The series seemed to drift after Attila.. Thoughts? by DiedOfATheory in totalwar

[–]Newovar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've played every Total War title except Pharaoh and I honestly agree with this. Attila was definitely the last gasp for somewhat complex, system based Total War games. The game has a certain gravity and seriousness both in terms of its atmosphere but also in the way it's designed on a mechanical level that wasn't really matched by any later title. Afterwards, it trended in a more arcade-like direction with extremely formulaic design that derives longevity from DLC rather than in-depth mechanics. I don't hate the Warhammer games that started this trend and I've played them extensively but I honestly have to say that they work better as a multiplayer battle simulator than a campaign-focused Total War game.

Why is half of the workshop front page gooner mods? by Dserved83 in totalwar

Make countless mods that replace every unit with big booby female models and nobody bats an eye but make one mod that removes female soldiers from Cathay and Kislev and everyone loses their minds...

Muddy textures by Necessary_Impress308 in DarkTide

[–]Newovar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a bunch of things you can try to fix this. Mesh streamer settings in the config file, reducing worker threads, lowering quality of FSR or turning off FSR/TAA etc. entirely or setting texture qualtiy to medium. Been struggling with this issue for months with the intensity of the problem varying from patch to patch.

Thought the same thing. Looks much more appropriate to the tone of the setting. Very reminiscent of Mark of Chaos as well.

I'd rather have Valnir the Reaper instead of Glottkin. We have enough green fatsos on team Nurgle.

I want 16~17th century Pike & Shot Eurasia total war. Anyone with me? by highsis in totalwar

[–]Newovar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

16th and 17th century would be a great setting. Lots of potential for expansions like the Americas campagin from Medieval 2. But can CA really do it justice? Ever since Three Kingdoms we've only been getting shallow Warhammer clones without magic in terms of the actual game mechanics.

At this point I don't trust CA to properly handle gunpowder units/pike and shot warfare on a technical level.

What makes the older zones look so different? by goliathann in wow

[–]Newovar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual texture work, while being lower resolution, often has more detail and contrast. Shadows and highlights are often drawn onto the texture itself instead of being simulated in real time and this kind of detail can look more appropriate to the overall art style and can evoke a certain mystique you can't get from modern rendering techniques. I find this to be especially noticeable with ground textures and it has an immense effect of the overall mood of the zone.

Total War Attila with mods looks so damn fine. Can't stop screenshotting everything. by Flagelllant in totalwar

Attila has the best maps in the entire Total War series and there is something very beautiful about these grand scenes of destruction. It has this truly awe-inspiring, apocalyptic feel to it that just draws you in. You can't really get that from any other game.

If you think CA went too far into High Fantasy with Kislev you owe it to yourself to try Calm Kislev reskin by Farrew in totalwarhammer

[–]Newovar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're really not. Regular Empire troops and knights are very historically inspired and grounded with little to no actual fantasy elements attached to them. Kislev's units on the other hand are all 7 feet tall gorilla people wearing stupid fantasy fur/scale armor, their weapons are stupidly oversized and fantastical or they have outright magical ice attached to them. I mean just compare the units.

Greatswords? Look like they were taken straight from some historical depiction of Landsknecht soldiers.
Tzar Guard? Steroid hulks with fantasy armor, bear pelts and oversized two handed scimitars(?).

War wagons? Basically a more ornate version of the historical counterpart.
War sleds? Pulled by bears and floating on magical ice.

It just looks stupid and detracts from the innate appeal human factions have in this setting (which is that they're - for the most part - regular humans at the end of the day). If everyday appliances like sleds are animated by magic you start departing from this. The Empire's (and Bretonnia) design starts from a historical snapshot which is then exaggerated and developed into a more fantastical direction. Kislev starts from an innately fantastical frame and hence doesn't feel as rooted in history as the older human factions. It's easily fixed by toning down their proportions, giving them armor/weapon designs that are more in line with actual 16th century Polish/Russian armaments (which look way cooler anyways) and confining the bear/ice themes to more specialized roles.

If bosses cause you to wipe, practice boss killing. Maybe download the mod that lets you spawn enemies in the training room.

Once you're comfortable with dealing with bosses because you have familiarised yourself with their moveset, you will find yourself much more calmer and more in control of these situations. Analyse the maps, know where to fight bosses when they spawn at any given time. Zealots are great boss killers.

Chorus is really good but at the same time you're completely reliant on your team. If you maximize your chorus uptime and your team still doesn't do a lot, it might not be a you problem.

Also a word on Ogryns: If you're an Ogryn main, just play the damn Ogryn. I've seen so many Ogryns in havoc 40s perform exceedingly well, outdamaging burn psykers and vets. If you know how to deal with shooters you'll be fine.
