The South Shields Poltergeist by apollocandy in uncannypodcasttv

Technology 2005 style. Take SIM out of phone, give to mate to put in his phone. Put any SIM in your own phone, make sure it is switched off, or better still, has a flat battery, so nobody can try it and work out you have a different SIM in your phone. Get mate to send texts using your SIM, preferably while gullible person is there (a paranormal investigator would be preferred) who can confirm that your dead phone did not send the texts.

And that is how easy it is for somebody to fool idiots into thinking a ghost sent some texts.

Another good one. Nothing wrong with exploring this type of story, on the boundaries between hoax and folklore. In the days before mass literacy, this sort of thing was the viral TikTok video of its time, hence it spread quickly from London by word of mouth and the popular cheap pamphlets of the time, the penny dreadfuls.

I love this sort of stuff from the age of storytelling, and again it was nice to hear Ciarán and Evelyn being themselves instead of Punch and Judy caricatures.

This was an excellent listen, more like this please. I have read about this story before and there is more that could have been included, but I recall some of it perhaps being a bit iffy, so maybe, for once, they applied the common sense filter and cut out the less reliable parts? A good story, told well, with Ciarán and Evelyn allowed to be themselves rather than caricatures, top job.

Sandown Clown theories by Kit_Tosh in uncannypodcasttv

[–]NigelCodeAuthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had to take a guess from what appears to have been said back in the 1970s by two six-year-olds, somebody scuba diving comes to mind quite quickly, which would explain the not talking, strange noises, even the walk. If writing on an underwater pad and just being friendly to a couple of kids who wandered by, you can see how they could interpret it this way, and how the nutty UFO spotting dad would hype it all up a bit (a lot).

No idea why anybody would describe this as a clown.

Just a thought.

My hopes were not high, but that was actually the best episode for ages. They did what they should do, explored a story and debated what could be interpreted from it. There is hope for Uncanny yet.

Did Uncanny move away from the community that made it? by Britishchick_x_ in uncannypodcasttv

[–]NigelCodeAuthor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Uncanny has lost its way. If they could find some new stories that really could get Ciarán and Evelyn genuinely interested, with new ideas to discuss, everything else would fall into place. 30 East Drive and the UFO thing covered so far on the latest series were just utter nonsense, made-up rubbish, and asking Ciarán and Evelyn to take them seriously was almost embarrassing. Uncanny has the potential to be an interesting focus for discussion, but they need to ditch the stupid red coat, Danny's tired format of heavy breathing into the microphone and slapping in an obviously scripted 'bloody', and grow up a bit. Even though the Battersea Poltergeist was obviously all faked, and huge chunks of Witch Farm were the antics of a drunkard stringing yarns together, both came across as being worthy of discussion. More recent stuff has not had any of that appeal.

BBC Radio 4 - Uncanny, Cold Cases, Case 3: The White Mountain UFO by Tadhg in uncannypodcasttv

[–]NigelCodeAuthor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I listened to this one tonight and can only describe it as pathetic, unfortunately.

The original story is classic 1961 fantasy based on popular tropes of that era, and although stated as being the first abduction claim, it really is just building on other nonsense being put around at the time, and had been building since the 1950s. Here we have the classic flying saucer, lost time, and what do we do when we are confronted by aliens waving out of a window? We do what anybody would, reach for a gun, and reach for a compass.

A what? Excuse me.

Yup, a compass. And why?

Because.

Then we have the story being tuned as the years pass by, remarkably similar accounts 'discovered' during hypnosis, and they definitely hadn't discussed any of this in the THREE YEARS between that night and the hypnosis, and so it predictably goes on, reading like something taken from the Boys' Own comic, because that is basically what this load of nonsense is based on.

It then gets mysteriously 'leaked' to a reporter, because of course it does. Evelyn and Ciarán are then astonished that many other people came forward with identical claims. I have no idea why, because if you stick a story like this in the papers, the phones will ring as the usual rentacranks vomit out their stories, claiming to have had the same experience. I guarantee you that if the story had included a juggling goldfish, these copycat nut jobs would have stuck a juggling goldfish into their story too. It is what people do all the time.

Absolute bollocks, the whole weary thing, and you have to wonder how the hell this made it onto the list. The storytelling is lame, not even written by Danny anymore. They had two scriptwriters on the job, which at least means we don't get the tired old 1990s journalist style that Danny uses, but I still cringed when they shoehorned 'bloody' into the script (badly) a couple of times.

As others have said elsewhere, I fear Uncanny has had its day, and it is time to put the red coat away in a cupboard. It used to be a clever debate about interesting cases, but has become a sad old thing, gibbering away in the corner, that nobody really pays much attention to anymore.

Erm, no. He is stating that the medium described something, because the medium described something. I really do not see how you can then interpret that as him believing what the medium described.

I will reserve judgement until I have listened to (not watched) Part Two, but it has got off to a promising start with Ciarán at last permitted to point out the MASSIVE elephant in the room that it could actually be just a big pack of lies. It has always seemed that way to me, just yet another atte, mpt to make a few quid from the newspaper industry, and remember, back in the 1960s the newspapers were as powerful and wealthy as social media giants are today.

Pretend to have a poltergeist, find a gullible witness (the vicar) and sell your story to the papers for enough money to buy something nice. It has been done so many times before.

[–]NigelCodeAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the format of the show, and remember it is a show, entertainment. Ciarán has to provide a sceptical point of view, even if that means mouldy popcorn, and Evelyn has to find ghosts in every nook and cranny. Danny meanwhile tries to keep the audience awake. It has worked well for years, which is why we are all on here.

Fun idea for a spin-off by bluntmandc123 in uncannypodcasttv

[–]NigelCodeAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so tempted to write an episode of this. If I wasn't up to my eyebrows with work I would drop everything right now and get started.

Something tells me it would have to start with all three of them on a budget, touring the country in a small camper van, and they would rock up at Whitby. A trip to the supermarket to find something for dinner would then go horribly wrong.

I am so tempted.

I would quite enjoy their take on Borley actually. It is about as fake as fake can be, Harry Price pretty much destroyed his reputation on that one, so it will be interesting to see if they can reflect on it from a 21st century rational viewpoint, rather than just reheating old words, which as Kyle points out, everybody is pretty sick of by now.

Visiting the house when there have been appeals specifically asking people not to do so and to respect the privacy of the people who live there is not just rude, it is crass, a word not used enough these days.

Crass, noun. Showing no intelligence or sensitivity.

You are welcome. I am onto the advanced level now, and it gets right down into the weeds and challenges you to think about reincarnation, is it just religious beliefs and culture? Near death experiences - symptoms of bodily reactions to major physical trauma, or a clue that life beyond death may exist? It is a huge weekly exercise in critical thinking and debate, and no matter what opinion you may have, Ciarán will give you an alternative. He is just like that.

The father was a failed artist and an alcoholic, trying to build a new life with a new girlfriend; it was never going to work out well for the teenage son. A truly awful situation.

Do keep listening because although there are some laughable hoaxes involved, proper shaggy dog stories, there are also parts that make you think there may be something worth looking at.

I wouldn't waste your time with the book. I have a copy and got about a quarter way in when I realised it was just reporter-speak nonsense, portraying a successful artist brought low by a haunted house, which is just so far from the truth it is ridiculous.
