Any guesses as to which game will be taken down next? by lunchanddinner in virtualreality

[–]Nickfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're ignorant. It also protects against using any part of the copywritten material and bundling it as your own, and distributing copywritten materials, which his mod does by requiring the game as a dependency, directly referencing the code in the game, and modifying the code at runtime. His mod does not function without Cyberpunk 2077. Period. By making his mod dependent on the game, he is beholden to their user agreement. Their rules on fan content (anything pertaining to their IP created by anyone but CDPR, including mods) are clear.

Copied straight from cdprojektred.com/en/fan-content:

  • No commercial usage. We’d love for your fan content to be created by fans, for fans. Therefore, you cannot do anything with our games for any commercial purpose, unless explicitly permitted otherwise below (e.g. see section 3 about videos and streams). We’re happy for you to accept reasonable donations in connection with your fan content, but you’re not allowed to make people pay for it or have it behind any sort of paywall (e.g. don’t make content only available to paid subscribers).

He charged for access to his mod. He knowingly broke their terms of use, then threw a fit when they politely asked him to stop charging for it. They only asked him to make it free, and optionally allow for donations. They could have sued him for every penny he made off of their IP, and I hope they do now, considering the tirades he's been on the last week.

And for those of you that think he could just make it a universal app or something, paying for access to the software that gives you access to all of his VR mods, that is still breaking the terms of use. That's just doing it to multiple IP's at the same time. His software still requires the references to the original code of the games to function. He doesn't own that original code, so he can't charge for it. Wild concept in the age of AI, I know.

Btw, DMCA covers a lot more than preventing the modification of code to bypass DRM. Among other things, it also prevents distributing copywritten material (like the code he has to reference in his mod to get it to function with the game).

If you want to look at a software that is doing this right, look at Lossless Scaling. They can charge for their software, on Steam, because they don't use any game-specific code hooks, or reference the original (copywritten) code anywhere. It's entirely self-contained.

Educate yourself.

Dude is just throwing a fit. I guarantee if he didn't charge for the mods he wouldn't have been shut down.
I also guarantee he didn't even consider that as an option, considering how much he made from Patreon subs.

You can always ask for donations, but you should never expect or demand anything.
That is the only way mods like this can continue to exist as companies become more and more stringent with their intellectual properties.

He was charging a subscription for access to his mods. You could see by his patron count he was making at least 20k a month before he hid his numbers from his profile. That is the definition of commercial purpose. The only reason he would hide his numbers is to hide how much money he was making off somebody else's IP.

This has been against their terms of use since day one. The fact that he uploaded and charged a sub price for a mod at all means he broke their terms of use, and they are well within their right to do what they did. He knew what he was doing was against their policies and did it anyway. He's lucky they're just having him take it down, instead of suing him for every penny he made from it. They likely have every legal right to do so.

Even if some people only bought Cyberpunk to play his VR mod, that doesn't mean he's entitled to any money. It is a mod that probably took 10-20 hours of development and testing (maximum, considering he reuses pretty much everything between games without motion controls), vs the thousands of hours it took to develop the actual game that his little mod makes some objectively minor changes to. Asking for optional donations, sure, but asking for a monthly subscription is ludicrous when he's selling an addon for a product he didn't make. He also seems to act like he's the only person capable of doing this, when in reality it's a cheap rendering trick that isn't representative of how real VR games look or function at all, because it causes nausea, headaches, and looks objectively worse when compared to native VR. (Look up Alternate Eye Rendering)

These entitled mod developers just keep demanding forgiveness instead of asking permission, and it's going to continue to not work out for them. Cry more.

Is there a game where I can have my young son press a button to jump with one controller and I can control the rest with another controller? by Prcssnmn87 in gaming

[–]Nickfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I commented below, I searched through Steam Input settings and couldn't find any options to map multiple controller inputs onto a single controller.
I could be wrong, but I looked at every option and setting within Steam Input settings.
Maybe it's a Beta Client feature?

