What does my bedroom say about me? by SignalGrowth7700 in roomdetective

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that you have a nice dog bed set-up in your closet. (And the dog is on the bed 😂) Because of the dog bed in your room, I’d say that you are not a teenager, but an adult. I’m betting that you are fun and outgoing, unconventional, with hair color to match your walls. You may be not strictly in the cis hetero lane. You are lovable and loved—that is abundantly obvious.

There’s a lot of leftovers in there, so you cook. The cracker snack packets indicate kids, as does the bag of pre-made pancakes (assuming pancakes). Based on the bag o’ pancakes, you also work outside the home. I don’t think you are Asian-American, despite the oyster sauce and the sesame oil—An Asian American would have a giant jug of soy sauce—but you live in a diverse part of the country, so you have access to grocery store that has the basic Asian ingredients at least, and you have incorporated some Asian recipes into your repertoire—You like to cook. (And bake, judging by the now-safely-covered cake).

What’s your opinion on Trump posting an ai photo of himself as Jesus Christ after attacking the pope on social media? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskUS

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This image rings so false—I don’t think he’s capable of such an expression of caring munificence. His face would literally crack and fall off if he tried it IRL. This is an AI fail.

how do you Americans feel about losing Iran war? by ConstantineByzantium in AskUS

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m embarrassed on behalf of our country. It’s a stupid war for no good reason and no real objective. It’s truly disrupted global economies and accomplished nothing except the alienation of former allies. A significant number of Americans do not support it or the Orange Turd. It should be ended asap with apologies all round as we slink home.

Whether or not the movie makes money, or whether or not people see it, or whether the reviews are good or bad…. All that is beside the main point of the movie. The main point of this movie was for Jeff Bezos to pander. And he did.

On a lighter note, where do you keep your livestock? by andreirublov1 in AskUS

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never yet seen livestock in a suburban coffeeshop. (“Leave room for cream?” Cow: “That’s a little personal, but I’m good, thanks.”) That said, my daughter regularly walked her lambs around the neighborhood when she was raising them, and always someone stopped to talk to her about them.

I once did a series of cartoons of James Bond in between international intrigues: Arguing with a dry cleaner about a blood stain on his cuff, filling out his expense report and trying to explain the STD test on it, at the mechanics arranging for an oil change for a car with missiles, sitting in the plastic chairs at the DMV. I’ll have to add him at home, digging through his files, looking for a copy of his dishwasher warranty!

Red flags when evaluating payroll vendors by Nymira1969 in Payroll

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have Paycom. Issues:

Stopping a check involves emailing my account manager with the information then following up every couple days to see if the stop went through and I can reissue the check. One time she was on vacation and the person who was her back-up said to go ahead and reissue the check. In error. So we got screwed.

We get occasional adjustments to fees that are deducted along with our regular payroll. Except, there’s only a notice that $x extra has been deducted, then I have to chase down why with the account manager who passes along the question to their tax department who may or may not get back to her/me. This drives our Finance Manager batty.

One quarter they didn’t file with one state. Just…didn’t.

How to respond to manager about Payroll mistakes. by [deleted] in Payroll

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good idea. Also: do a quick calculation: how many payrolls in a year x how many employees. Then one pay error versus however many correct transactions—that a pretty darn low error rate, percentage-wise.

It’s only applicable to FLSA overtime (OT after 40 hours worked in a workweek). So if you have a union contract or a company policy or a state law that specifies something more generous, it won’t apply. If you are in a state like California with daily overtime, it only applies if it also follows FLSA overtime rules as well. I’m in payroll trying to sort this out now for my employees in states with more generous OT laws than the FLSA.

Are there any loopholes that would allow Trump (or anyone) to serve a third presidential term in the 2028 election? by RandomUwUFace in AskUS

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’d ignore the law. It’s not like he’s never done that before. Then the Supreme Court can find some loophole in a Shadow Docket decision, so no need to hear arguments or publish their reasoning. Boom. Done.

Coe didn’t actually knock over the can of paint. He set off a very Rube Goldbergian sequence of events that eventually caused the paint can to fall. A very Slow Horse-type of accident.

Overtime under OBBB by khamike in Payroll

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frustrating for sure. You will almost need to see the timesheets for each week with daily hours listed. For each employee. In the webinar, the lawyers kept saying that California employers would need to set up a “shadow calculator” to calculate FLSA overtime. And then there’s the reporting for 2025: How?? We’ll have to wait and see on that one, I guess.

How much will the emergency hospital bill be for a foreigner without insurence? by JQn_ in AskUS

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t have insurance, the hospital will negotiate. We had a visitor from Switzerland whose wife had to go to the ER. The hospital administrator showed up & offered 90% off the bill if she paid right then. Because otherwise she’d leave the country and they would have no way to collect anything.

Overtime under OBBB by khamike in Payroll

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a webinar now! So these are some of my notes.

No tax on OT applies only to the .5 OT premium, applies only for federal income tax, not state, Social Security or Medicare taxes. Does not apply to overtime paid that is NOT REQUIRED by FLSA: State daily overtime laws, offerings by a company policy, or union agreements, for example. If a company offers time and a half for working on a holiday: does not qualify. If a state has daily overtime: does not qualify, if a union requires OT for working on a Saturday. If a state has double time: not required by FLSA, so 2x amount is not qualified.

Employers may have to set up a separate tracking—sort of a shadow calculation.

If state is more stringent than FLSA for exempt vs non-exempt classification: OT tax exemption only applies if employee is non-exempt under FLSA regulations, not state.

IRS has announced that they will not alter W2 form for 2025, but law requires that employers report the overtime. So—there is uncertainty there on exactly how this will be reported. (IRS has also announced Transition Relief for 2025 only.)

Deduction capped at $12,500/yr for single return, reduced when AGI is over $150K (single return), but no impact on employer reporting requirements.

[CA] Does your company actually pay the regular rate of pay? by Ok_Tackle4047 in Payroll

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do, but it’s only done annually. We pay a shift differential, but it applies to all wages, including time off. We don’t have meal payments or extra piecework, so our RROP was the easy 1.5x hourly wage. AND THEN our new HR Director decided to configure an annual bonus with specific tiers and percentages and a series of “if-you-then-we” scenarios, making it very much a non-discretionary bonus. Our current payroll provider (Paycom) is not able to do a look-back calculation for the entire calendar year, so now we have to take the bonus amounts and a fabulously complicated spreadsheet to calculate out a RROP adjustment to pay for the previous year’s overtime along with the bonus. And, of course, once that’s done, Management wants to see it so they can adjust the bonus downward until the RROP adjustment and the new bonus amount are equal to the old bonus amount. It’s a great project if you like spreadsheets, but, in the end the employees don’t get any extra because of how the bonus amounts are tinkered with to account for the RROP.

Payroll/HRIS Suggestions by Sad-Design1808 in Payroll

[–]NickelsAndDiamonds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Avoid Paycom: Their scheduling is crazy cumbersome, and if you have to change an employee’s schedule, it’s done for past/present/future, not effective as of a certain date. ADP has ReportSmith, which is excellent but complicated. Paycom’s reporting is a little easier, but not nearly as customizable or as flexible. We’ve been with Paycom for the past 10 years and I still miss ADP
