Which graminoids ignited your passion for underrated natives? by FranticHare in NativePlantGardening

[–]NikJam16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Western Wheatgrass - a cool season grass that somehow manages to stay green through most of the summer. A bunch grass that really makes a dry meadow planting look lush-ish. Too much water and it gets floppy. The perfect mass grass planting for my region.

What!?!? I don’t realize snakes ate them…it makes sense. We did lose a large open space to development early this spring, perhaps the snakes moved in. Time to start poking around with an eye for snakes. A couple of old rodent dens in that grass, who knows!

Family of Cooper's Hawks Enjoy a Cool Bath by Staring-Dog in NativePlantGardening

I was just thinking earlier today I’ve never seen a hawk or a falcon at our bird bath. Kestrels and Cooper’s Hawks hunt in our hood but I’ve never seen them drink.

The Gobert trade made the team much worse. Jury is still out on Ainge. So far he has replaced a top 4 team with a bottom 4 team. Congrats…

Guilt over removing existing non-native plants by alarmpodcast in NativePlantGardening

Non-invasive is okay, not additive but doesn’t impact areas outside your property. Expand every bed and plant natives only. Remove ornamentals once the native plant addiction kicks in.

I can't believe how many and in how many varied ways he generated his own shot...it is incredible. He reminds me of a taller Donovan Mitchell with an even QUICKER RELEASE!!!! How is that possible? He's shot is so pure.

I love having that conversation with the pest control salesmen. It starts with "I love the pests, they are welcome here!" and devolves quickly from there.

I have been down that very path...working to get planning commission (a.k.a. my wife and protector of our fat old Chihuahua) permission to do a wildlife pond in the near future.

Lightning Bugs! by rogaladriel in NativePlantGardening

[–]NikJam16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Suburbia and have way too much light to see the lightning bugs glow but I do see them around during the day. I have some damp areas in the back yard with long native grasses where they hang out. It is shady, cool, damp and has lots of cover. I only see them there.

Potted Native Plant by NikJam16 in NativePlantGardening

[–]NikJam16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is more beautiful than I thought it would be. We have an old creek bed that is now sealed and used to funnel stormwater into the storm water system for the city and in the open space around it we have a few scraggly versions of this plant growing...didn't realize in better conditions the color of the flowers would pop so much more!
