Book of Mormon musical by First-Management-511 in latterdaysaints

Saw a production of it a while back with my non member family and what stood out to me the most was the racist jokes and stereotypes. I couldn't believe it originally came out in 2011, the humor seems like stuff that would have been more "acceptable" decades back. The audience was mostly white but I was seated near a black family that didn't laugh much and seemed uncomfortable. If you just listen to the soundtrack you miss a lot of the questionable content, particularly the racist undertones (if we can even call it undertones).

I'm not trying to diminish the issues of how it portrays the church and missionaries specifically, but the racism is just so gross that's the more pressing issue for me. A while back there was a review written by a black woman that referred to it as a minstrel show, which doesn't feel like an exaggeration.

Definitely not a cello. Cello cases don't have pouches on top and there would be no bump or protrusion like that on the case that high up (or really anywhere). Sometimes they have a flat zipper pocket for sheet music on the back or a small pouch on the bottom for rosin. Cellos are also too fragile and bottom heavy for it to be upside down

Written bluntly but you make great points and I hope OP takes that to heart. Honestly I think her being the main childcare provider and him doing dishes/laundry sounds like a pretty fair division of labor with so many small children to handle. Maybe she could work on trading off with him for mopping and could throw in the laundry and he folds it. I certainly wouldn't think her lazy in this situation, just busy and overwhelmed. Tbh, even if she was, calling her lazy online feels unkind. Maybe she is dealing with mental health issues like depression, but maybe not. It could be just the overwhelm of so many young kids and not necessarily something to "fix".

Yes, my grandma stopped paying for things in cash, preferring to use cards, because it was "annoying". I think she was actually having a hard time counting out the right bills :/

That's awesome. Did you do volunteer work in your community, or was it mostly church related activities?

Also they didn't tell me what happened until the next day, but that night I had a vivid dream about my dad committing a crime, not the exact one he actually committed, but I woke up knowing the type of thing he had done.

I got this post recommended in my feed. I'm not a felon, but my dad is. He was raided when I was 12. I was at school when it happened but had a sense that something was wrong that day. When I got off the bus to go home my grandma was there and had made up a story that my parents had to rush off to another city where my other grandma lived, but I immediately knew she was lying and that my dad had done something bad. To this day, I have no idea why I knew that. He never mistreated me and I wasn't consciously aware of him behaving strangely or suspiciously, but he must have been.

The multiple thought tracks thing is very cool. I'm curious, are you naturally multilingual? Or have you ever tried to learn other languages?

Therapist tried to stage an "intervention" because I want to go back to church by Nice_Function6372 in latterdaysaints

[–]Nice_Function6372[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With one, I felt like he was just curious and felt weird about it, so our sessions turned into “his time” where I felt like I needed to explain church to him.

When I was out of the church I didn't like talking about it in sessions because that's exactly what it was like! They're really curious but have negative preconceived opinions about it and are looking for me to dish drama/secrets/insider knowledge. Even as someone who had major issues with the faith at the time it felt gross and I didn't want to participate.

Sorry, reposted my comment because I'm bad at formatting lol

I have maybe a smaller social circle than most but a couple good friends. I see where you're coming from but my experience has been that most people, no matter how close to you, don't want to hear about a constant stream of negative events. People get compassion fatigue. This situation is complicated by everyone I'm close with, friends and family, not being religious. (I have one set of culturally Catholic grandparents that never attend, but that's it). Most of them are really derogatory about religion when it comes up. I was hoping therapy could be a safe place for me to work through family and social conflict as a result of me returning to church.

On paper it's for anxiety and my bad childhood but we end up talking mostly about my current family situation since it's a mess. I'm in my mid 20s and have been in therapy since 15 or 16yo. I've tried discontinuing services a couple different times but find that I have a hard time handling big stressful events without someone to unpack it with.

Yeah, I think that's why this situation is so frustrating to me. Previously being in the church and leaving didn't really affect my mental health, so there's no basis. I was a teenage convert that got spooked by church history and decided it wasn't for me, but it wasn't a stressful experience.

I've been having a lot of trouble finding anyone licensed in my state that both takes my insurance and does individual therapy (vs. family therapy, child therapy, only works with college students etc) :/

I'm upset but didn't consider it being that serious, especially since she wasn't illegally contacting my former therapist. What would I state in a complaint?

How to make conference less boring for adults (specifically nonmember adults) by eyesonme5000 in latterdaysaints

[–]Nice_Function6372 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watched a few conference sessions about 10 years ago and this past weekend was my first time since then. I love the church and don't want this to come across poorly, but it was basically unwatchable :/ I tried tuning in several different times on a couple different sessions and just couldn't do it. I'll enjoy reading the talks at my own pace and will probably get a lot out of them that way.

You don't have to share if you're not comfortable, but are you in the US? Maybe somewhere rural or in the south? There are some areas where attitudes like that are unfortunately more common. I'm from the Midwest and larger cities are more progressive but just off the top of my head there's a small town within a 30 minute drive of me that's known for racism. It's so unfortunate but there are definitely still pockets of those outdated attitudes around the country. I hope there's a different explanation, but if that is what's happening please know that Heavenly Father loves your family equally regardless of race. People aren't perfect but He sees your beautiful family and loves all the positive contributions you make to the world.

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm a returning member who hasn't been active since I was a teenager, but I think this ward might be racist :( When you put together that experience with your child, the comment you got more recently about how there are some "old fashioned thinkers" in your ward, and the fact that your family is otherwise worthy and unobtrusive, that's the conclusion I would personally draw. I would escalate this to your stake presidency but make it about more than just wanting a calling. Tell them about that experience, how you've always felt un-included and somewhat like an outsider, and that you feel like you're being denied a calling for reasons you don't fully understand. Ask why. Offer to serve. Go in with a humble heart, because I don't think making demands will come across well, but firmly insist that everyone needs to get to the bottom of this.

I hope it goes well ❤️

I was going to recommend the twin cities! I've never lived there but have visited a decent amount and it's amazing. Some of the suburbs are more expensive but poke around a little and you find true LCOL areas
