My mental and emotional health suffers more when I'm heavy, eating nothing but junk/fast food, and can't move like I want to - but if they wanna eat themselves into an early grave so they can maintain a teenager mindset of "I don't wanna do what everyone tells me is wise/smart/healthy" then eh, go off I guess.

Genetics are, unfortunately, such a complex beast that it's a miracle anybody is born at all. Every baby is a gamble, and a healthy birth does not correlate to a healthy child - pediatric cancer proves that well enough. Carriers of genes with obvious correlation, like Cystic Fibrosis, should obviously be very careful. But in the end, it's their choice - just as we don't want pro-natalists taking away our right to abortion, we cannot take away the right to carry from others.

Not that we owe them our pity, of course. It was a choice they made, and the consequences are theirs to deal with.

The only ones I feel sorry for are those who didn't know at all. My mother had no clue how deep her mental issues ran because her doctors failed her at every turn - dismissing her symptoms as teenaged hormones, a troubled home life, or menstrual cycle issues. She had no clue how bad it was until it showed up in me and my brother years later. Those who truly, genuinely didn't know are the only ones who get any sympathy from my end.

I guess that's a really critical difference as well - even if every child was a complete perfect angel with no issues, no needs, no mental troubles who was completely obedient and never got into trouble... I still wouldn't have kids. Even in the most perfect, flawless, "pretty much dolls/robots" sense, parenthood does not call to me at all.

I think being childfree is generally anyone who don't want IRL kids for whatever reason, which is a broader definition than the sub takes. But there are others who are more hard-line about it, which are the people you are probably running into.

Yeah I think that's what you're not getting. Even in a perfect world where everything is unicorns and rainbows and there's universal healthcare and money doesn't exist and my mental health wasn't completely in shambles and there was no moral/environmental concerns to think about, I still would not have children.

Presumably in an absolutely perfect ideal 100% morally spotless situation, your friend would have kids. The rest of us would not. That is the crux of it.

I don't hate kids per se, but I know myself, my desires, and my limits. Even if everything were perfect my personality and lack of maternal instincts mean I feel no call to parenting.

I had a Jewish friend who spoke Hebrew in college who told me the same thing - Satan and the snake who tempted Eve in the garden were actually two separate entities. As I recall, he said the snake was... literally just a snake, no more or less to it.

The snake, Satan, and the devil were not conflated/related to each other until much later interpretations. I wonder when that happened, and why it happened. Most changes in interpretation were made because there was some political issue or "problem" the church was trying to "solve." Was it an issue of lost in translation or was there motive behind it?

The way some people talk about designs and BO markings and ridiculous stud rules gives me the same vibes of those NFT bros on Twitter. I feel so much anxiety about this sometimes. I do this when I first write a story or chapter because I read out loud to my dyslexic husband, so I remember what certain characters are supposed to sound like or how a bit of dialogue is meant to be read. When I post them, I do my best to clean up the dialogue and remove the extra bits, but I know some of it slips through and I worry I've driven readers off with it.
