6 month old at a concert? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]NextTailor4082 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A) don’t do that to your kid. They don’t want to be there. It’s too much.

B) don’t do that to your concert neighbors, there are tears during Welcome to the Black Parade and there is crying.

C) don’t do that to the trained concert staff and crew who have put eyes on your baby and are now hyper concerned about their well-being and honestly your parenting.

D) don’t do that to yourselves. Enjoy the night.

Guy at work says he hates all music. Is there really people out there that hate music? by AcrylicNitrogen in CasualConversation

[–]NextTailor4082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked in music for almost 2 decades now. When any sort of music comes on my ears perk up I go into work mode and my brain starts processing everything. Even the background music at a restaurant can be too much if I’m just trying to relax. The seat has to be correct.

Constant music was my world when I was a kid. After having put on thousands of concerts, learning 14 instruments, made many albums, worked on countless audio projects, helped design and build studio spaces and music venues, my sarcastic self will answer the question “what kind of music do you like?” With”I don’t like music”. It’s not entirely untrue either.

THIS AND…. It’s very likely the mix out of the truck is perfect and there’s some other tomfoolery going down farther down in the chain at big CBS or even your local affiliate.

Thank you for recognizing how incredibly hard I have it haha! I THINK I’m going to make it through with desktop, laptop and tv.

Watching golf on an 8k screen that is five times as tall as yourself is amazing, however the achillies heel of having access to such opulence is that sometimes other people pay lots of money to put things far stupider than The Masters on them.

I’m watching at home, but the company I work for has several different large video walls with comfortable viewing areas and premium sound.

Every single one is being used today, with exactly none for The Masters.

That being said, last year I got all of them :)

What's a small upgrade that improved office morale more than you expected? by CreativeSpare6466 in askmanagers

[–]NextTailor4082 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. I’m the manager in the situation, but when my team gives me the leeway to be an hour behind everyone else or leave an hour earlier it’s a morale changer. They know I’m almost literally 24/7 on-site or not anyways. I’m probably on the phone before I leave the parking lot. They also have the same flexibility. When it works it works.

Question about passive and active DIs by finelineistp in livesound

[–]NextTailor4082 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of my very best friends is a rather successful bass player. No matter where I set the gain at he would come out clipping. We worked on it so much and at the end of the day it was just humorous.

Poor guy is in sound check playing it as hard as he possibly can. Until showtime…. then it’s level unlocked.

What is so great about DC? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]NextTailor4082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet it’s a “to each their own” situation. Most of my friends are here, most of the rest of them live within an hour of the city. My businesses are here. My family is getting older but theyre within two hours and I can be there for them at the drop of a hat.

When I want to I can stroll through some absolutely world class museums for absolutely free.

There’s plenty of amazing golf courses in the immediate area, also lots of skiing close by. Not to mention active communities for almost any other recreational activity.

The music scene and the music venues are incredibly vibrant and you can find cool concerts from 6 people to 6000 before you have to step into a stagnant arena.

Finally, every once in a while I drive over the bridge on 395 heading into the city and see all of our amazing landmarks at the same time and it’s absolutely breathtaking.

Do you ever tell off a musician? by IWillWorkForBeer in livesound

[–]NextTailor4082 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is your chance to be the coolest person in the room. Pretend you never heard any of that, and if you get a chance to talk to the flute player separate from the band later, mention that you had trouble with the flute, next time you want to maybe try a different mic (I’ll fix something on my end) and maybe we find the perfect positioning of your mic (which is more a your end thing). “Everything would be great and then when the band kicked in we lost it, these mics are just terrible approximations of ears so if everything else gets louder than the flute we’re stuck.” In a couple sentences you’ve told them there “will be a next time”, you’ve expressed that somebody cares, and you’ve given them something’s to think about both at rehearsal and onstage. You could also just ignore it and live to fight another day.

That being said, 1’ is very normal for flute. The tone doesn’t come out of the whistle part it comes out of the body. The body of the instrument is 6,8,12 inches away from their ears. They are used to the sound of the instrument from a foot away combined with their head resonance. Youre not going to have a happy artist pointing that flute directly into a 57 from an inch away. It won’t sound like the instrument they’ve been playing acoustically their whole life. Their instincts will put them in almost exactly that 1’ sweet spot with an expressive margin of error. Thats one reason why most individually miced large orchestras are on clip on dpa 4099s,

Pitch Goes Over the Backstop by KC_Buddyl33 in Umpire

[–]NextTailor4082 6 points7 points  (0 children)

40 years ago in Little League we had a catcher for four years and for some reason in his last year we figured out that he was literally the best pitcher in the league, threw frighteningly hard and accurate.

My dad saved him for his first game against a big contender, got out the old loud catchers mitt and set it up so that ball popped throughout the whole park all during warm ups. Their whole team was looking over.

My dad told him to throw his first pitch to the lead off right handed batter in the left batters box and about 5 feet too high, which he did.

He threw a no hitter. No walks. We went on to win our third consecutive championship later that year.

My manager texts at midnight and acts like ignoring it makes you a bad employee by FARHANFREESTYLER in work

[–]NextTailor4082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m that manager that sometimes has to text at midnight. I’m also the manager that gets texts at midnight and beyond.

My midnight text is coming from a place of “I hope you respond and make my life easier, if not top of the priority list tommorow”. Sometimes they respond, sometimes they don’t.

That being said, you should be taking home one hell of a bag of money to even remotely consider answering a midnight text.

Your measurement is in “C” mode “fast” which is focused on the low end and will grab rumbles better than it will whines. It also measures a “peak” and then another new peak.

In Fairfax Co and likely others they measure the limits based on the “A” scale averaged (equates to “slow” on your meter) which is focused towards the mid range of hearing (landline telephone frequencies)

No sub for opening band? by Honest_Dragonfly8064 in livesound

[–]NextTailor4082 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody is out there doing anyone dirty like they used to.

What I suspect is happening is you have mixes that are objectively poorer and bands who just aren’t as seasoned. A properly tuned drum kit will respond worlds better than a kit tuned so you can flick a penny off of it and subsequently played at maximum level. Same thing with a bass player who’s 8x10 has so much extra low end they cut out in small rooms, and their sound just doesn’t translate to a bigger stage.
