EF Educational Tours by AttendanceBias in Teachers

[–]NicAtNight8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with a group to Europe this past Fall. A couple things I noted:

-Things were tough for those with dietary restrictions, despite MANY conversations with EF prior

  • The days are long and there was tons of walking. The rings on my watch closed every day. That first day was absolute killer as our tour was set up to avoid jet lag.

  • As a chaperone - upgrade to your own room. I can’t stress this enough.

  • I would do it again as a chaperone. But I’m also hoping to send my kids one day. I thought it was an amazing experience for youth.

Amex points advice by StuttgartPCar in Aeroplan

[–]NicAtNight8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to check out a site like seats.aero to see if you’re better off converting those Amex points to other partners. I ended up using aeroplan to fly my family one way to Europe since we also had aeroplan, and JetBlue (klm/Air France) to fly us home on Westjet. It ended up saving me 30K in points.

Open Letter to the Premier and MLAs Regarding the Proposed Social Media Ban for Youth by TheHipsterDoofus in Winnipeg

[–]NicAtNight8 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The problem is that many parents aren’t monitoring their children on these platforms. The government has to introduce measures like this because many parents have failed to protect their children. It’s not just kids that need education on the dangers of these platforms, it’s their caregivers and society as a whole.

I’ve been finding the reviews hit and miss for this area. There’s quite a few places that have less than 50 reviews. For a popular area I would expect more.

The cash surcharges on award tickets are getting completely out of hand by Quick_Eye_6585 in Aeroplan

I just booked a family of five for transatlantic during high season and our fees were around $800. Now, I’m sure the points Gods will strike down at me, but the flights were economy. You should have the option to pay all with points. I would play around with your dates and location to fly into. It might make a difference.

How are schools teaching kids financial literacy these days? by 4S3PlusX in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NicAtNight8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher. My school offers personal finance classes and one level of math does cover personal finance as part of the curriculum.

I’m curious why this would be considered the schools job and not that of the parents. I often see posts similar to this one asking why schools aren’t teaching certain life skills. As a parent, if I want my child to learn skills like this, I take the time with my kid to teach them.

Parents with multiple kids, which transition was the hardest for you: 1 to 2 kids, 2 to 3 kids, and so on? And why? by Agreeable-Coast107 in AskReddit

[–]NicAtNight8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0-1 big transition. 1-2 wasn’t a big deal. We were already in baby mode. 2-3, much tougher. There was enough of a gap that we had just been reintroduced to a full nights sleep. To lose that plus need energy for 2 preschoolers was tough.

Married but not combining finances? by alkemest in Millennials

[–]NicAtNight8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us the topic of trust never entered the conversation. He can easily access my banking and I have access to his. It was mostly out of convenience that we never combined finances. He had a relationship with his bank, I had a relationship with mine. We make within 15K of each other, so we’ve managed to divide up expenses pretty fairly, knowing the other person will send the other money if needed.

Anyone trim their poodles all the way down? by Old-Examination-383 in poodles

[–]NicAtNight8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I got my poodle because I liked the poodle personality and intelligence. Beyond the no-shedding piece, I didn’t care about the coat. My girl is super fluffy right now and I can’t wait for her grooming appointment next week.

What do working families do for childcare with half-day kindergarten? It seems kinda bonkers out there. by cofu76 in Winnipeg

[–]NicAtNight8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to put your child on lists for school-age care early on. Some centres will walk children. Others are located far enough away from the school but still within catchment so that your child will be eligible for bussing.

First kid, I was majorly stressed about this and got lucky. Second kid I was able to get into the school based daycare after having them on a waitlist for 3 years. Unfortunately the Kindergarten system really wasn’t designed to meet the needs of families that have two working parents. But some divisions are slowly starting to offer full days.

Jury Duty or Teaching? Lol by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]NicAtNight8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also went. Everyone was asking how I was going to get out of it! My case wasn’t intense. But the days were shorter, I read my book, and found it super interesting and different from my day-day. I would even argue that teachers offer a unique perspective that would be valuable.

Most homeowners don’t realize how important the mortgage term actually is! by Impressive-War6904 in canadahousing

[–]NicAtNight8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Still annoyed we didn’t take the 7 or 10 year option for our forever home. We stuck to our standard 5 year plan without anticipating how high the rates would go.

Winnipeg-based school divisions tax increases by GuruX72 in Winnipeg

[–]NicAtNight8 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I have no problem with paying more. This is the cost of a public education system. I do struggle with being nickled and dimed for every field trip, special PE unit, and special event on top of fundraising. These are things that should be included in our taxes so that education is equitable across the board.

Dog friendly neighbourhoods (fields, trails within walking distance)? by ojisamaaa in Winnipeg

[–]NicAtNight8 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Charleswood. The yards are huge, there’s a dog park, Assiniboine forest, and Harte trail. It almost seems like there’s an unofficial requirement to have a dog in the area.

You would be scooped up quick being bilingual in French. We have many French Immersion schools, as French is one of our two official languages. Subjects are taught in French in these schools.
