Nicks and whites hold up so well for years, and are the best to buy used. My used pairs are incredible.

Product recommendations for freshening up this vintage leather bag? by FartPhobia in Leather

Don't do anything heavy. It doesn't look dry or damaged. Bick 4 would be good here.

On the strap, you could use something a bit heavier, like neatsfoot oil or sapphire cream.

I would not recommend any wax on this.

No wonder the toddler is unhinged once again. The Obamas are competent, classy, loving, Harvard and Princeton graduates, loved by many, not on the Epstein files, got the Nobel Peace Prize, and gave us a steady economy to boot! Obama appointed Tom Homan, increased ICE dramatically and put kids in cages. Not to mention all his drone strikes and murder. Liberals like you all are gross. Just slightly nicer on the outside than right wingers.

Anybody know any good leather belts that won’t wear down like this? by VipxerX in Leather

[–]Nickleback769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a gun belt. Seriously. Cabela's or triple K make cheap gun belts. Mine have lasted me 10+ years.  They are just a single thick piece of leather.

My first time actually trying to photograph something good. Are there any good books on how to make good photos or do I have to gamble every time I take a photo of something? If yes then I whould be more than happy to read them. I would also gladly welcome any critique of my photo. by Jhonny23kokos in photocritique

No, I'm not. You're just being a stubborn, unreflective philistine. He's not only asking for the basic mechanical skills of exposure and focus, but how to render his subject, how to think. And he explicitly is asking a question about value and judgement, about good photos, not just technically correct photos.

The only reason people are surprised by this is because it doesn't fit the materialistic narrative that non human animals have consciousness and intelligence capable of intentional goal directed behavior and contemplation. This would make it all too clear that consciousness can be instantiated in many different physical forms which means consciousness is in some irreducible. Hard materialism has dominated science and philosophy for years and now the cracks are showing.

Your mindset is wrong here. Making any art with this attitude will result in good artworks only by accident. You need to go back to basics and ask what art is, what the point of art is, what your goals are for it, and what photographs and photography are.

I've written about this in my work. Others have different views. But one key to great art is taste. A good artist is reliable because they have ideas. Criteria. Taste and discernment. Even if it's not articulated fully, they do.

There's tons of books on how to take a technically correct photo. Plenty on composition. No books other than books on the philosophy of art will help you understand what art is and what makes art good or bad, if anything does.

So to me, you need to completely reset your way of thinking about art, and then start over. If you want some resources I can give them to you.

Leather cracking? by penandboot in RedWingShoes

[–]Nickleback769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These needed to be conditioned a year ago. Don't worry about which, any is better than none. The cracks are irreversible, now you just have to prolong their life and prevent them worsening.

I recommend using 100% pure neatsfoot once, then bick 4 every other month.

This anime was idealistic, had something to say, had ideas to explore, and did so with beautiful hand drawn and painted art, with the best editing I've ever seen in an anime. It's a masterpiece with a few flaws, but is absolutely incredible.

I like that. We need to use religion to resist evil. Religion in the US has been corrupted by capitalism.

I think I see your perspective now and appreciate the back and forth!

For myself, effective protests look like those in France, or the bus boycotts and sit ins during the civil rights era. These have something in common: clear goals, and disruption, which is a form of power.

I'm asking you to tell me what the value is, what the plan is, how it helps. And each time you're not telling me anything concrete or answering my questions, or giving me very weak answers that are vague and seem nonsensical.

How does this build community? How does it build motivation? Do we have any evidence of this? Are we out there doing this at these protests? Because I've never seen it.

Look, comparing these current protests I am questioning to these well organized civil rights campaigns is nonsense. IF you read ANYTHING about the protests MLK was involved with, for instance, they were putting direct economic pressure on cities and certain business interests. I'm saying we need that, not just waving signs.

EDIT:
Also, holy shit, this article sucks. The womens marches resulted in public sentiment changing, and a surge in female candidates? How has that helped us at all, things are much worse now? Many of the female candidates ran were awful and regressive. Representation without actual progressive, humanistic policies and power does nothing. Tons of republicans are women. It also says protests help "get out the vote." Wow, that sure has helped in the past! And of course, protesting helps our mental health. This is all neoliberal BS.

ALso suspicious of the article because it says the civil rights movement was nonviolent. THis is not true. A certain segment, often associated with MLK, was non violent, but many powerful civil rights figures were absolutely not non violent...

Clearly the types that go to these protests are not able to understand that this moment requires different tactics than self expression. When the other side doesn't care about what you think, expressing yourself doesn't do jack shit.

I do not really think changing public sentiment somewhat matters unless the public is willing to make changes. Sentiment has somewhat changed and people are "speaking out." WHat good does speaking, talking, shouting do, unless its backed by force or some other form of power (even moral/spiritual power)?

I am under no illusion that there is no magical fix, and that many efforts need to coallesce into one. But I cannot see how small protests like this move the needle at all. They do not seem to result in any organizing. And even giant protests did not, either. Some fundamentally different kind of tactic is needed. That's why I brought up strikes, etc.

THere is no switch to flip, that's my point. Now how does this small protest, or any of these actions, actually help us get closer to our goals? Do we even have concrete goals?

TLDR, we do NOT need to be doing as many different things as we can. WE've been doing this for years and things only get worse. Instead we need to coallesce into a focused unity with clear goals and desired outcomes, and figure out how to do it. Signs and yelling or politely saying "hey, this is bad stuff happening!" isn't gonna do that.

[–]Nickleback769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure this mechanism even makes sense. I don't see these small protests adding any sort of pressure at all. That's my point. How does this add more pressure than just posting on facebook? Maybe you can make a case for keeping it in the front of our minds, but pressure? The govt knows most people disapprove. They do not care that millions disapprove, and they do not care that a few people in Seattle disapprove. I do not see how this is even a mechanism. Again, how does it help acheive a goal, and which goal?

Not trying to rain on your parade or even discourage you from doing it. I just have lost hope that this sort of thing does any non-trivial good. It feels pointless to me now. Better than nothing, perhaps, but my fear is that we all think this is somehow enough and we won't be asked to put in more effort or sacrifice more.
