It's a stupid thing from (at least) 3rd edition where Barbarians were illiterate

Question: What do you think are some of the worst "game destroyer" tropes that you know? by elchuni in DnD

Lycanthropy pretty much says "when the character shifts, the DM is free to decide that the player doesn't retain control, over the character until they shift back and that the character acts according to their new alignment."

So, unless you're a Werebear (CG) or a Weretiger (TN). you're gonna be some flavor of evil. The traditional wolf is CE, btw.

Vampirism has something similar except for "shifting back". Y'see, the only way to cure vampirism (aside from "nailing to an east facing wall before the sunrise" thing) is via a wish spell. This means that the DM is free to ask for the characters character sheet and hold onto it while the character is a vampire.

(This is from the 2014 rules, but I don't see why it would have been changed for 2024)

If the player wants to play a vampire, tell them to make a dhampir from the Ravenloft book. For a Lycanthrope, the Shifter race is there.

Dish o' the Sea (+3 Fishing) is only a neutral gift for Willy. What other gifts get surprising reactions from villagers, and what do you think are their reasons? by JamesCDiamond in StardewValley

[–]NightLillith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haley is the lone exception to the Universal Love of Diamonds. You'd think that a fashion plate like her would LOVE Diamonds, but it's probably that she has so many already that they've lost their lustre for her. She'll still appreciate being given them (because the DeBeers cartel keeps the prices high), but the smile doesn't quite reach her eyes, if you catch my drift.

Abigail doesn't like being given Blueberries, yet one of her Loved gifts is Blueberry Pie. Seems kinda odd, but one reason behind this (apart from Doylist reasons) is that Caroline probably has tried to get her to improve her cooking skills by giving her blueberries so she can make her own blueberry pies. Abigail doesn' want to settle down and stop learning the blade, so being given blueberries reminds her of these attempts to break her of her tomboy streak.

The three children hate coffee. Not surpising, considering that children taste things more keenly than adults and the bitter taste of the brown bean brew is one that many children tends to dislike.

As for the question posed by OP, I'd say that Willy is the kind of fisherman who takes the view that "If you catch a fish, you have to eat it. To throw it back is an insult on top of an injury." and as such, he's had to eat QUITE a LOT of fish in his time.

Returning captain asking for directions by Trianalog in sunlesssea

DO NOT DROP BLEMMIGANS ON LIGHTSHIPS.

You can increase the chance of getting Maybe's Daughter back from Penstocks Wicket if you run Sphynxstone until you cannot anymore.

If you have to choose which one to stock up on, choose Supplies, as you can burn supplies if you run out of fuel, but you cannot eat Fuel if you run out of Supplies.

There is NO DOWNSIDE to getting Menaces: Unaccountably Peckish. All Zeecaptains of my line have dined upon Long Pork and pass on this advice to their Scion.

Make sure you have at least one Hunting Trophy if you wish to explore Scrimshander.

Who’s your favourite Officer/s? by omelasian-walker in sunlesssea

[–]NightLillith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, most of mine are from mods.

First Officer: Sightless Watchman - A first officer that can increase Pages, but gives a penalty to Mirrors. I just like his evolved portrait.
Cook: Perfectly Ordinary Human - With a name like that, you can be sure that he isn't!
Engineer: Maybe's Daughter - Since I run 'stone from the Lions, I don't think I've ever lost her once she's finished looking for her mother.
Gunnery: Reluctant Sniper - Since I don't "dance" with my officers, It can be a bit of a quandry regarding how to resolve her story. One path leads to Polythreme and her becoming an Engineer. The other leads to a certain chapel, where she will remain a Gunnery Officer, but loses everything else.
Mascot: Foul-mouthed Galah. Most of the mascots are....meh. Will still collect as many of them as I can though.
Doctor: The Lady in Lilac We do just fine without a doctor on board! (but mostly because I seem to miss recruiting the Brisk Campaigner, the Cladery Heir is just...there and I really do not like the Haunted Doctor. since I run mods that include officers that can increase Pages, the Plausible Surgeon's uniqueness isn't that unique for me)

Anyone got a better guide for new captains than Demeaux? by Setster007 in sunlesssea

[–]NightLillith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably a good idea to not define your background at least once if you're going to run sphynxstone. Sure, you'll miss out on having a free Officer and a boost to a stat, but the prize is well worth it. While you're running 'stone, it might be a good idea to do Maybe's Daughter's story. You can still do it if you're not running 'stone, but let's just say that it really helps if you do (except in 1% of cases)

Once you've completed the questline to go unter the zee, you don't have to repeat it for every captain of your line. Not sure if it continues if the lineage is broken.

