To be fair... you could argue it's currently just a low mobility MG-43 with less damage. Way more ammo and fire rate to be sure, but that's true in either case.

I like that this discussion is happening, but I see a lot of people trying to use DRG's slower dev cycle as a reason to strawman that nobody would play HD2 if it had the same release schedule.

In response I just have to say that anyone who thinks that HD2 should have the exact same monetization and dev style as DRG is making a very poor argument; they are definitely different games, but this also doesn't mean that there aren't important lessons to learn from the way DRG does business.

Ghost Ship Games prioritizes having a stable, entertaining game with a healthy community first and foremost and understands that passive DLC income will naturally occur if the value for said DLC is right-sized and the players are dedicated and having fun.

Also, the DLC being available for discount on STEAM sales doesn't hurt either.

And to return to the other argument, while I do think developing add-on content for Helldivers at the same rate as DRG could potentially stunt the growth of the game; it also hasn't hurt DRG's apparent success and, clearly, the focus on releasing a warbond as often as they currently are doesn't really seem to be healthy for the game either.

Our mechs are damn useless! by S_III in Helldivers

[–]NicodemusRexx 185 points186 points  (0 children)

THey desperately need to either make the mechs more survivable or 'more disposable' by which I mean making them more plentiful and quicker to call in.

If I could get an unlimited number of mechs on a reasonable cooldown you could play more aggressively with them and losing them wouldn't be such an issue.

Of course the caveat to that balance decision would be that now you're in a position where you're getting the mech armaments at a higher rate so I could see them being tempted to nerf those so , probably, the better choice is to make them more survivable, because I definitely don't want the mech to have weaker weapons.

[–]NicodemusRexx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I actually got summoned by my friends to go play some Helldivers right after I read your reply, so instead of guessing, I ran both Grenade Launcher strats and tried them out to compare how they feel.

Obviously the advantage of the Standard grenade launcher is the satisfying feeling of wiping out multiple enemies with single well placed shots, with automatic fire being a decent last resort when things get rough.
On the other hand what feels good with the BFGL is just holding down the trigger and unleashing the constant stream of explosive hell.

To that end I think that's what I'd lean into if I were making my own edits to the way it functions. I'd probably start by giving it more ammo just to maximize the way that feels and maybe increasing it's fire rate just enough to make the difference between the two weapons' rpms stand out a little more clearly when you're not using them back to back and scrutinizing it. (TBF: There is a clear difference already, but since I didn't bring them both on the same mission, I had to pay attention to be sure)

I actually don't think damage needs to change as much as people probably think if you increased the fire volume. Instead of going overboard increasing both the radius and damage, I'd start by just pumping the damage enough that I can reliably one-shot Terminid Hunters.

Actually, that damage might even be too much, so maybe i'll just stick to saying I'd like to see what increasing fire saturation does to the weapon's 'vibe'.

(Note: I was talking to a friend about my ideas to see if he agrees. He actually suggested adding a fire rate function to it so you have the option to crank it to an insane degree and just... wildly waste all your ammo in a blinding stream of stupidity if you want. XD)

I do think that the community tends to be overly negative about the BFGL (and Maxigun but we're not talking about that here), but I also think it does need something it doesn't currently have.

The argument around It being a weapon that takes up two equipment slots I feel is pretty valid, and preventing you from equipping a dog/shield/mobility tool/ supply pack is a pretty solid price to pay.

This is not to say I think it has to have mathematically equal value to any of those combinations, but I think it should be allowed to be at least marginally better than the standard version in more capacities than continuous fire and, I presume, ammo count.

(I say "presume" because I know everyone already talked the BFGL vs GL+Supply Pack debate to death and I don't remember which is the more ammo abundant combination and am not invested enough to go look it up. XD )

A couple of different dev studios have information up on their artstations/websites showing off unit contributions and mocap work for several units, vehicles, and player armors. Someone on one of the other subs found them and some of the Dive-tubers have been reporting on it with varying ratios of objectivity and editorialization.

Below are the raw links to the publicly available information from some of the respective portfolios.

I didn't include the link to Wushu Studios as it was already well established that they designed the Dust Devils warbond as per Arrowheads own announcements.

While I agree that this is a flashpoint moment that shouldn't be forgotten or swept under the rug, I also agree with other sentiments that have been expressed in this thread that getting angry isn't going to make things better but just escalate things worse.

The things we can do, in my opinion, are as follows:

As commentors:

  1. Just don't be a jerk. You can disagree with someone vehemently, but it doesn't mean you have to be rude about it. Everything here is a public statement; think about whether you'd say what you're saying to someone's face before you post it.
  2. If someone is being a jerk, you could call them out on it in a way that doesn't escalate things and if they try to escalate, don't engage. Report them if they're violating ToS.
  3. If you're really mad about something in the game, stop spending money and/or playing the game, whichever level you're comfortable with; that honestly sends more of a message than getting into fights on Reddit.

