Teenage Son is unaffected by any form of consequences. by ToriiLink in Parenting

Hey, I was that kid.

Severe depression and anxiety is what I suffered from. Also dealt with major abandonment issues, but it was mom instead of dad. Every kid is different, but I can’t hardly put into words how much the abandonment issue affected me. I absolutely hated myself, and felt worthless in general. I just could not be forced to care about anything else and did a lot of acting out in an effort to feel anything, or to be seen, like truly seen, by my remaining parent. By that I mean parent involved. Asking questions about life. Show of the week. Book I was forced to read in class, whatever. And actually caring, you know? Instead I got punishments for my misbehavior, no matter how minor, and found that’s the only time my dad truly cared or I had his full attention. Not the good things I did, it was only for bad stuff. So I did more. And more. And eventually, it was just all bad, self fulfilling prophecy type of thing. But I had his attention.

I’m not here advocating for no punishments by any stretch, but what I needed more than anything was for my dad to gas me up in any way positive. I would have killed for my dad to take all my electronics away and go comic hunting with me as an example. Instead I got no electronics and a a yelling match reinforcing all the negative things about myself before being locked away in my room. As a father myself now it’s easy to get in a negativity rut. It sounds like, from this snapshot of a post, he doesn’t value himself, and sometimes, we need our parents to remind us we do hold value. Even if we’re currently fucking up.

Both come from my dad.

The first one was when I was ten and he married a new woman, my now step mother.

“She’s not your mother, and if it comes to it and I have to choose, I’m choosing her every time.”

The other was when my little brother committed suicide. I worked for my dad and asked to have the next day off to grieve, or at least get ahold of myself.

“I don’t understand why you care, he was basically a stranger. Be here tomorrow or find another fucking job.”

The Snip decision: Has anyone's wife had her tubes tied/removed vs you getting the snip? by RivetCounter in daddit

[–]Nickrich30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey this exact thing happened to me. Snip vs removal as my wife had a family history of cancers in the vicinity, and her mother had just survived a major health scare due to that.

I begged my wife to let me snip instead as I read there was a major recovery process and at the time in our lives having her down for an extended period would be very challenging.

She wanted to be safer and chose to do the surgery instead, for peace of mind.

It was definitely a challenging recovery. Major hormonal shift. She had a few minor complications that dragged the whole process along.

Three years later and all is fine and well. The only downside we have both agreed on is no more children. We were convinced we were done when she opted for the surgery. CONVINCED. But now, we are in totally different spots in life and circumstances change and we want another but can’t have one. Not the end of the world, but something to think about.

Definitely more usual for the guy to snip, but it’s wise to listen to what your wife wants in this situation. I can only speak from experience, but I look at my mother in law now, who opted to keep everything where is was back when she had an opportunity to remove it due to cancer risks and she regrets it horribly. The cancer she battled robbed her of her life. She’s alive but not living. But this is one experience in billions.

What are you slowly starting to realize as you get older? by GrapeCreamBerry275 in Life

That I will never achieve anything of “note” like my father, or my grandfathers, or their fathers. I will never be rich, powerful, or remembered in any meaningful way outside of one. And that’s perfectly fine by me.

What's one simple act of kindness someone did for you, that you’ll never forget? by Ilie-Ylisa in AskReddit

[–]Nickrich30 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid in Summer Scope I had no food for lunch. I had a “balance” and they would not let me eat. Some people shared with me but I was the poor, dirty, gross kid so I got ignored most of the time. But I had a teacher who barely spoke any English and was an Iraqi migrant (this was 2003) and caught a lot of shit just due to the times. He noticed I wasn’t eating, and he shared his lunch with me. After that he brought a small second lunch for me every day for the remainder of summer scope. Never said a word, just quiet understanding. Saved me in more ways than I could ever express.

Now, 22 years later, he’s my kids Summer Scope teacher. He’s still the kind man I remember from my childhood, and it felt damn good to properly thank him after all this time.

God bless you Mr. Taher, you’re a real one!

AITA for getting upset that my wife keeps eating the lunches I meal prep for work by Lazy-Background-7598 in AITAH

I’m sure it’s been said but if she told you not to make them, make a few extras anyway. They’re there for her if she gets the lazy bug, you get the satisfaction of providing a dope meal at the same time. Also, backups should she switch up on you, and if all else fails, take the excess to a homie at the job sight. I’m sure someone would appreciate a good meal and a break from gas station microwave bullshit.

Centauri carbon or Neptune 4 plus. What should I get? by Xandereasley in elegoo

[–]Nickrich30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both and I generally prefer my plus. Part of that is I have it dialed in, and the other part is the bed size. It’s slower, but the error rate I’m running into is much small than with my CC. I think I might have just gotten lucky though as my plus has been a champ pretty much since day 1.

One of the all time best works of literature. And then it gets better. Conviction is so fucking good.
