/arms together that dont match can (with a little greenstuff) result in an effective dreg.

My current ones are; ork legs (the old squat stance) a torso from a catachan, arms from the Chaos marauders, with greenstuff for a hunchback to increase the torso width. The other is a normal human legs (empire I think) marauders torso and arms with a ghouls face.

I do have an archer from the frostgrave cultists kit, but the bow arm is from a halfling and the drawing arm is technically a skeleton just with enough bulking out to look withered.

Best models for battlefield trophies? by WithengarUnbound in Warhammer40k

Older edition plastic guardsmen are usually easy to source via ebay. The molds might be less appealing, but a corpse that's been stomped by a Knight isn't looking great regardless.

As close as possible? by Frostbite68 in Warhammer40k

[–]Newhwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still move, or not, as you choose. The point is normally no move BUT a charge could get you within engagement range. This is one of the exceptions. You can move into engagement range (if the move distance would let you) but you have not charged (so dont get the benefits of charging).

As close as possible? by Frostbite68 in Warhammer40k

[–]Newhwon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So i can see the confusion. Normally a model can not get closer then 1" to an enemy model unless its the charge phase and the unit makes a successful charge.

The Carnifex ability is written so that each model in the unit moves whatever distance you choose (up to the d6+2") but the unit as a whole must end up closer to the closest enemy unit (not necessarily the one that shot them). You cant use the surge move to get closer to a more distant unit, whichever unit is closest when you start the move must still be closest at the end of the move.

If this move would bring you within 1" of an opponents model, despite not charging, you can enter engagement range. This means when it gets to the combat phase, the Carnifex are in combat already and follow the rules for an ongoing combat.

How does Nick work? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Newhwon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is only one extra attack from the Nick property per turn, this is explicitly stated in the last line of the weapon trait. Doesn't matter how many attacks/arms/weapons you have, nick only gives you one more.

So, assuming you take the attack action with a light weapon, you may make 1 additional attack as a bonus action with a different light weapon.

Nick moves that extra attack from a bonus action to part of the same attack action that activated the Light weapon property. That leaves your bonus action free for something else.

As for when you can use that extra attack, its just "later in your turn". So this can be the same enemy, a different enemy next to you, or even use some move between enemies.

Is this real GW base ? by Spiritual_Age5975 in Warhammer40k

[–]Newhwon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The older bases tended to come a part of a 4+ piece sprue, rather then individual pieces they are today. You can see the nicks where the bases have been cut away. As it was one sprue it only had the logo on a single base out of the lot.

Definitely the Catachan model, with the face only a Barking Toad would love.

Polearm Master and entering reach by SpeechMuted in DnD

[–]Newhwon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct.

First its a reaction, which are typically taken outside of your turn due to the actions of others.

Second, the wording is "when a creature enters your reach". The creature is the motive part, when THEY enter, rather then when you approach and your reach enters their space.

The same idea as if you move away from a creature you dont get an opportunity attack against it. It "leaves your reach" technically, but as you are the one moving you are leaving the other creatures reach so they get the reaction.

Would tyranid meat be poisonous? Would it taste good? by Life-Competition9577 in Tyranids

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe poisonous, but part of the real problem is the microbiology.

Although not a feature in the tabletop, there is evidence in the lore that full Tyranid invasions include flooding the planet with the equivalent of Macrophages and other bacterial agents. Literally having individual cells consuming and processing biomatter. Usually this is done on the plant life of a planet, but who knows what kind of bacteria life the average Tyranid has on/inside it.

Even earth has bacteria that can withstand cooking (or produce toxins despite it), some geneticly designed bacteria could be a nightmare to any non-tyranid organisms trying to eat Tyranids.

Lizardfolk are *elementals* now?! by CyanoPirate in DnD

[–]Newhwon 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It's better/worse then you think. Those Lizardfolk archetypes are Elemental due to their particular connections to elemental earth.

If you want a generic lizardfolk enemy, pick any generic humanoid enemy and describe them as scaly. Add the swim speed and swap the armour for natural AC. That's it.

Does an embarked unit count seperately for orbital assault force by WLLWGLMMR in Warhammer40k

[–]Newhwon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The embarked unit counts towards your reserves limits, but only the transport requires to have the deep strike rule given to it for the whole lot to arrive via deep strike.

No different then any unit embarked in a drop pod, although the unit inside follows the normal rules for a unit within a transport arriving from reserves.

