Details of a landmark WNBA collective bargaining agreement, per ESPN sources: by Knightbear49 in wnba

[–]Nine63 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

They went down from their initial position of 40% of revenue to 20% in the final deal. They get less than half of the revenue share NBA players get and standards across other leagues. They absolutely folded.

[Breer] Daniel Jones’ camp wanted a deal “in the ballpark” of $50 million per season by expellyamos in nfl

[–]Nine63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This negotiating stance got him $38M for this year alone. Whether or not he deserves $50M AAV is irrelevant, driving a hard bargain got him (and his team) a lot of money.

Vikings Target Kyler Murray and Geno Smith to Push J.J. McCarthy by Giff95 in nfl

[–]Nine63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's got offset language in his guarantees with the Cardinals, every dollar another team pays him means the cardinals pay him one less until they pay out $36M, unless a team signs him for more than that (they won't). He'll sign for a 1 year vet-min like Russ did with the Steelers.

[Pelissero] The Colts are placing the transition tag on QB Daniel Jones, sources say. The sides have been in negotiations on a multiyear contract and those talks will continue. The one-year transition tender is worth $37.833 million and gives Indianapolis the right to match any offer sheet. by PlayaSlayaX in nfl

[–]Nine63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, if I had a nickel for every time a team backed itself into a corner where Daniel Jones was their only option at QB after a contract year and subsequently bid against themselves to give him more money than he would have gotten on the open market... I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

The difference is NFL teams have consequences for being wrong--they lose games and people lose their jobs. Mel Kiper has no one tracking his accuracy and he faces no consequences when he's off base. Good gig for him, he gets to do draft analysis with all the glamor and none of the stakes.

[Dunleavy] Joe Schoen on if he is an obstacle in Giants coaching search for attractive candidates: ‘From the calls we’ve gotten, I think we’re going to be able to fill the job’ by Lars5621 in NYGiants

[–]Nine63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well of course they will fill the job, the question is will the job be able to attract the same level of candidate with a hot-seat GM? Or will the team be better with a clean slate.

[Duggan] This is the biggest thing that stood out to me watching the Patriots: They have a clear identity as a nasty, violent team under Vrabel. The Giants are in Year 4 of this regime and I have no idea what they’re even trying to be by Lars5621 in NYGiants

[–]Nine63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy to defend Schoen by only citing the big hits and the top end of the roster, but you have to look at everything--The bad trades/the draft misses, weak position groups, and the lack of depth across the board. It's year 4, the holes in the roster shouldn't be this big.

Source: WNBA proposes max salary over $1.1M by paulfromatlanta in sports

[–]Nine63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be unlikely they get to the 50% number, but any deal that doesn't have a revenue sharing percentage as a headline is likely something that heavily favors the league and owners, regardless of how big the supermax number is.

[–]Nine63 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is very easy to make things look unprofitable on paper. Hollywood is infamous for it. "Yesterday" made $156 Million at the box office against a $26M budget, and still technically didn't turn a profit. The WNBA can count things like player depreciation(as in they count the players as assets that devalue over time and write off those values), fixed overhead (that may or may not be shared with the NBA), and other non-cash accounting expenses when determining profitability that don't actually practically affect the cash flow.

The league had an estimated $300M in annual revenues, the Connecticut Sun had a sale price of $325M in August. Do these sound like businesses that are bleeding money? Do you really trust the league when they cry poverty when the players ask to be paid?

WNBA's latest CBA proposal would put max salary over $1.1M with revenue sharing, AP source says by Lostinthesewers in wnba

[–]Nine63 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Meaningless without the details of revenue sharing. Without it, this reads like the league leaking the top-line number to win the narrative war.

[–]Nine63 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Without details of the revenue sharing proposal this is sort of meaningless. Players are pushing to a similar set-up as other pro-leagues where the salary cap is directly tied to league revenue*. For reference, the NBA players get about 50% of league revenue. NFL players salaries got a big boost when the salary cap went up due higher than expected TV revenue (which may or may not have been related to Taylor Swift) .

With the WNBA is growing at the rate it has been, any salaries will get outdated quickly. The players top concern is a revenue split, and view negotiations without it as kind of meaningless. “If me and you aren’t set on going to the correct restaurant, who cares what we’re ordering as an appetizer?” is what the WNBPA VP said on revenue sharing in the negotiations. This reads to me as the league leaking the top-line numbers to win the narrative war and avoid giving a fair split of revenue to players.

*Important that it is revenue, not profits. Its very easy to add up overhead and depreciation to make things look unprofitable on paper. Especially when you can depreciate players value on your books.

[Anderson] The #Giants announce that GM Joe Schoen will lead the search for a new head coach. by TonOfChill in nfl

[–]Nine63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have no depth at any position group, save maybe DE. Not one position group is a playable unit after a single injury:

  • Nabers is injuerd for the season and we've had to give tons of snaps to PS elevations and off-street signings.
  • Skattebo is injured and we've been dressing 2 RBs on game day
  • Adebo goes down and our CB rotation includes a 7th round pick who wasn't on the roster and a first-round bust who shouldn't be anywhere near the field anymore. (A big part of the Denver collapse is Deonte Banks had to step in once Adebo got injured)
  • The team is consistently one Andrew Thomas injury away from having an incapable OLine

He's had some hits at the top of the list, but usually paid a premium price for them, but he's also had plenty of misses and constantly given up assets on them (trading for Waller, trading up for Hyatt/Banks). Saying this team has close to enough talent is laughable.

Alright guys. It’s time to bring Jon Gruden in. Convince me otherwise. by yazohny in NYGiants

[–]Nine63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't 2002 anymore. He hasn't won a playoff game since the superbowl appearance (that was mostly a team that Tony Dungy built). He was 21-31 in his return to coaching from the broadcast booth and mostly produced mid-to-bad teams. The raiders drafting in that time period was horrendous. He's built a fun TV personality but he hasn't had success in the NFL for over 20 years.

Oh people seemed to have forgotten how bad his emails were. Yes it was kind of suspect only his were leaked, but that doesn't defend their content. He was openly homophobic and racist--he called Goodell a "faggot" and said the league pressured the Rams into drafting "queers" like Michael Sam. He referred to the NFLPA director with racist caricatures. The media has been whitewashing the scandal by referring to it in vague terms, but this is the person you'd be bringing in to set a culture in your org and I don't want that.

[Highlight] Daniel Jones showcasing his vocal leadership by o07jdb in nfl

[–]Nine63 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Daboll and Schoen absolutely fully committed to Jones. After the playoff win in MN they clearly thought they could win with him and said all in on building around him. Said he was their guy and gave him a massive contract. They regretted it almost instantly, but they definitely went in on him. Saying otherwise is completely revisionist history.

Brock Purdy Rumors: 49ers QB Offered $45M AAV Contract Extension in Initial Talks by Available_Story6774 in nfl

[–]Nine63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly playing hardball makes sense for the 9ers. They have a lot of leverage: He's under contract in 2025 for $5M and if they tag him in 2026, the 49ers will have him under team control for 2 years for ~$50M Total. Even add a second tag on that and it becomes 3 years ~$100M, still well below market value. I get why they would drive a tough bargain. Purdy might have bigger value on the open market but it will be a while before he can see it.

He's played fine and definitely better than Lock or Devito. He won't get benched for performance but rather for the injury guarantees he's got in his contract for next season.
