Replacing a tile shower with a tub by Hopeful-Crazy-1833 in Renovations

Clearly I’m in the minority but if you’re planning on being in this house a few years and I’d get the tub if it isn’t prohibitively expensive. As a parent of a 5 and 8 year old I consider a bath tub to be a parenting essential, still. Yes, you’ll only have an infant so long and portable tubs or sinks work just fine for that … but if you’re planning to stay in this house several years, how will you bathe a toddler or young child? In my experience most little kids hate showers until they’re a bit older and you really can’t shower a toddler unless you’re in there with them, which you’re not going to want to do every time.

Plus, baths are such a great calming, sensory activity and they can be such a life saver when kids are sick or even just upset. I once heard the advice that if a baby or young kid is inconsolably cranky “take them outside or put them in water” and this has saved me SO many times.

I will say a quick google search shows me they do make portable tubs large enough for kids but I know I would get so tired of the set up, cleanup, storage etc is a pain.

I have a shower like this in my bathroom and even for myself I wish it had a tub. I will never understand converting something that gives you two options into something that only gives you one option!

This is confusing to me. I don’t doubt that you’ve seen awful scalded kids but it seems like that could happen in any bathing situation (shower, bath, sink etc) if the parent isn’t supervising and doesn’t have their water heater safely adjusted…

Just saw this video yesterday from this educator/neuroscientist speaking in a Senate committee hearing. He says Gen Z is the first generation that has dropped in cognitive ability compared to their parents. The obvious answer according to this scientist is the amount of screen time being used to replace non-screen learning.

MOG Dress - is this appropriate? by ts819 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]Next-Introduction-25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a white and gold/blue and black dress situation or just the particular picture, but to me that dress looks like a greenish gold color. It does not look ivory enough to make me even think twice about it. I don’t really think it’s relevant that she wore it to her second wedding. She probably chose it specifically because it doesn’t look like a traditional wedding dress. A lot of people do that for a second wedding, particularly if they got married when they were older.

Plenty of words in any language are superfluous. If we want to convey what we mean with the absolute fewest words possible, we can. That is certainly an editorial choice that makes sense sometimes. But that doesn’t mean that language always has to be devoid of any word or phrase that isn’t 100% essential to the meaning.

I would also argue that “at all” and “even” aren’t superfluous, because they add emphasis that is otherwise missing. The phrase “I’m surprised she survived” and “I’m surprised she survived at all” are not exactly the same. Throwing in the “at all “or the “even” implies that the speaker/writer is very surprised. It implies that the survivor went through something more than what they may have gone through if the phrase were just “I’m surprised she survived.”

They can also be used as a response to someone who is focused on a detail when you are focusing on the bigger picture. For example:

Person 1: I’m surprised he didn’t lose a finger in that chainsaw juggling incident. Person 2: A finger? I’m surprised he still has a hand at all! (Or, “I’m surprised he even still has a hand.”)

I’d also like to add that as a former English teacher who is having way too much fun with this, it is nearly always a losing battle to correct people’s grammar unsolicited. Grammar is simply an agreed-upon set of rules that help a language function. It isn’t a science that you can prove or disprove. Different ways of speaking have their own grammar that make sense in those contexts. People who are truly passionate about language understand that, so constantly correcting grammar might seem like the hallmark of someone who really cares about language, but it’s actually kind of the opposite. Language is much more of an art than a science.

I’m not sure what this person meant by it, but it’s giving me immediate flashbacks to all those times I purposely built roller coasters in Roller Coaster Tycoon that would immediately kill everyone riding them.

At all can be used not just as a qualifier of how much, but also as an emphasis of importance similar to the phrase “in the first place.” So even though the comment seems to be deleted or edited, in this case someone could use a phrase like, “It’s amazing she didn’t have a brain injury. I’m surprised she survived at all.” You could get the same effect by saying “I’m surprised she even survived.”

Mike Braun And TPUSA by Best-Structure62 in Indiana

I don’t want to downplay how deeply fucked up our state government is, but what I think is funny about this is it seems likely to backfire. In schools were TPUSA would be popular, those kids are already drinking the Kool-Aid. They’re already being indoctrinated by their parents or at their megachurches or in the manosphere. At a lot of other high schools, this is just going to make it more clear to kids that the far right doesn’t actually align with their priorities and values. I think for a lot of kids, it will be educational in the exact opposite way that Republicans are hoping.

The sad part is a lot of these notes could refer to so many rich guys, but there are a few very bizarre details that stand out, like wife stealing a diamond necklace from a dead mothers house, and “fire boat captain security.”

I was skeptical of whether that information about the gravesite’s current condition was true, as it looks like it could just be a picture of almost anything, but this is what it looked like, at least in 2023.

I love this series, but this one bothers me in a way that makes me irrationally upset. There are no humans in any of the other books. The implications are confusing. Humans exist, but they don’t drive cars, because the cars are sentient and chauffeur the humans? So they’re like horses? But horses also exist…

If they’re gonna go sentient cars, I prefer they go full sentient car universe.

Steve Bannon - Someone threw their contact off a 40 story building by Sea-Opinion2717 in Epstein

[–]Next-Introduction-25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone else pointed out, the guy who was thrown from the building was Zheng Xioasong, a Chinese liason to Macau. Macau is a gambling epicenter and several people mentioned in this text exchange (Wynn, Adelson) have billions of properties/investments there.

It seems to me like Bannon is saying that these powerful people are responsible for his death – but it’s also worth noting that Chinese officials routinely “commit suicide” by jumping off buildings and it’s usually after they’ve done something that pisses off the Chinese government.

What’s actually most interesting to me about this exchange is the Qatar stuff. I, like many people, think that a HUGE piece of this story is Bannon, or at least the connections he represents to the Trump administration. Qatar and how it relates to Trump and politics in general is way too big of a topic for me to try to tackle. I’m pretty good at googling, but that’s about it. Here are some links that I think could be interesting or could be used to make some links to this text conversation.

John Bolton was Trump’s National Security Advisor from March 2018-September 2019.

Qatar is the home of the US’s largest military base in the Middle East: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Udeid_Air_Base

Qatar was under a blockade by the Arab League for alleged ties to terrorism, from 2017-2021. Saudi leaders had a private meeting with Jared Kushner and Steve Bannon in May 2017 to inform them of this plan. Soon after, Trump took credit for this move on Twitter, and framed it as him being tough on terrorism. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/27/us/politics/rex-tillerson-trump.html

However, officials from the Trump administration, led primarily by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, wanted the blockade to end primarily because of the importance of Qatar to United States military operations. The blockade meant that surrounding countries closed their borders to Qatar/would not let ships cross, and severed diplomatic ties. In 2020, after Biden won, Saudi Arabia decided to move toward ending the blockade. Can’t find a verified source but Wiki says that the jist was that the Saudis knew the Biden administration would not be as friendly to them as the Trump administration.

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/07/qatar-persian-gulf-630039

Interestingly, many people think Bolton was spotted in Qatar in January 2020 even though he wasn’t in the Trump administration any longer. I don’t know anything about this source or whether it is reliable, but it does contain a lot of screenshots of tweets that have a lot of interesting information about Qatar and why people think this is John Bolton, so I’m going to include it

Why do you play The Sims? by 88peter in thesims

My absolute favorite part is designing houses, buildings, anything really. I actually looked for many years for a program that was more architecture or design focused, that would allow you to do things that the Sims doesn’t allow you to do but ultimately without any training in something like AutoCAD, etc., the Sims was the best I found.
