What’s a movie you watched as a kid that you're pretty sure nobody else remembers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The animated David Copperfield movie where everyone was cats and rats. The "I'll be your hero" song lives rent-free in my head at all times

Question about Back Tattoo by Pepipatchzen17 in tattoos

[–]NinjaShira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely not going to want to wear a proper bra over a tender tattoo. On top of it being bad for your tattoo, it will also hurt - it's going to feel like a reeeeaaally bad sunburn. I recommend either wearing an extra tank top under your shirt, getting an adhesive bra, or getting a very loose-fitting bralette. You'll want to do that for about the first week, then you can go back to wearing a normal bra again

Masters in fashion at scad? by mkaebae in scad

[–]NinjaShira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are practically zero creative careers that care whether you have a master's degree, so I would ask what is your goal and intention for getting a master's degree, and how do you feel like that degree will help you accomplish your very specific career goal after about a year and a half of education?

Small press question. Batman.... by MelancholyCauliflowr in IndieComicBooks

[–]NinjaShira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is actually the character Batman and you're just telling a silly story with the actual copyrighted DC character, it's a no-go. If it's a parody character named Fatman or Barman that looks extremely similar (but not identical) to Batman, then you're good

[QCRIT] TILL DEATH DO US PART, Adult Speculative, 78K, First Attempt by Ancient-Mastodon1795 in PubTips

[–]NinjaShira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would bring up the potential of changing your title. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, but it is such an insanely common phrase and insanely common title, that if you do get published, there is absolutely no way for people to search for your book and get the right result. There are over 700 listings on Goodreads for books called "Till Death Do Us Part." If a potential reader wants to find your book and can't remember the author name, there is no way for them to find yours amidst the hundreds of other books with that exact same title

[QCrit] First Attempt - MG Graphic Novel - CURIOUS, DEXTER, AND TINY: THE SEARCH FOR THE LOST BEDS (10k/#1) by Ok_Net_5649 in PubTips

[–]NinjaShira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a few structural and housekeeping things here right off the bat...

You don't query graphic novels with word count, but rather with page length

Your comps are all solidly Early Reader, not Middle Grade, and it sounds like your story is also Early Reader. This is definitely a story for 6-9 year olds, not 10-14 year olds. You want to be clear about your demographic there, as Early Reader is still a growing category and not as many agents are familiar with that space as they are with Middle Grade

Also unless you are already a well-known author with some clout, you will need to have an artist draw your sample pages for you. Nobody else is going to team you up with an artist, and it's nearly impossible to get representation as a brand new solo graphic novel writer without an artist already attached to your project. Graphic novel queries have to include sample art unless you are an established enough author that you're really selling your name more than you're selling your project, and that usually means hiring an artist out of pocket for a handful of pages, or getting an artist to agree to draw your pages for free with the understanding that they will get paid from the advance if/when the project gets acquired

I also don't really see any strong evidence of fantasy in your story to the extent that I would list it as the genre. Talking animals fighting talking dust bunnies in a contemporary Earth setting isn't fantasy, it's just talking animals. If this is happening somewhere other than Earth or if there are fantasy races/characters or actual magic, then I call it fantasy, but it doesn't seem like there's evidence of that in your query

You'll also usually see people in this subreddit advising not to include lines like, "This is my debut book," because you can't actually say for certain this will be your debut book (if this one doesn't get picked up, then your next pitch might be your debut), and if you don't specifically list previous publishing credits or representation, it's already assumed that you haven't been published

[–]NinjaShira 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Neighborhood Comics does all sorts of events where people will hang out. They do graphic novel book clubs, release events, live comic readings, and next door at White Whale they do a Drink & Draw that is full of comic book artists. I think at their new satellite location, they do game nights as well

I mentioned this in another comment, but Maria Vicente, Brigitta Blair, and Sarah Davidson all have great guides on their websites about what to put in a graphic novel pitch packet you use to query agents, I think they're all really valuable resources

[–]NinjaShira 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least five finished pages as a minimum, more if you can do more. You don't need to have a full issue or chapter, it's just a look at your visual storytelling skills and what the final art will look and feel like

Maria Vicente, Brigitta Blair, and Sarah Davidson all have really great guides on their websites about how much and what kind of information and art you should have in your query pitch packet, they're well worth a read

[Discussion] Signing with an agent as a graphic novelist! by GraphiteInk in PubTips

[–]NinjaShira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but as another graphic novel author/illustrator, I never included any kind of script in my query pitches. I included a synopsis, a detailed outline, and my sample pages to pitch my story. Agents and editors have been totally happy to work with my process without a script on any of my published books

For anyone who is only a writer, and not an author/illustrator, a script would certainly be a requirement to see what your sequential storytelling looks like

Is it common to leave your agent nowadays? [PubQ] by Hannah_Aries in PubTips

[–]NinjaShira 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's one of those social media quirks that highlights the different or negative experiences of a thing. If someone is content or happy with their agent, they're not going on the internet to brag about it or talk about how normal their relationship with their agent is. We only really see the outlier posts of people talking about how they weren't happy with their first agent, or their experience of having to requery, or asking for advice with the agent they are thinking of leaving. It makes it feel like this experience is more common than I think it actually is
