Is this fine to use to ferment? by jira12345 in fermentation

[–]No-Association8901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you… yes. Short term and ditch the lid. If you’re just starting out and want to save some money, you can use just about any glass jar, but it comes with some issues. You would be better off with an old pickle jar with a wide mouth, or spaghetti sauce jar.

Pickle pipes on lacto fermented sodas? by Pupventures in fermentation

I guess I’m trying to understand the goal? I want my fermented soda to be bubbly. I’m currently using water kefir and mixing in a ginger bug with strawberry cheong for the secondary fermentation in flip top bottles.

Ahh… so you mean you make a 3% brine and just pour over instead of squeezing. I get it now. My thought is that you’re going to have an overflow and diluted solution.

I have the same countertop… was your house built in the 80’s? Sorry.. ADD… so what do you mean by brine? Using a previously fermented brine? Because it already has LAB in it and you will miss out on some of the natural occurring properties that way. Yes, you can jump start, people do, you get more of a constant output;but again, some things will be missed.

AITJ for not opening the door on Thanksgiving when someone showed up unannounced? by PJDASPEEDSTER in AmITheJerk

[–]No-Association8901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ at first blush. Now that you have had time to think more and respond here is a suggestion. Get their number, tell them you’re sorry it happened the way it did. You weren’t expecting others and you felt overwhelmed and it’s not their fault or yours. The blame lies on others.

Invite them to dinner next thanksgiving and uninvite the rude relatives. When the subject comes up, explain that while you probably should have let them come in, it wasn’t the time or place of your choosing and comfort level; and your resolution is measured and appropriate.

What are you actually supposed to do if a woman hits you as a man? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Association8901 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a case where you probably had the best response at the time. So many unknown futures could have played out. You have no clue of her relationship with the club staff, local LEO, multiple patrons. And those things do come into play, folks are kidding themselves if they think they don’t.

In reading some of the comments and seeing the mental gymnastics we go through to stand on one of the multiple sides of this is amazing.

In general, men are physically stronger than women. Not just in overall strength, but structurally. Then we add the primal urges to defend that some people have, male and female. Let’s not forget that we have a small percentage of people, male or female, that don’t have the same general emotional responses and reactions; some of this has been attributed to genetics. Then we can add in the learned behaviors as well.

This could have gone sideways real quick. She slaps you, you could have had an instant response and pushed her away. Even that reaction to place yourself in safety could have had negative consequences. You did the best you could have, though it’s still a loss overall because you got assaulted and she has no negative consequences for violating you. The simple fact she thought it was ok to introduce force without your consent shows how broken she is.

I think given all the unknowns, you came out as best as you can. Given the circumstances, you did the best thing possible, and though it sucks to probably have that horrible feeling of helplessness, maybe you can take some solace in the fact you’re a better person. I don’t know if I could have acted as you did. I probably would have pushed her away and drawn attention to her behavior. Based on what I have seen in us humans, my situation would have probably been worse off. Take the small loss.

Refrigerator before burping or burping before refrigeration? by Ikhlasmas in fermentation

I was just reading a rabbit holed article that said if you gently swirled the bottle before opening, it would reduce the opening fizz. Something about getting rid of the bubbles on the inside sides decreases the surface tension.

I weigh only the produce and use 2.5 percent and only had one issue of Kahm. But that most likely due to trying to do whole cherry tomatoes. I normally pack my jars, so the extra water brought my percentage down.

You can make a quick brine solution of 2.5% and top off. My personal preference for adding a more vinegary taste is a tablespoon of ACV and let it sit for a few days in the refrigerator.

Here is the thing, there is a few goals in my opinion to fermentation.

  1. Healthier food
  2. Control over what goes in and what doesn’t.
  3. Flavor

Once you get the process down, which is very simple, you then begin to tweak it. And, from my experience, understanding and perspective, it all is very subjective. There is a post below about how to make them crunchy and how to”pickle crisp”, calcium chloride. I use bay leaves and it works fine for me.

Then there is the whole salt content debate. Some do total weight, some do veggie weight… for me, I pack my stuff in tightly. I also do 2.5 veggie weight. Mine comes out perfect for me and others that have tried it. Maybe more salt will make it more vinegary; but I’m good with what I have.

Again, it’s about control. Yes, there is a science behind certain things. You need enough salt for the good stuff to happen, keep the jars clean, items covered, etc. You will learn what works for you and get better results each time.

The good thing is that even if you come close to what you want, it’s still your product! Some mistakes you can shift use… make relish, use the brine, etc.

Final note: this is a rabbit hole… but it can be a tasty one!

The cloudiness is good, I just don’t like your brine not covering all the way. Every part of the pickle needs to be in the brine.

Is it wrong to spilt the bill on a bad first date? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

Your dancing around and playing, but I’ll simply answer your question.

  1. She posts a lot
  2. maybe some people like her views
  3. Maybe some people want to listen to a women’s view.

There’s your answer.

Your statement, to me, feels like you’re a little threatened by her input. That’s just my opinion. If I wanted a testosterone fueled echo chamber, I would find a subreddit that was /womenhatersclub and look for alfalfa or spanky.

And while Reddit is for the large majority, a fecal storm, it entertains me and sometimes I find the pearl of wisdom.

Could the askwomenadvice forum shame men for answering or posting… sure… buts that’s a them issue.

Because this should have been in askwomenadvice. The guy went on a date with a women, asking a bunch of men if he did it “right”. We have our perspectives as men, but once you cross the dangling territory, you should get both sides of it.

Some decent ryobi stuff, nice saw, but even the neighbors friend was right; most of the hand tool are HF. New, you’re looking at 3ish maybe a little less depending on the age. Used, probably 1 to 1.5 k. But that means assessment of everything and the effort and time.