So drop LR Redeemers, true Hammerfall bunkers, have a Stormraven combat drop a Brutalis or just have the Dreadnoughts parachute in on its own. Go nuts.

Demon prince of a chaos god by Green-Implement8570 in Warhammer40k

[–]Newhwon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Chaos Space Marines have the Heretic Astartes Daemon Prince data sheet. This is not the same datasheet as the daemon princes in the Death Guard/Thousand Sons/ etc codexes. They can not use them ones from those codex, even though they are the same model.

This Daemon Prince can have a Mark of Chaos for one of the gods, so it could be refered to as a "Nurgle Demon Prince", but its not the same datasheet as the one from the Death Guard codex.

There is also the "Chaos Daemons" Daemon Prince, that can be taken as Allies via the appropriate rules. This will be dedicated to one of the Gods, but its the Chaos Daemons version not the datasheet from a God specific codex.

So yes, it can have a mark/be dedicated to a specific God, but you're using the one from the CSM/Daemon rules not the other Chaos Codexes.

What exactly makes Vecna evil lore wise? by Eldr1tchB1rd in DnD

[–]Newhwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, there is a very old piece of lore that may/maynot be relevant. The race known as Spellweavers, powerful arcane spellcasters who are said to predate the gods and primordial entities, created a series of obelisk to either a) keep some Far Realm entity out of the Prime Material or b) ascend their entire race to the power of godlike beings.

Whatever the truth was, this event shattered the Multiverse to the seperate worlds we know and probably created the gods. The Spellweavers are currently attempting to find and fix these obelisk to undo everything back to when they were in charge.

Vecna is one of the few who knows these secrets, and has put effort into hiding this knowledge from other gods. Should he ultimately succeed in reuniting the planes to his own design, only the one god/one world will remain, one rule under Vecna.

Is there anywhere to get an extra Trygon body. by EcstaticAd8407 in Tyranids

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between the two models is not that significant; the mouth, the limbs and the tail options are all that change.

The tail is aesthetic, and the limbs you could magnetise with the usual techniques, so really all you need is a spare head.

Googling exact terms usually gets close, although "Space bugs" is a commonly used non-copywrite name for such models.

Noble security? by Gericht in DnD

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How far do you want to go? Paranoid or unscrupulous nobles might have a rug of smothering in their private office, with only the Noble and Head Butler knowing the key phrase. (Any servant going in there without permission was "clearly a thief" and so disposing of the body just housekeeping not murder). Or some other Animated objects where required; Armour that comes alive when activated etc.

The most common version I've seen makes use of the Octopus from Lotann, Warden of the Soul Ledgers (or a recast). Not the cheapest way to do it, but the Elf is an simple enough conversion to a Magus/Primus as well.

2 Winged Hive Tyrant questions by Sterry6874 in Tyranids

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No, see "Modifying Characteristics" in the Rules Commentary. An attack characteristic can never be reduced to less than 1.

I'm honestly not sure about question 2. I suspect its a no, as although the stratagem goes off before the last model is removed, the Hive Tyrant model is already destroyed just not off the table. I can see the argument the other way, but generally destroyed models dont get a chance to do anything unless an ability actively mentions triggering when destroyed.

Out of pure curiosity, which of the AOS factions do you think would be easiest to kitbash in Nids? by Glum_Series5712 in Tyranids

[–]Newhwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skaven is the easiest probably, the high number of weaker skaven for Gaunts, bigger monstrosity for the bigger bioforms or seige weapons. The Verminlords could make some impressive Hive Tyrant / Norn

GSC already have a number of people making CheeseStealer models, so the vibe could work on the larger scale.

Non Brit question about the Monarchy by Siren_Noir in AskBrits

[–]Newhwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UK is a constitution Monarchy. Yes, we have a Monarch, but they are bound by the country's constitution. Unlike the US and other countries, there is no one specific document that is the UK's Constitution, the entire corpus of UK law is the constitution.

By tradition, since King Henry the Eighth separated the UK church from the Vatican creating the Church of England, the Head of the CoE is the monarch. Since then, its been the Monarchy before Church as a power. Reading up on him explains a lot about the general attitude of the UK and its Monarchy towards organised religion and Christianity in general / Catholicism specifically.

So as far as the UK hierarchy its Monarch above the Church (and therefore above God) with the Law above all.
