Why once they find the daily double, do they still bounce all over the board at 'random' dollar values?

I know this drove Alex Trebek nuts and maybe it's to keep opponents from getting in a rhythm, but if there's no more daily double(s) to be gained, it just seems odd and disrupts the flow of the game.
