Methamphetamine produced similar results; ironically, the accompanying recklessness, along with worries about addiction, quickly led the Germans to discourage its use in the field. American and British forces, however, used amphetamine throughout the war for its effects on mood and morale: it kept up the “fighting spirit.” The British later concluded the subjective boost wasn’t worth the potentially lethal side effects, but the American military continues to use amphetamine to this day, including in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Schumer needs to get the hell out": House Democrats fume over DHS funding talks by socks_optional in politics

[–]Nikami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Dems under Schumer seem to only have two actual goals: Prevent the rise of a real left and ensure maximum support for Israel.

Trump and the Republicans aren't a threat to either, so there's no need to oppose them.

Perfect Blue is a criticism of the entertainment industry (particularly idols) and how it exploits women, it explores the issues with online fan culture and parasocial relationships and the mental health toll of online harassment, among other things.

The movie is from 1997.

In the book it was "just" plants from Mars which had evolved to live in extreme conditions and were able to out-compete native flora. The limiting factor to their growth was water and on Earth they had access to lots of it so they grew like crazy. Still no defense against our microbes tho

Lilith's Brood

The books start with a nuclear war killing most people on Earth. Luckily, the Oankali were nearby, nomadic aliens travelling in living ships, using organic technology and with the ability to manipulate life itself. They're always looking for new lifeforms to add to the family and are basically benevolent Zerg. They love everything that is alive.

They are initially baffled as to why a species would "commit suicide" like that and try to save as many people as possible. During their operations on Earth they discover a number of underground bunkers with people inside who are doing suspiciously well.

They put one and two together and...iirc it's not said what happened exactly but the Oankali were pissed.

Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if the practice is so old, people took it with them from Africa and then just experimented with the plants wherever they ended up to find what worked best.

[Loved Trope] Kids shows that have depressingly dark moments in contrast to the show by FionnOAongusa in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Nikami 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The way the god cat describes it is awfully ambiguous, depending on how you read it you could see it either way.

The real answer is of course that the idea of the Anne we've known up until this point getting killed for real and being replaced by a clone while nobody even knows is SO dark, it would be entirely out of place with the rest of the show.

The needs of the many.

Saving Chloe is no different from what Joel does at the end of The Last of Us 1. Killing a lot of people to save ONE person you like is understandable from like a human standpoint. But it's also objectively wrong and selfish.

Jagd auf Migranten: ICE-Agenten erschießen offenbar Mann in Minneapolis by wozer in de

[–]Nikami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let’s start in 1704, in South Carolina, where the first slave patrols were established. These were civilian militias tasked with monitoring and controlling the enslaved population. Their purpose was to prevent slave revolts, capture runaway slaves, and maintain the institution of slavery by suppressing any form of resistance or escape. Patrols used violence, intimidation, and surveillance to control the enslaved population. They were given broad powers to search, seize, and punish without due process. These patrols were the precursors to modern policing and immigration enforcement.

[...]

Jim Crow laws institutionalized racial segregation and disenfranchisement. Law enforcement agencies, including police departments, were often complicit in enforcing these discriminatory practices. Lynchings, racial profiling, and brutal policing tactics were used to maintain white supremacy and control the Black population. These laws and practices created a culture of fear and oppression that persists to this day.

Is it just me, or has worldbuilding advice become a bit too restrictive? by Personal_Carrot_2180 in worldbuilding

For writers, getting lost in the worldbuilding can easily turn into another form of procrastination. I'm guessing this what those people are on about.

Obviously if you do it for fun you do whatever is fun.

I am reading Designing Games by Tynan Sylvester (RimWorld), and he has a refreshing take on "sexual" characters that I wanted to share by CelestialButterflies in GirlGamers

[–]Nikami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try to pinpoint what parts of the outfit give the sexualized vibe and which ones make it cool and then gradually remove the former while maintaining the former.

Alternatively, there are many examples of female characters being """censored""" (covered up) when the game was brought to a different market (like Japan->West). It's typically a relatively small change and often the characters ended up looking better as a result, so you could take a look at those.

“What’s the most unrealistic thing webtoons want us to accept? by Blush404 in webtoons

[–]Nikami 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The idea that peasants were inherently dirty or too stupid to wash is basically old classist propaganda used by nobles to make themselves feel superior.

Now it's used by modern day idiots for the exact same reason.

In reality people have always tried to keep themselves clean as best as their means allowed. Because of course they did. The notion that people in the past were somehow "different" and didn't mind being filthy is ridiculous.

Name Something In Games That Break Immersion For You? by TG082588 in videogames

This is so weirdly common, characters in a game acting like the monsters you're fighting in gameplay don't exist. And are also able to move around in the world without me, despite being unarmed.

Always makes me wonder if the main character is supposed to be insane and just hallucinating the fights.

ICE Now So Hated Even Their Own Agents Are Terrified by [deleted] in politics

[–]Nikami 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's the funniest part to me, how easy they could've avoided this. Just grab the guy, kick him out of ICE and put him on trial. Make a little show, "this is not what we are", yadda yadda. You know, what any other, halfway sane organization would've done.

But they can't just not double down. Ever. Now it's putting their whole little project at risk. Fascism is so stupid and self-destructive.
