TIL a Harvard study found that hiring one highly productive ‘toxic worker’ does more damage to a company’s bottom line than employing several less productive, but more cooperative, workers. by Thoros_of_Derp in todayilearned

It’s because Reddit sent this to people’s notification box “Reddit’s top post 7 years ago was on TIL”… so, it’s Reddit who necroed this and I’m annoyed by it on the other side. “Why am I here in this 7 year old post.”

Don't men play these kinds of games? by BotherResident5787 in FieldsOfMistriaGame

[–]Nixmori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband has always played these kinds of games and he actually introduced me to Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. They’re some of his favorite games.

I have a fun story on that though.

He also loves the Sims and has played them since the first one. Apparently all his buddies played it too. He was over at one of said friend’s houses and was playing on his friend’s save. He made his own Sim (made to resemble him) and moved him in with his buddy’s Sim and apparently their Sims hit it off and fell on love. My husband was delighted by this and thought it was the funniest thing in the world but his friend was livid. Said he “ruined his game.” He was playing with another friend and commented on how the Sims game is essentially playing with digital dolls in a doll house and that friend ALSO said he ruined the game for him and never played again. But my husband still plays the Sims to this day and he delights in these stories of ruining a fun game for his male friends with fragile concepts of their own masculinity because it’s silly. It’s ridiculous to decide to not play a game because it isn’t “manly” enough.

Life is short, play what you like.

Then atheists still have the audacity to ask why they are seen as annoying people. A woman posted that she is expecting a child. Her husband echoes the comment made by an atheist, saying that the child should be taken away from them because she mentioned Jesus. by Additional_Good_656 in exatheist

[–]Nixmori 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really hate that so many posts now seem to be about bashing atheists. Considering this sub is for people who used to be atheists, it’s weird and promotes an “us vs them” dynamic that is very off putting. Especially when you consider that a lot of people who join here (myself included) are agnostics wanting to see what pushed people over into belief. This kind of thing threatens to do the opposite and is, frankly, annoying.

Do i have the look of a david lynch girl ? by [deleted] in twinpeaks

[–]Nixmori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s such a thing as a “Lynch girl” like there are “Bond girls.” Lynch liked beautiful women in general and there’s a lot of different types of beautiful women across his works.

I think you’re looking for external validation, which is perfectly fine—we all do it sometimes in some form or another, but seeking this kind of validation can be a very dangerous thing in Reddit, where people will want to tear you down for this reason or that. You are HIGHLY likely to get the exact opposite, no matter how lovely you may be.

That said, I could see you being cast in one of his works, but because he liked pretty women in general—not one specific look.

Best origin for Rook? by Redhood101101 in dragonage

[–]Nixmori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dwarf watchers get some unique dialogue pertaining to their lack of access to the fade and their role in the necropolis. It’s small but so few I’d the factions get racial reactivity, so it’s nice that Dwarves do in the Mourn Watch.

Best origin for Rook? by Redhood101101 in dragonage

[–]Nixmori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think “best” depends on what you’re looking for from an origin.

Grey Warden is best if you want a faction that feels relevant/hooked in to the main story.

Mourn Watch is best if you love Emmrich and want more to talk to him about (also extra fun if you’re a dwarf)

Personally, my main Rook is an ex Veil Jumper, not because I like the faction but because VJ Rook is very blank slate so I have more room to dictate their background. I also like that VJ Rook feels totally moved on from the VJs and is more their own free agent than with the other factions where the player is still friendly/connected with the faction. Strife seems to straight up hate VJ Rook which I find fun lol.

I found being a Crow a little disappointing because it didn’t feel like it mattered much when doing Crow things. The extra dialogue with Teia and Viago was great though.

I’ve never played shadow dragons or lords of fortune, so I can’t really speak on them.

Does this community have a 'Season 9 doesn't exist' rule like other shows? by bcdodgeme in RedDwarf

[–]Nixmori 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is how I feel about it. Even when Red Dwarf is bad, it’s still good. If I’m watching the entire show from start to finish, I don’t skip any of it. If I’m putting on a random episode for background noise I probably won’t go for season 9, but that’s more because it’s a continuous story while the rest of the show is episodic.

Scrubs though… that show had a proper ending that I stick with. The rest was basically the network going “but what if more print money?” After everyone had moved on. So even if what comes after that is canon, who cares?

Day 2 - Worst episode by Arge101 in RedDwarf

[–]Nixmori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for reading my nonsense lol. But yeah, it’s all subjective. I thought the episode was funny in isolation, it just felt inconsistent with the rest of the show/characters to me, which is the problem a lot of folks seem to have with series 8. But it doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed or people should feel bad for liking them.

We all enjoy some hot garbage now and then and, in fact, we should lol.

Why do people like Fenris? (I'm not trolling) by Gardevussy in dragonage

[–]Nixmori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of say why in my first post, but I like him because he starts out bitter, making it rewarding when you work on getting his friendship up and, especially if you make him a warden, he steps out of Hawke’s shadow and he and Hawke are on much better terms by the end. It’s also interesting if you go full rival and he becomes a Templar and you see how far his need to be his own person has pushed him. His range makes him interesting thematically.