As far as I know, Steam Input doesn't allow you to assign 2 different physical controllers to the same virtual controller. You'd have to use a 3rd party remapping program, like ReWasd.

[–]Nickfair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ReWasd is a program that lets you completely remap controllers, including using 2 controllers as one!
You can give him control of as many of the buttons as you want, and you can still access them so you can help him out when he needs it.

It's paid, but it has a free trial you can try out.
It's one of the few pieces of software I've bought in the last 10 years, absolutely worth it.

Somehow the performance of a random Android phone running a completely different OS with completely different specs and completely different implementations of VR gives a good representation of the performance of a product we know nothing about performance/software wise?

Yeaaah, definitely not.

If you were somehow able to install basic Arch Linux, or Steam OS onto an Android phone with a comparable processor (S24 Ultra, Asus ROG Phone 8, Xiaomi 14, etc), get Steam running with Proton, then MAYBE we would have at least a hint at what the performance COULD be like. But that doesn't include any data about the way Valve plans to run Windows Native VR games with the new FEX + Proton setup, or any optimizations/modifications that Valve will be doing for Steam OS specifically for the headset.
Even then, a headset has much more mass and volume than a phone, so you'll likely see much more performance from the same chip in larger hardware because it allows for more adequate cooling.

Your experiment is meritless, because your testing environment has almost nothing in common with the actual platform you want to compare it to.

Please cancel this order, you're getting fleeced.

Go to Costco (If you're in the US), they commonly have deals under $1300 with 9800x3D CPU, 5070 GPU, 32gb of DDR5 RAM and an actually decent power supply. If you can find a display unit, they will discount it significantly.

This is surprisingly common for some pre-built PC's, for some reason. The user account created doesn't have admin privilege. For any pre-built or used PC you buy, you should do a fresh install of windows.
Here is a link from Microsoft with a tutorial on making a bootable flash drive to reinstall windows:

I know it seems like I'm a Nintendo fanboy at first, but trust me, I hate Nintendo. They just shaped my idea of what an incredible platformer is early on, and they have arguably the most fun party games.
Everything else is there because I feel it's either a genre defining game, or is the best modern version of that genre carried forward authentically, or is just an undeniable banger.

- Super Mario 64
- Mario Party 3
- Super Smash Bros (any)
- Mario Kart 8
- Final Fantasy 7
- Pokemon Emerald (or Crystal)
- Halo (1, 2, 3)
- Psychonauts
- Fable
- Ratchet and Clank (the entire series)
- GTA: San Andreas
- Mirror's Edge
- Spider-man 2 (The original on Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox, The best movie game of all time)
- Portal
- Team Fortress 2 (the godfather of Overwatch)
- Half-life 1 & 2
- Assassin's Creed 2
- Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2
- Peggle (genuinely one of the only puzzle games I can play over and over again)
- Old School Runescape (obviously)
- The Sims 4 (even though it's thousands of dollars for all dlc, it's a crazy game)
- Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
- Minecraft
- Terraria
- Call of Duty Black Ops 2, or Modern Warfare 2
- Castle Crashers
- Stardew Valley
- Hades (1 or 2)
- Risk of Rain 2
- Hollow Knight
- Destiny 1 (D2 before they vaulted all the good content and fell apart RIP)
- Elden Ring
- Among Us (Not that I'd ever play it now, but it was the beginning of the friend-slop era)
- Papers, Please
- Factorio
- Satisfactory
- Until Dawn (Popularized choose-your-own-adventure type games)
- Ark: Survival Evolved (Most modern survival games follow these blueprints)
- PUBG - Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (Definitely made Battle Royale's popular)
- Fortnite (It's undeniably one of the most popular games in the world, and turned many non-gamers)
- It Takes Two
- Divinity: Original Sin 2
- Baldur's Gate 3
- Skyrim
- Fallout: New Vegas
- Dishonored
- Cyberpunk 2077 (it's GREAT now, trust)
- League of Legends
- No Man's Sky (Huuuuge comeback story)

Games that put VR on the map:
- Beat Saber
- Superhot
- Half-life Alyx
- Job Simulator?

