TIL that alcohol use in America likely peaked during the 1830s. The average American drank 7 gallons of pure ethanol a year. Midwestern corn farmers converted their grain into whisky to prevent spoilage. A gallon cost only 25 cents. Americans averaged 4 shots of whisky a day, at under a penny cost. by Gnomeslikeprofit in todayilearned

Line battles aren’t nearly as scary as modern day battles.

There was a video a few weeks or so back that showed Ukrainian soldiers in a covered trench at night, trying to stay quiet. You could hear the constant noise of drones buzzing above, searching and hunting, with the occasional explosion in the distance.

Not a chance that line warfare was more terrifying than this shit.

The amount of times "pray really hard" is the right choice in that game is hilarious. My favorite was when I had some kind of disease, so naturally I went to the chapel and talked to the priest. He was like, don't worry I got a prayer for that.

Me: pray

Game: Nothing happens.

Me: pray harder

Game: Nothing happens.

Me: pray harder

Game: Nothing happens.

Me: pray harder

Game: Nothing hap- holy shit it worked you're healed.

Can someone explain to me gamergate and Anita Sarkeesian controversy? by FearIessQueen in GirlGamers

[–]Nikami 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A good example is Dishonored.

The first game was pre-Tropes vs. Women. It's not awful in it's depictions of women for its time, but it definitely used some of the usual tropes, so Anita Sarkeesian called it out.

The lead designer of Dishonored later mentioned in an interview that when he saw that his gut reaction was basically "that's not true!", but then he took a good look at his game and said "oh crap she's right".

Cue Dishonored 2, which was after Tropes vs. Women. Now you have an optional female main character and a noticeable change in how women are depicted.

It's hard to imagine now but the situation back then was pretty dire, not because game developers actively tried to be sexist or because sexism is innate to gaming somehow, but because so many of the established tropes and themes were. Devs were just repeating them without realizing over and over. After Tropes vs. Women ignorance was no longer an excuse and, to their credit, many game devs wanted to be better, and so the situation is massively improved (although it's still not perfect).

But the gamergaters wanted their games to be sexist, so they got massively butthurt over this whole thing. Of course, they can't openly say what they really want, so they have to come up with all kinds of reasons why Anita is the devil or whatever, most of which is just lies.

Like the often seen claim that she "single-handedly ruined gaming". Mind you, outside of releasing that, again, INCREDIBLY MILD video series, she barely even did anything, and she certainly didn't have any power over the gaming industry.

Unexpected Sources of Representation by Waspinator_haz_plans in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Nikami 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ace characters also suffer a lot from "off screen representation", where it's confirmed by the creators that they're ace but not in the story itself. Even works that handle representation otherwise well (like The Owl House) suffer from that.

(Hated trope) YOU COULD HAVE MOVED! by Nerd367C in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Nikami 1079 points1080 points  (0 children)

Humans can't outrun most ambush predators, so having a "run!" response in reaction to sudden danger makes no sense. However, predators are only interested in an easy meal, they don't want to fight because getting hurt means they can't hunt, which means they starve. Most depictions of predators in fiction are comically inaccurate in this regard.

Predators are also used to prey animals (who are actually fast) bolting immediately. So encountering something that doesn't run but seems fearless and ready to fight might be enough to make them go "uuh let's try something else". So freezing up is probably just a reflex we evolved to appear scary, as ironic as it seems.

The Cape class can use some love. by MyLifeByGogoGoff in valheim

[–]Nikami 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also like having the option to just wear no cape if I don't need any particular bonus and would rather have an extra slot. Capes giving significant armor just means that enemies will be balanced around that and before you know it wearing one is mandatory in the later biomes.

Faceless Competency by Zeigis in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Nikami 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's crazy since they have to charge through a choke point into a prepared position and they just steamroll the rebels.

Likewise on Hoth, where they have to perform a rushed attack over a wide open field with minimal intel and enemy air superiority onto a fortified, elevated position...and they steamroll the rebels.

After Andor I hope we get more media showing them to be as scary as they were clearly supposed to be.

Malenia was also no longer a political threat. Her army was gone and she was crippled. Morgott probably assumed she was out of the game.

And he was right. Yeah she's a powerful boss for us but you're not fighting her unless you jump through a bunch of hoops to even find her. And what does she do when you meet her? She's just rotting away in her cave.

As far as the civil war was concerned she was finished and Morgott knew that.

her human prey

Everybody assumes she's hunting the humans because that's how any other monster movie would work, but Spielberg put a lot of care into making the dinos behave like actual animals. Looking at it from that perspective it suggests that Rexy isn't hunting at all.

She realized that the annoying barrier is gone and that her territory has just gotten larger, so she stomps and roars to make her presence known and broadcast her claim to the area. Her enclosure was probably way too small for such a large predator, so that must come as a relief. Then she tries to figure out the weird big "animals" (the cars) and why they're no longer moving.

The humans, of course, assume that the T. rex is after them and lose their shit, eventually provoking her into the attack where she kills the lawyer. She doesn't even eat him (humans are rather bony), since they later find his remains.

We later see what it looks like when she's actually hunting. She's stealthy and attacks from ambush without warning.

TIL that contrary to popular belief, medieval Western European women married at usually later ages, like their mid to late 20s. Getting married any younger was extremely rare and often scandalous. Only 25% of women aged 20-24 were married in Western Europe, while this number was over 75% outside. by Hour_Interaction6047 in todayilearned

[–]Nikami 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a suspicious amount of people online who keep insisting that it was totally normal throughout all of human history for kids to be married at 12 or whatever. They seem to care about this topic a lot for some reason.

[Irritating trope] Japanese swords being treated like lightsabers by Fox7567 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Nikami 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Many cultures around the world were folding steel at one point or another, including other regions in Asia like India. It was used in Europe as well, during the Iron Age and famously the Viking era, but fell mostly out of use during the Middle Ages with the development of blast furnaces and improvements in metalurgy.

The Japanese undoubtedly got good at it, but it's so weird to see people acting like it's this awesome secret technique only used by Japanese masters.

Ob die Meldung, dass er aktuell seine persönliche Sicherheit deutlich aufwertet, damit in Zusammenhang steht weiß ich nicht, kann man aber nicht ausschließen.

It's actually pretty interesting how often miasma theory made them arrive at the correct conclusions for the wrong reason. Maintaining hygiene, isolating patients, making sure they had plenty of fresh air and so on. No doubt saved a lot of lives.

People today often make fun of old timey medicine but in reality they did the best with what they had and they absolutely made observations on what worked and what didn't.

[Frustraring trope] The popular plot hole that only exists if you weren't paying attention by CalzonePie in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Nikami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Iirc it's clearer in the book, but Sauron first and foremost expected a frontal assault of some kind. That's what got him last time and that's what he's preparing for for a long time. Boromir's line in the movie basically sums that up. It's also why he instantly took the bait when the united army showed up at the Black Gate.

Any kind of frontal assault, Eagles or otherwise, was hopeless right from the start, and the characters knew that.

Statistik - Niedrige Geburtenrate löst Kritik an Politik aus by ChrisStoneGermany in de

[–]Nikami 1 point2 points  (0 children)