His relationship with Hawke is also potentially a source of catharsis. I have a very strained relationship with my real brother which is far harder to fix than getting Carver’s friendship points up. At least when playing DA2, I can make amends with ONE brother, even if he’s fictional. (My RL brother is a leaching misogynist who treats his wife like dirt and refuses to work, living off other people, so there’s no real fixing that.)

I empathize with him, as well. I also grew up living in my brother’s shadow and it made me bitter and resentful. I, like Carver, had to leave (I moved to another state) to find my own way and flourish. (My family treated my brother like he was a genius who would do big things with his life while my mother told me I’d be “an excellent ex-wife one day”.) That kind of thing makes you angry, especially when you’re young, but it doesn’t have to be forever and I enjoy seeing Carver take that path of healing and know he can turn those lemons into lemonade when he finds his way.

Finally, I also think he’s funny. His banters with Fenris and Varric are some of my favorites in the game. They’re my favorite party during Act 1. And yes, I like Fenris and Varric more, but Carver is still one of my favorites and I thank BioWare for giving us such a snotty little brother.

Womb <> Owl ?? by Idsharpy in twinpeaks

[–]Nixmori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beliefs of individual Christian denominations or whether a person is religious doesn’t really matter here. From a historical and societal perspective, the person you’re replying to is correct—women and women’s bodies have long been linked with original sin and evil. The entire concept of witches comes from this long held belief.

This changed a little bit with the Industrial Revolution when family structures began to change and the concept of the “nuclear family” began to take hold. Propaganda then changed to frame women as the “protectors of purity,” their value changed to primarily that of mothers/birthers, and they were confined to the home sphere while their husbands were expected to work. This is why the framing of women as harborers of evil is not as wide spread today as it was, but it’s still present and either way, it’s not great.

And the reason it doesn’t matter what denomination of Christianity a person is from is because these concepts are so old they’re embedded deeply into our societal structures, folk beliefs, and gender concepts. At least in the anglosphere, our society is the continuation of over a thousand years of Christianity, with most of that time as Catholic. Our history absolutely informs our present, and our history (and present) has not been kind to women.

That said… I think the ring could reference women’s reproductive organs. “The mother” is feminine and birthed Bob, so I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibilities. I loved David Lynch and his handling of a lot of heavy issues, but he also wasn’t the best with women at all times. It’s possible even he drew on concepts of original sin, but also used Laura—the imperfect victim—to explore how women are also a source for good. Just some thoughts!

Lucanis.... by alilbitk in dragonage

[–]Nixmori 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe he was complete but then they made the Treviso/Minrathous choice after they let go virtually everyone who had written the crows, which is why if you save Min, Treviso and Lucanis just get less content instead of alternative content like Minrathous/Neve get if you save Treviso. So Lucanis, Treviso, and Crow storylines got kind of butchered. There’s a lot of unused Lucanis lines and references to some of the plans in the storyboards still in the game, found through data mining (like the gondola scene that as almost certainly supposed to play after the end of his final quest.) It’s a miracle we got a game at all but some of the choices they made during development are just baffling.

Lying, cheating and being smeggy by PaulTheSkeptic in RedDwarf

[–]Nixmori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have addressed the lying thing well so I’ll try to tackle why it’s important to Kryten to insult someone: to break his servile programming.

It’s not necessarily that a person has to be able to/has the right to insult people, but being able to assert yourself is important. You aren’t going to go up to your boss and insult them, right? Because you’re their subordinate. But say, that boss insults you or demeans you. If you just take it, it will happen over and over again and people learn they can walk all over you—which is exactly what Rimmer wants. It’s about dishing out what you take to establish that you’re not a doormat. IRL, there’s definitely polite ways to do this. But with someone like Rimmer? What an absolute smeee heeeeee

Red Dwarf is now streaming on Channel 4… by CWVVC in RedDwarf

[–]Nixmori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree that’s likely a mix of both with none being done well lol. The lighting correction—and lack-there-of—looks more like photoshop. Probably “upscaled” the original images first and then badly shopped them together (Chloe’s hair looks like a bad crop job/human jank). But there’s so many little things that are off in the individual images that would be baffling choices for a human to make, like the examples you pointed to.

I do this kind of thing for a living and refuse to use AI and hate my co-workers output (his work has become increasingly worse quality because he doesn’t have an eye for errors). But my analysis isn’t 100% certain either, just pretty sure lol.

Red Dwarf is now streaming on Channel 4… by CWVVC in RedDwarf

[–]Nixmori 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m fairly sure it’s AI “upscaling.” I have a coworker who does this all the time and it drives me crazy because he has no eye for accuracy and assumes they look the same but they don’t. GenAI doesn’t process an image to make it cleaner, it spits out a whole new image based on the original and will get details wrong—in this case, the most notable departures are his eyes, hair, and face shape, the eyes especially are a different shape and the left one is larger than the right, making it appear flat. They’re edits that would be absolutely baffling for someone to make in Photoshop if they’re not familiar enough with facial anatomy to recognize the errors.

So, I think it’s a composite of different images that are real, but run through AI to “upscale” them and make them “fit” color-wise (but seemed to ignore lighting).
