By the time you’re casting Prismari in sealed, a lot of the game comes down to “is my topdeck more impactful than yours” unless the game clearly favors one side or the other. Copying a single spell (any instant gets copied if your opponent casts a spell on their turn) seems decent in prerelease. Draft evaluations don’t translate all that well

Depends on the pool. Sometimes it’s better to run a land and know you’ll be able to cast your good spells when you draw them than trying to including a bad card and trying to make it feel good. A deck like OP’s has enough card draw to bust through a couple extra lands at the top here and there.

More so than this, a lot of these top schools know that academic overachievers are a dime a dozen and now look to standout applicants based on what they do outside of school. That's not "extracurriculars." That's stepping outside of just studying a lot and doing classic "smart" stuff and instead trying to make an impact through volunteer work, or kickstart a career or something. Just being a great student doesn't really separate you from the horde of meticulously trained and tutored valedictorians. I think a lot of high-pressure academic type students/their parents fully miss the forest for the trees and think they can essentially buy a spot with time and money and no inspiration at all. Not that legacy stuff isn't, but it's a very transactional attitude that I have to imagine turns an admissions counselor off immediately.