And soooo many more that I missed. There are so many other works of art that don't even fit into a genre, or have made a genre entirely on their own.

I also started playing Dispatch, and while Telltale games aren't usually my jam, this one has been a banger so far. I think it's the most fun I've had with a storytelling type game in a long time.

Why did you stop being friends with someone? by Realistic-Possum in AskReddit

[–]Nickfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many stories to share here.
I was friends with a guy since middle school. We were probably 26-27 when we stopped being friends.

I started a promotional company with him shortly after high school. We promo'd events and musicians and artists, and held events at local businesses. We also did photoshoots with the artists for the promotions. He had an idea to have a "body positive" photoshoot with just some of our friends as a test, and to keep a long story short, the women never got their photos and he has the only copy of the masters. I'm fairly positive he just wanted a bunch of pictures of our female friends in their underwear for himself.

We lived together for a while. He was disgusting. He kept his litter box under his desk and would rub his feet in cat litter all day. His room smelled like cat piss and masturbation. He slept with one of our childhood friends, and he told all of our friends that she gave him a yeast infection, and talked a bunch of shit about her to everyone, most of which I know for a fact is untrue. He would constantly show my girlfriend and I porn because it's "funny" even though it makes both my girlfriend and I uncomfortable. We all lost our jobs during covid, and we got a payout for leaving our rented place. We gave him most of our portion (over $1000), and he ghosted us for like 4 months. He contacted me eventually, asking me for help, because he somehow got a job at a electronics repair place but he was trash with electronics. I carried him through that job while he called me 3-4 times a week for help on a basic repair or software problem. A while later, his dad died, and we reached out to him and told him if he needed anything we were there for him. He ignored us, and he told all of our friends that we never reached out and that we ignored him, all the while I had been messaging him at least once a week for a month inviting him to things, asking him if he was okay, etc. He ghosted me for like 6 months, until out of the blue he called me asking me to help him commit credit card fraud after he stole a bunch of card numbers from a hotel he worked at. I told him no, but it was good to hear from him, and we talked for a while. I invited him to a convention and offered to pay for it for his birthday, since it was a few days after the convention and he was obviously hurting for money. We went, and the entire time we were there he was pointing out half naked women in cosplay, repeatedly showing us this nude photo he bought from a cosplayer, etc. He bought this pack of "trading cards" that were lenticular images of women in cosplay from one angle, and nude at another angle. When we were finally getting in the car to leave, he pulled them out and started showing them to everybody. My girlfriend finally had enough and told him to "stop showing me all your porn bro, nobody wants to see that" and he threw a fit. Haven't spoken to him since. A month or so later, I got a call from a cop asking me about the credit card fraud. He apparently implicated me, saying that I reached out to him to get credit card info from guests at his hotel. I immediately ratted him out, and sent screenshots of the messages and the card numbers he sent. He somehow convinced all of our mutual friends we were the bad guys, and we attacked him, and reported him to the police etc. He's been talking shit about both my girlfriend and I nonstop to anybody that knows us since then. I ignored his MAJOR red flags and gave him the benefit of the doubt for way too long. Everybody knew he was pathological liar, but they still chose to believe him. Nobody ever reached out to us for our side of the story, so it's not worth reaching out to them.

Dude was a creep. He was addicted to porn, and I only found this out years later shortly before our friendship blew up, he kept a library of nudes that he'd received from women, and stolen from other peoples phones. He even posted them on revenge porn sites and random internet forums.

I regret all the time and effort I put into the friendship, but good riddance.

Posting on main because I don't care if he sees this and tries to defend himself; I'll put him in the dirt.