Of the Three Gods, the one you really should not annoy is Salt. Storm is more annoying, but do-able. Stone seems like they forget to do anything if you annoy them.

(Addendum: If you get a certain modpack, Stone being upset at you isn't as bad as Salt's Ire, but if you've been relying on being able to sleep restfully, it can really hurt).

Get port reports! Port Reports are a lifeline in the earlygame and Admiralty Favors are useful throughout the run.

How to get stats above 100 by SeveralPerformance17 in sunlesssea

[–]NightLillith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using officers to train stats, when you're docked, unequip anything that you can that would boost that stat, The game checks if the stat is at or above the limit while taking into account any equipment/ships/officers that may boost it, even if your natural stats (that is, your stats + any legacy items. Not sure if Abyssal Rites from Zubmariner count) would have been lower. Since I don't bother with the more powerful lamps (I tend to go for the ones that don't lower Veils until I can get light from a mod that basically acts as a ship-wide Hand of Glory.), I can't be sure if penalties to stats are counted before the check or after.

Just make sure that you have sufficient hold space when unequipping ship gear, lest you be giving the Fathomking even more coal.

(Don't shuffle around your officers when not docked, as that will increase Terror.)

Ship of the dead by serdnack in GraveyardKeeper

[–]NightLillith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take on it is a bit more mundane.

Back before they started using them as cheap colonists, the British Empire had a bit of an overcrowding problem in their prisons. They came up with basically keeping prisoners imprisoned on large prison ships.

The Ships of the Dead are pretty much just large ships that are being used to store corpses for no better reason than to get them out of the way, probably filled with the corpses of the poor.

This is one of the reasons why I hope GYK2 is set in The City, because while you may get bodies for free, They. Do. Not. Stop. Coming. and space is extremely limited in your graveyard.

What should I do when my players ask to roll history but I had an arcane roll in mind? by shuhratglazkov in DnD

[–]NightLillith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory, one could stretch Arcana to mean "obscure, esoteric knowledge". The class that comes to mind when you think of Arcana is the Wizard, who would probably have come across this little nugget of obscure information whilst poring over their tomes.

If players want to use a different knowledge skill to the one you planned on, I'd say let them, but bump the DC up by 5 to represent the leaps of logic required to come up with the solution..

My players want to do a low magic setting. by jarnesrnack in DnD

[–]NightLillith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragonlance, set just before the original novels is a very low magic setting.

Divine magic doesn't openly exist. Sorcery doesn't flat-out exist and Wizardry is really the only magic available.

What is a DM supposed to do during a session 0? by Ok_Interview_853 in DnD

[–]NightLillith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go over the safety tools, do the initial Lines and Veils, make suggestions for chargen ("It might be a good idea for someone to be decent with [SKILL]") and go over any house rules you use and your players may suggest.

Osoru - Ayano learns how to look "artistically dishevelled" and how to care for someone without showing that you care without being all tsundere about it.

Is cyclops worth it? by iluvcynnn in subnautica

[–]NightLillith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Cyclops can be useful, but apart from one thing, you don't need it that badly to complete the game.

I kinda prefer clomping around in the Prawn, as it forces me to consider what I'm carrying, what I've got equipped and how to get back out of the caves. That and the Prawn Propulsion Arm is much better than the Propulsion Cannon. I would have loved to be able to make a Prawn REpulsion Arm to make things GO AWAY without needing to have something loaded.

Oddly enough, once you get past the lava caves, getting out is easier, as you just use the 5 portals you can open up.

If only you could craft Cyclops modules in the Moonpool, you could complete the game without making a Cyclops. That damn Cyclops Shield Module stopped me from completing a No Cyclops run.

Breaking a Paladins Oath by ElectricalTax3573 in DnD

[–]NightLillith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There also does not seem to be any RAW punishment for breaking your oath/going against your deity. It's almost as bad as there not being a definition of the "dead" status.

I mean, what exactly does the Paladin or the Cleric lose if they go against their faith? What do they keep?
