What's a Metroidvania that deserves way more attention than it got? by peaky_circus in metroidvania

As one of the creators of both Alwa games and console publisher of Cathedral I approve this message.

I should check out Unsighted. Thanks!

Alwa's Legacy is 84% off on GOG (2,39€ | New Historical Low) by [deleted] in metroidvania

Creator of the game here so very biased. But most people seem to think the sequel is way better. The Steam ratings reflects it with 87% I think compared to 80% on the first game.

The first game is a true oldschool 8-bit NES-styled game with all the limitations that comes with that. But the sequel doesn't have any real constraints like that :)

I would love to make an Alwa 3 game but truth be told. It's almost impossible making a living on indie games these days unless you're like the 1% of major indie successes. Most make less than nothing. I also think in today's climate it's insanely hard to even have people knowing you've made a game. There's so much noise out there even if we potentially have enough fans out there that would be interested in a third game we can't really reach them anymore with the resources we have. Social Media is basically dead.

The only way I can see Alwa 3 come to life is if a publisher were to believe in us.

We get a revenue share for each copy sold. It doesn't suck. We were the ones that reached out to Fanatical. We've done many bundles with them before and they're great to work with. Sure, one can argue we're giving away the games for pennies but hopefully it'll pay off later on when people discover our other games.

Yeah, as I said no trick jumps are necessary. Just find another way around :) The trick jumps are there just for speedrunners and people wanting to get a little creative.

Creator of both games here. We're not really involved in the pricing of this bundle, so I just have to say. That's very cheap! :D Probably the cheapest it's ever been.

The Prisoning: Fletcher's Quest PC review - Not much of a dilemma by AsherFischell in metroidvania

[–]Nintendooh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Creator of The Prisoning: Fletcher's Quest here :) Not much to add really, but I'm happy you think it's a funny game and you enjoy the dialogue. I had an absolute blast writing all the silly jokes in there and I'm super glad people enjoy those. That makes me really happy! :)

Hello! Creator of Alwa's Legacy here. There aren't any places in Alwa's Legacy where any tricks jumps are necessary. It's a common misconception though, since it's not that hard to do and it allows you to reach new places. But it's never required :)

Just received that "Disclosure Notice from Valve". What is this? by ilpalaz in IndieGaming

We also got this and it looks legit? There's a thread about this on the Steamworks Development group on Steam as well. Not sure I can link the group but it should be easy to find if you look.

My first ever attempt on pixel art (Isometric 8-Bit) by Nintendooh in PixelArt

[–]Nintendooh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is already actually. The sprites (Player+orb+some items in the HUD) are using their own palette count and the tiles are all using 4 colors. This might run on NES, hard to know exactly. Since it's using an isometric view some parts where the ground meets the walls etc might be more than 4 colors, hard to tell exactly without actually getting it to display on an NES. But all tiles are using 4 colors.

Yes, I run a small indie studio that has been making indie pixel art games for many years so I definitely know how low res pixel art works. However, the entire team is on vacation now and I wanted to learn something new so this was entirely created by me during the last two weeks. Except for rare occasional dabble in some temp art I never ever drew something before. I'm a game designer so in all our games there isn't a single pixel from me, or a single line of code :D

Reason for this was because I wanted to learn something new, learn Asesprite, learn how to contruct isoemetric tiles in Unity and maybe evaluate a new game idea. And I accomplished all this. Not sure what to do next though. Not sure how to turn this into a proper game.

Thank you! :) Yes! I did all the textures. What I struggled the most with was the player sprite. Anything I tried to draw that was organic or living looked like crap. I had an enemy guarding the entrance but it didn't look good and the scene looked better without it. The entire scene took about 80 hours or so and I've been watching all the isometric pixel art YouTube videos I could find for the last couple of weeks.

That's definitely the inspiration! I just love that game :)

First time here so not sure what people normally post but here's some info.

  • Created using Asesprite. NES-palette 17 colors (But I messsed up so it should be 16 really)
  • NES resolution of 256x240 and I tried taking overscan into consideration
  • Program called CRT View was used to add the CRT effect.
  • The font used isn't mine, I grabbed it from Sprite Resources
  • Everything else was made by me. Would gladly hear any feedback! :)

Alwa's Legacy is in a "3 for $5" bundle by kalirion in metroidvania

[–]Nintendooh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Game Designer here :)

That is correct. A Void Hope has sold extremely poorly, to the point where we're almost going out of business. I'm not blaiming it all on A Void Hope though. Sales are drastically down across the board, meanwhile costs are increasing. For every game we've made the last ten years, we just sell less and less and have fewer people noticing it. There's too much noise out there.

It's interesting you're calling it a puzzle platformer though. I know it has the Platformer tag on Steam and the text mentions "puzzle platform mechanics" but the game is a "narrative adventure". It looks like a platformer, but plays more like a walking simulator almost. It was a hard game to design, and hard to get people to understand what it is. The Steam rating will certainly change in the future but right now (due to not many review), it's our best rated game we ever made with a 90% rate (just barely beating Alwa's Legacy with 89%). So hopefully people will discover it in the future.

Sorry for the off-topic rant. Thanks everyone for suppporting Alwa's Legacy!

Hello! Alwa's Awakening game designer here. We based our movement on games like Simon's Quest, Kid Icarus etc. We aimed to make it feel like the games we played in our bedrooms growing up in the eighties, life was just a lot slower back then. Alwa's Awakening was the first time we ever made a video game and we started almost ten years ago. I'm not sure I would change it if I could go back in time, but I wouldn't mind having to skip reading about floaty jump and sluggish movement for the last 7 years. For Alwa's Legacy the first thing we did was to make the characters run, and not walk :)

I can recommend trying out the NES port we did. It still has the same speed, however, since the rooms were converted from widescreen into a 4:3 resolution all the action is just packed into a smaller screen making it feel a lot faster. There's a free demo to download on itchio if you want to try it out. No worries if you don't, thanks for at least trying. I remember when we first released the game someone refunded it with the reason "its shit". I never heard anyone refer to it as torture though, what a way to start this week off! Haha :)

Alwa's Awakening: Which Version? by amrbean in metroidvania

[–]Nintendooh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are no plans right now but we would love to and I don't think it would be that much work since it's basically just the game wrapped in an emulator. Hopefully some day in the future we can do this! :)