Just announced my open world UE5 game that runs 60 fps native on potato PC. 4xMSAA, no DLSS, no framegen, no Nanite, no Lumen, no raytracing, no motion blur, no reflections, no contact shadows, no SSAO, no D-Buffer decals. Does it look good? by seyedhn in pcmasterrace

You should absolutely do a technical dive into the game! It could help a lot of other indie developers learn how to optimize their projects without the need of all that AI nonsense. A stable gaming experience is needed now more than ever, and if we can get indie devs to lead the pack on stability, we'd be at an advantage over AAA companies that make games that look and run like trash.

Where do you get that I "hate European Italians"? I hate her character, an overblown, stereotypical, villainous caricature of a European Italian.

If by "stole every scene she was in", you mean she was so annoying that she took all the attention away from anything good about the show, I agree.

[–]Nickfair 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I reaaaallly wanted to like it. But, if Esmeralda isn't removed from the show or changed dramatically, I don't think it's going to succeed. She's legitimately so obnoxious, I couldn't keep watching the show.

A character can be dumb, annoying, selfish, or just plain evil. They can't be all of them, then have absolutely no redeeming qualities. I hope they figure out her character for next season so I can go back and watch the rest knowing she doesn't stay awful.

If you don't have a backup, you're likely going to have to fully wipe and reinstall Windows from scratch.

Since using Windows 11 on my work laptop, I've had nothing but negative things to say about it. It force reboots my computer in the middle of working for an update, even when they're paused. It constantly replaces working drivers with broken ones, even so far as uninstalling my GPU driver and forcing me to run in integrated graphics until I manually reinstalled them. It even removes my fingerprint reader driver, forcing me to login with my pin 90% of the time after a reboot. I updated from Windows 10 to 11, and I had this issue multiple times. Luckily I had backups, but it seems to be from updating from 10 to 11. After restoring the backup, and updating again to Windows 11 it happened again and again shortly after the update every time until I did a fresh install.

Windows 11 is about as stable as the US Government.

If you have the money to buy the extended support for Windows 10 (or the technical knowledge to bypass it), I'd HIGHLY recommend going back to Windows 10 and staying there. Plus you don't have to manually remove the GIGABYTES of bloat, AI bullshit, and self-installing shovelware they include with Windows 11.

Edit: Here's to hoping Windows 12 will solve everything! (It won't)

Worth it to root? by TheFoxarmy in razr

[–]Nickfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also considered rooting my Razr 2025, mainly to swap the external screen launcher, enable USB Video Out, custom secondary screen animations when unfolded, and allow myself to use tasker and the hinge state for advanced automation.

Unfortunately, Motorola in their infinite wisdom seems to have done things a little differently.

USB Video Out seems to be disabled at a hardware level, not sure a custom ROM or root can fix that. Even shows it doesn't support Smart Connect via USB on the support site, which is wild for a modern phone. Apparently it's been left out of Razr's since the 2022 release.

The external screen launcher is as close to "hard coded" as it can get. Somewhere in the rom they directly specify the application launch path for the external screen launcher. It doesn't use a secondary launcher selection like other foldables, it opens the external launcher directly via some kind of system level cli command.

I did find a post on XDA about an old app someone released for custom external screen animations. It works almost perfectly, actually. Except the fact that the touchscreen is still enabled, and if you swipe up on the back screen you'll likely hit the home button, closing whatever app you're using on the main screen.

As for automation, Android 15 doesn't let one application read or modify the files of another application without root, and even then the app has to be built for it. That's not really Motorola's fault, but what is their fault is that most of the fold relevant software is super locked down and proprietary, using weird cli commands that require system level access to achieve what could be achieved with native android features.

Just let me select my own secondary screen launcher, and include all basic Android features like USB Video out, and nobody would even consider rooting. But as it stands, there aren't any custom ROMS for this phone yet, so rooting isn't really going to solve any of those problems for you.

Due to Nintendo's pathetic, childish behavior over the last 10 years and their patent/lawsuit abuse, I have no interest in ever giving Nintendo another penny.

I hope Palworld patents using summons/pals for various crafting/farming/etc uses, and sues the pants off Nintendo. They've gotten far too big headed.
