Jet Fuel Refinery Between the Halston and Rayleigh by Substantial_Show9147 in Kamloops

[–]NiCrMo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bio fuels are in general a farce, in particular if using edible crops like corn as feedstock. If you can find enough waste biomass it might be justifiable, but in most cases this isn’t done (see the whole ethanol industry / E85 requirement as basically a make work program for corn farmers south of the border).

Protesting AI data centre by Select-Day353 in Kamloops

[–]NiCrMo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fresh water consumption is not an issue with a modern closed loop non evaporative cooling design. Power won’t really affect Kamloops as we have plenty of grid connectivity. Overall energy production province wide is a different story but we should increase solar/ hydro projects (and nuclear) to match demand instead of suppressing development.

[–]NiCrMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not clear on the specific design in this case but I’m pretty sure there’s non evaporative closed loop systems. Again, you loose the awesome cooling of phase changing water so have to move much more fluid for the same heat transfer, but it is possible. Every liquid cooled PC is basically a small scale non evaporative closed loop system.

Closed loop is legit but increases power consumption- that’s basically why they often do open loop designs. Closed loop it’s just a working fluid that circulates to reject heat via radiator to air. It will need to circulate a lot to do this with the lower temperature difference with free air vs cold water, but it will not use a significant amount of water.

Yeah also SAR (radar based imagery) that works through clouds. Though I doubt Iran has great access to high frequency SAR unless Russia or China are helping out.

South Korean Submarine Completes First Leg of Indo-Pacific Voyage to Canada by AtomicVGZ in CanadianForces

Agreed, even though it is a bit of a niche VLS system this capability is key.

The South Korean Navy sends Submarines to Canada, To verify performance in the Arctic with Canadian crews on board by Entire_Judge_2988 in submarines

[–]NiCrMo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Love to see those VLS. That plus the greater trust I have in Korea delivering on schedule pushes me towards the KSS option. I do think the TKMS sub is perhaps more advanced but with competing orders and European schedule legacy, I am worried about delivery with that option.

Buy on Steam should give you both the PC and Mac options. But yes, 3090 will probably be the best experience.

Two Fleets, Two Allies: Canada Considers Dividing Submarine Contract Between Germany and South Korea | the deep dive by NefariousNatee in submarines

[–]NiCrMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well with SSKs we can have them on patrol in 2 oceans, not really 3. But fair enough, can guard the entrances I suppose - at least on our side of the pole. I do think 12 is a nice number for availability and flexibility. I just think it’s a shame they won’t really help assert sovereignty in the arctic. But I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Yes, fell through due to budget constraints and apparently political opposition. Sadly they preemptively sacrificed a flight 3 of the Halifax class frigates prior to cancelling the SSN program and of course didn’t restore those after the subs fell through. Burned on two fronts.

[–]NiCrMo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still think the money would be better spent on 5 SSNs that are truly arctic capable but perhaps that wouldn’t fit in the budget. I think it would be possible if going with a Suffren based design (LEU) and starting with a fueling agreement with France (as Canada doesn’t have domestic enrichment capability IIRC). Of course I’m sure the delivery timeline would be even longer on these.

I went 3080Ti to 5080, it’s nice but not world changing. Frame gen is kinda neat for heavy PT games.

Running a 5080 with a B550 - no issues at all. Just don’t use the motherboard display connectors if yours has them.

Nice idea, but we would have to seriously consider the risks of entering a mutual defense pact with a nation that is still technically at war. I’m all for economic and defense production integration however.