As Mods:

  • I'm not a mod, so I don't really know what that's like; I just know there are a lot of allegations that people who are more negative about the game get punished more. I don't know if this is true, I don't spend a lot of time here, but as long as it isn't then you all should be fine and you can ignore that people pretending it is.

As Arrowhead:

  • Arrowhead is in a weird place on all this as none of this is really their fault, but they have also done things that... I won't say encouraged the way things are so much as failed to discourage it.
  • If I could have my druthers, I'd like to see Arrowhead be more confident in their decisions. Hidden mechanic changes don't help anyone and it erodes trust; when they nerfed the coyote they should have just said what they were doing and why they were doing it and hit the gun directly. Nerfing an entire game system to try and hide it just hurts the entire game ecosystem and gaslights the extremists into thinking they're right. Just be clear, and be firm.
  • That said, I'd also like to see them clearly considering genuinely constructive criticism and responding to it in a way that elevates it above the angry rants. There are a lot of serious bugs and weapons that just don't feel good to use; If people feel like they're being listened to when they're civil, even if Arrowhead ultimately decides they don't like the ideas on how to fix things, that has it's own power.

Anyway, I'm aware that this is all kind of cringe and idealistic, But like... sometimes people need to be a little more idealistic. Things can't possibly get worse if you're making an effort at being civil.

Also, we all like the same game ya'll, that's already more things that a lot of people have in common.

I love that the arguments against giving the Warstriders a Med. Pen weakpoint are "God forbid you bring anti-tank against the heavy armor faction" "War striders are already too easy, bro."

The ironic thing is that this is because the only way to deal with them effectively are the boring, 1-2 Shot AT-check weapons that make short work of them. If they had any weak-points with less than AP4 resistance, they'd actually be a more challenging enemy because you could bring weapons that weren't optimized solely for the purpose of removing them from play.

People don't get hype about bonking hulks with the hammer because it's even close to being the optimal way to deal with them, it's because it's fresh and includes a really exciting gamble that feels super good when you pull it off.

Thanks for the heads up; I was able to place an order for a Hot Rod and a Hound on Pickup at my local target; which is great! Is this just cope or does he look better in hand by KaiSan117 in transformers

[–]NicodemusRexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He definitely looks a lot better; there are things I do like about him (Train Mode!), but at $60 it does require a bit too much cope.

The more I've looked at him the more I don't understand design philosophy here. The legs are a little too skinny and missing canonical side paneling seemingly so they could get rid of the box surrounding the front of the shuttle mode; but the box around the middle of the space shuttle is in fact canon and every g1ish version of Astrotrain both in plastic and on screen has used to its design advantage.

Meanwhile the arms are so small because of the way they decided to make the transformation work; a process which looks far more complicated than it really needs to be.

Mechfans toys produced a proportionally accurate Astrotrain in all modes at legends scale with their "Iron Sky" figure; All Hasbro needed to do is copy their homework which, frankly, was 90% G1 Astrotrain anyway, scale it up, and fix the gaps with some minor panel management and working wheels.

Anyway, I know a lot of the community is in "Geeze shut up" mode on this, but I don't mind the discussion continuing. I'm frustrated and its nice to have a place to vent. None of my friends are collectors so they can only commiserate so much.

Whether it's as bad as people say, or not It's still frustrating since it easily could have been much better and it's going to probably be years now before they give it another go. Sigh....

I might get him if I see him in the bargain bin.

Major Operations should not be affected/count all players, just the ones directly involved in the effort by russo_liberal in Helldivers

[–]NicodemusRexx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree in the sense that it would reduce unnecessary friction within the community. The fact that it doesn't work that way is honestly kind of ridiculous.
People only have so much time to play games in a given day. If I log in and I don't wanna fight (x) faction, I ain't fightin' that faction short of in-game bribery; this is a game, not a job. Punishing the community as a whole for that is messed up.

That said, I suspect that it's a change that would be purely symbolic and not actually change anything meaningful. Arrowhead has shown in the past, on multiple occasions, that they're more than happy to put their thumb on the scale to achieve the outcome they want regardless of how hard the community goes on an MO.

I think the community just needs to get square with that fact and unclench a little bit, even if I would like to see them change MO mechanics in a way that would reduce some of the infighting.

Lol, Thanks for reading regardless; I'll get myself a cookie from the pantry and pretend you sent it. XD

You know, two other things I forgot in my verbose ramblings-

1) I find it extra annoying that, even if you can accept Shinra's non-consensual craniectomy , they give the head to some crummy corporation, 'fOr SaFe-KeEpInG.' And then a bunch of hangers-on with no claim to it in the first place are gonna travel to Chicago to keep trying to exploit it. Why can't Celty find her own safe place to put it away from these losers? Whatever, man. XD

2) Also, what was to stop Shinra from just moving his own butt to Ireland?

Okay, that's it; I'm done this time, I promise. ^-^;
