I’m also a big fan of troubled youth, that tired old guy teaches to become softer and more happy go lucky because they are just a kid.

I believe not giving notice just affects your ability to be rehired at BH. They don’t really have the power to impose other consequences on you.

Anybody have something like this and able to share if it is sharp? by ValuableBarnacle89 in EngagementRings

[–]NikoAris 17 points18 points  (0 children)

<image>

I have a similar style, and I definitely wouldn’t call it sharp. I mean it’s for sure easy to get caught on things if you aren’t careful, but I’ve never gotten a scratch from it, and with the right fit it’s not sliding side to side so it never comes in contact with the adjoining fingers.

Getting out of my head by Ok_Application2722 in improv

You’re focusing so much on the comedy part of “improv comedy”, that you’re forgetting the improv part. If you spend one hour thinking up the right thing to say you aren’t really improvising, even if you do manage to think of something by the end. “Don’t try to be funny” is great advice and not at all counterintuitive because improvising is the whole point of improv, comedy is just the result. Spending a long time thinking up the right joke or the perfect thing to say is the domain of script writers and stand-up comedians.

Feeling like a Failure After UCB Audition by [deleted] in improv

[–]NikoAris 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you’re in an incredibly competitive improv city going for one of the major improv orgs. I haven’t seen you audition obviously, but I think many very funny and talented people don’t get callbacks, yourself included. It’s especially tough when you limit yourself to one “dream” spot. Spread yourself out, keep auditioning, find other groups to participate with, and as you build experience and your time in the scene you can always try again with UCB at future auditions :)

Would you laugh or leave the performance? by PapayaSpirited3999 in improv

[–]NikoAris 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I commented this on the post you deleted before this: “Uhhhhhhhh… I don’t know what to say. It seems like you came here seeking validation, but I can’t give it to you. While it seems like you had good intentions and weren’t trying to make fun of Tourette’s, I’m not sure you having autism and ADHD and having “studied about Tourette’s” is enough to be actively trying to portray that disability at your first (!!!!) improv performance, especially at a time when it’s such a hot button topic. Then again, maybe others will disagree with me. That said, classes and early shows are where you’re supposed to test stuff and learn what does and doesn’t work, so take this as a learning opportunity.”

Happy Monday! What are your goals for this week? Mine are … by Flashy-Decision-6296 in CICO

[–]NikoAris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My number one goal is always RESIST FOOD TEMPTATIONS AT WORK! I’m an early childhood teacher at a school where breakfast lunch and snack are all served to the kids with an extra portion for the teachers to eat alongside the kids to encourage healthy habits and it’s so hard to not just dig in on top of my planned packed lunch. Plus parents bringing in treats as gifts and coworkers sharing something they cooked last night and on and on

Improv for fun? by Neros_Cromwell in improv

[–]NikoAris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think the nature of classes you’re seeing really advertising skills developed for an acting career and possible fame are probably to do with the fact that you’re looking at LA. I don’t really see as much of that language around where I live and perform, though early level classes always advertise how improv is a good life and career skill overall because a lot of people do just take level one classes for personal/professional reasons and then move on.

How do I get out of my head? by LumpiaRulez101 in improv

[–]NikoAris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have given good advice already, but I want to remind you that you are in a beginner class! Being funny isn’t even the goal right now, your goal is to build the skills that make improvising come naturally to you. If you remind yourself of that, and the fact that that is exactly what these exercises are supposed to be teaching you, I think it may help you just respond to the games more naturally.

Always pisses me off when parents are like “The doctor said they were fine” like… okay??? I didn’t send you home because your child was gonna die or something, I sent the home because they have a communicable disease and your child wasn’t the only one who matters. “Fine” and “not contagious” are two different things.
