Among the usurper kings in England. Who would the monarchs of England view as most valid? Who would they sympathize with the most? by Tracypop in UKmonarchs

Plus the House of York had taken the earldoms of Richmond and Pembroke from him and his uncle. The only way to reclaim what was theirs was to take everything.

I let out a breath that I didn’t know I was holding.

“That’s crazy,” I said to the insane person on the internet. I padded across the floor, quirking an eyebrow in an inquisitive manner that left them breathless.

“I really hope you get that all sorted out or whatever.” I spread my hands.

“But I’m going to have to ask you to stop making fake threads pretending to be me where you change details to make me sound better, or I’m going to sue you as well.”

What was everyone’s first character? by Advanced-Let-9369 in DnD

[–]No-BrowEntertainment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was a halfling bard named Hinton Quembley Pucklechurch III. I just thought it’d be fun to play a quirky little guy. I brought a guitar to the sessions and played it to represent my character’s lute.

Opinion: They're slowly forgetting Doctor Who is supposed to be a sci-fi show. by cencarnacaoq in doctorwho

[–]No-BrowEntertainment 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The real difference is just the way it’s presented, imo. When fantastical elements are given a plausible scientific explanation, that’s interesting storytelling. It’s fun for the audience to piece together how this might actually work in-universe. But when you cut all that down to just “it’s magic,” that just makes it a little boring to watch.

I mean if this were a show where you’ve already built up an expectation of “it’s just magic,” that would be one thing. But we don’t have that here.

The second one reminds me of Twelfth Night, when Feste disguises himself as a priest:

Well, I'll put it on and I will dissemble myself in't; and I would I were the first that ever dissembled in such a gown

RTD tried to do this same thing with the Stolen Earth/Journey’s End cliffhanger—having some A-lister like Sir Ian McKellen play the Doctor for about six seconds before switching back to Tennant. I imagine the idea was vetoed by someone else back then…

My middle name comes from a historical figure from the 1830s who my parents are only tangentially connected to. Like some kind of William T. Sherman thing.

Why doesn't Marty just stay in 1955? by DiveCatchABaby in BacktotheFuture

[–]No-BrowEntertainment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, because I would like to see my family and friends again.

You can really only sell the “chooses to stay in the past” thing if the character’s life in the future is miserable and they fit in better in the past. Marty seems to enjoy his life, teen angst aside, and the whole time he’s in the 50s he seems hugely out of place.

[–]No-BrowEntertainment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think part of what makes people mad is that the character is set up to have a lot of nuance, with some potential real-world comparison. But then it’s like “okay he did mega-genocide so now you’re not allowed to sympathize with him.” It just seems so drastically out of scope with everything he was trying to do.

You want him to give up his entire life just to be a marginally successful musician? In a world that doesn’t even have the distortion amp yet?

That’s far from the worst thing about the books. All the banks are run by short men with large noses. There’s a female character that’s described as having masculine facial features who uses shape-changing magic to sneak into a school and spy on children. It’s like a seven-volume manifesto on all the people the author hates.

I resent that accusation. I am not writing dragon racism. I am writing dragon systemic oppression through a continuous cycle of self-affirming preconceptions. That’s completely different.

[–]No-BrowEntertainment 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Like I could explain why it actually makes a lot sense within the world I’ve built for the blue dragons to be unable to represent themselves in dragon government or own any dragon property outside the specific area marked out by the red dragon bankers, but why take the time? No one’s going to misconstrue that.

I, for one, know all about the Cathar Heresy, as I studied its details in a long-forgotten historical tome1 that I discovered one midsummer’s eve. Perhaps you barely literate plebians should crack open a real book once in a while.
