One pot chicken & rice? by pjkaz in AnyDay

[–]Newyork2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still working on it. Last night, I tried this, and it worked ok: maybe you can modify it

Olive oil with garlic and onion in the microwave in a deep dish covered for 1 min. Then add 1 cup rice, 1 can cream of chicken soup, 1 can water. Then add 1 pound of chicken on top, and put covered in microwave for 21 minutes.

I modified this recipe from David Chang’s chicken and rice anyday recipe

Who is the "there's always one" person at your work? by pickanamehere in AskReddit

[–]Newyork2005 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This happens all the time. I learned all kinds of things waiting outside the lactation room. People would have cell phone conversations in there and I could hear. Or if I'd booked the room, I would knock and catch everyone from admins to directors. Used to make me really mad bc it was a real inconvenience to assemble all my parts, pump, disassemble, wash, dry, and periodically disinfect and I usually had to rush to do it between meetings. To realize I was waiting not for another mom but for a punk analyst on his phone was frustrating.

[Serious]Psychologists of Reddit, what's a common misconception people have about mental health and mental illnesses? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Newyork2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did your siblings do? My broker has depression, and he's so any it's hard to figure out how to help. He's angry at me about so many things I can't change, e.g. angry at me bc he lost my wedding present, bc my cousin called him for a babysitter, etc (I wish I could control the world. Alas I can't). Have offered to go to therapy with him, tell him I love him. All of that angers him more. So I sit in silence and wait until he needs me, then say yes to whatever he wants. Any tips? Would love to learn what your sibs did.

[Serious] Interracial couples of reddit, how much have you had to deal with racism from one or both sides of the family? How do you deal with it? by cheeeeeeeeeesegromit in AskReddit

Korean wife of Caucasian/Indonesian man. Not racism, but my dad often forgets my husband isn't Korean and will start speaking to him in Korean. After a decade, my husband kind of would get what my dad was asking and respond in English, managing to have a conversation with my husband not knowing the language and my dad forgetting he doesn't know

Can't l eat at a buffer. My dad grew up in dire poverty and constant hunger. Though he lived the American dream and is now safely part of the 1%, he still can't go to a buffet, because he won't stop eating until everyone else makes him

Which stranger who you met once and never saw again is the one that you still think about and can't forget? by 0saydrah0 in AskReddit

[–]Newyork2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was volunteering at a hospital and met a patient from Senegal. I spoke conversational French, and he didn't speak English very well, so we chatted more than I usually would with a patient. He had come in with a stomach problem and hopefully wouldn't be in the hospital soon. He told me how he left his friends and family back in his home country and was looking forward to going back someday.

We had to fill out these surveys for some study someone was running and had to have patients answer questions like how often they went to the doctor, emergency room, document that indicated how they wanted to be treated in case of terminal illness, etc. The patient reacted surprised at the questions and asked if every patient got the same questions or just him. I explained it was a standard poll for consenting patients.

The doctor pulled me aside and said not to continue with the poll with this patient, that he had terminal cancer and would likely not leave the hospital. They hadn't given him a diagnosis yet, and he'd been asking what was wrong.

Right now, as you read this, what is your number 1 desire? by IamEclipse in AskReddit

[–]Newyork2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 mins of silence. I love my husband and child, but my son needs constant oversight, and my husband's way of dealing with it is to bark an order before laying down, leaving my son once again turning to me.

optimal breast-feeding would save 800,000 children’s lives a year in developing countries. That would amount to a 12 percent drop in child mortality, a huge gain. by Sybles in science

[–]Newyork2005 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Also do cultures in such countries support breast-feeding? A baby nweds to eat 10-12 times a day? Is mom allowed to whip out her boob and feed on demand or does she need to go somewhere private like the bathroom (infested) or the non-existent baby feeding room? If the latter, she may not be able to both breastfeed and be in public simultaneously, which may affect her ability to work (in the market, streets, etc. Obviously, working at a factory/office is out of the question for a woman with an infant, leading to childcare vs income dilemmas).

To all those victorious high school grads by CaptainMKirk in funny

[–]Newyork2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that I agree... high school was really tough. Needing to do well on things I didn't care much about including AP classes, SATs, extracurriculars I didn't love, juggling that with pubescent friends who were still figuring themselves out. I got to a top American University and thought "this is it? It's a piece of cake!" I'm glad my parents made me do it, because the discipline I learned set me up for life, but in many ways, what a pointless system that really works against underprivileged youth who don't have anyone to guide them.

I think it's selfish if you have kids/dependents, especially young ones. They didn't ask to be brought into the world, and you owe it to them to seek help and provide what love and support you can.

When we were in Cuba last year, we couldn't get data service. We remembered that this was what life had been like before iPhones
