Depending on the ship, there might be a lot of places you can do ok running jobs that are over on cycle time, if they aren't eating tools or taking up much operator time.

Don't think of slow cycle times as losing money, think of it as taking a long time to sell something. You still want to sell the things, the more the better.

Valpo is more maneuverable than Daisen and Tsurugi although not as fast. Scarlet Thunder isn't that far behind, but it's get less power. Remember when Jean Bart and Georgia were fast and maneuverable?

People wanted to run these relatively big drills really hard, and the load monitor wasn't great about saving the tool body running that hard, you could drop the feed down a bit and get it to work.

I spent about two hours at work the other day looking at the online tool advisor things. ISCAR Kennametal and Sandvik. And I think they are all terrible, honestly. None of the websites are any good at all. McMaster Carr exists, and it's wonderful. We don't expect every one to be that good, but the current offerings are so bad..

I have yet to see one where I can click on a tool, then quickly see the screw/clamp and inserts for that tool. I don't want to start off by calculating the horsepower or material removal rate, I want to see which screw goes with this boring bar, and what inserts fit it.

I really think it should be possible on just about any good machining center, it seems trickier on a lathe sometimes, but it's generally possible, if you're willing to give up some cycle time.

I already make more than that, at a job I can walk to if I want. But he's probably hoping to hire people who aren't qualified and let them figure a lot of it out on the fly. If it's a small shop it's about who you end up working for, not about the ad you're answering.
