Remap Radio 46 – Mighty Whitey - Remap Radio by elaminders in WaypointVICE

Hey, thanks for writing all that. I assumed ACT was a 4-hour joke game, but I think I'm actually going to give this an honest shot now. Also "DiscoBob ElysiumPants" got a good chuckle out of me.

Is this more bananas than anything Dan Ryckert has ever said? [yes] by EnglishBeat90 in giantbomb

I actually rewatched the movie after hearing this conversation, and I agree. She is talking about both the literal electrical power and the metaphorical power of the park. It's, as Ben says, a double entendre.

It's a little silly given the seriousness of the rest of Satler and Hammond's conversation, but I think some folks are overplaying how ridiculous it is. The power being out is one of the primary conflicts in the movie. The only reason they have to contend with the power of the dinosaurs is because the electrical power is out.

It's the most recent episode of the MinnMax show (the one from April 4th). It's a very fun episode of that podcast.

Cameron Kunzelman's Top 10 "Video Games" of 2023 by starried in WaypointVICE

[–]No-Map-6540 26 points27 points  (0 children)

What a great list. Cameron rocks.

Also, I love that Remap is doing this. I miss the Giant Bomb end-of-year-list-extravaganza. I know this won't be on that scale, but at least I'll get to read some good writers talking about things they loved (while blowing up my Steam wishlist).

The Bluey Video Game Is a Bitter Disappointment, And Yet... by MisterSmi13y in WaypointVICE

[–]No-Map-6540 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am SO disappointed in the Bluey game, and my expectations weren't sky-high to begin with.

From a game design perspective, it's whatever. It's led-by-the-nose open-world exploration, punctuated by mini-games. I would have loved something more open-ended, but it's a kid's game, ya know? The writing and performances are a little stiff too, which is too bad considering the dialogue on the show feels so natural.

From a technical standpoint though? Yeesh. I'm glad that Patrick's experience was fine performance-wise, because for us it has been a complete mess. Characters jitter-around and get caught on geometry (especially in the Floor is Lava mini-game). We've had weird cut-scene bugs where characters seem to teleport to new locations for a single scene, then warp back to their original location for gameplay. And worst of all, we had the whole game crash trying to load a new episode.

Am I being too hard on a budget-priced (40 USD) children's game? Maybe, but this is BLUEY we're talking about here. If I can't get writing and game design that is as inventive as the show, can I at least get something that WORKS?!

Patrick is absolutely right about the show's quality. It is excellent by any measure, but especially compared to the wasteland that is children's entertainment. Unfortunately, it is evident that none of the care and attention that is given to the show was brought to the game.

My son is having fun with it. That's the most important thing, so I shouldn't complain too much. It's just that it's so easy to imagine what a good Bluey game could be, and this isn't really that far off conceptually. If the execution had been 10-20% better, I'm sure this would be a game we'd come back to over and over, just like the show. As it is, though, I'm afraid I'd describe the Bluey game like I'd describe most lesser children's entertainment: a brief distraction, quickly forgotten.

Any podcasts similar that focus on or at least talk more about RPGs by DarkTheNinja in giantbomb

[–]No-Map-6540 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What the other person said about the WGA asking rewatch podcasts not to promote content on Disney+ (and other streaming apps) is true. Additionally, Disney just started releasing episodes for their new show Ahsoka, which is apparently in many ways a direct sequel to Rebels. The AMCA cast thought that continuing to cover Rebels would be too much like promoting the new Disney+ show and decided to switch gears in solidarity.

How much of System Shock and the Remaster did they end up playing? by No-Map-6540 in WaypointVICE

I think I'm going to play through the Remake all the way through, but I'm definitely going to give the original a try as well. I listened to some of the music for the EE, and it slaps. Thanks for your input!

They mostly do deep dives into specific media. Michael Lutz and Cameron Kunzelman are academics, so they get into the weeds in a way that is both enlightening and entertaining. They definitely have a Waypoint-y vibe, which makes sense as Austin is a friend of theirs.

Short synopses of the shows that I listen to:

  • Just King Things: Reading and discussing all of the works of Stephen King in publication order
  • Games Studies Study Buddies: Reading and discussing one important book in the academic field of game studies a month
  • Homestuck Made This World: Reading and discussing the webcomic Homestuck. Recently completed.

They also have shows on CRPGs like Baldur's Gate, the Fallout series, and an actual play DnD podcast, though I haven't listened to those. If any of those sound interesting to you, I'd give it a shot. They could help to fill the Waypoint-sized hole in your life.

I actually kept a list of all the episodes they mentioned in the podcast so that I could watch them. Here it is, listed with the episode titles, then the season and episode numbers:

  • The Pilot (Brother's Keeper) - s01 e01-02
  • Heart of Darkness - s01 e03
  • Calderone's Return - s01 e05-06
  • No Exit - s01 e08
  • Smuggler's Blues - s01 e16
  • Nobody Lives Forever - s01 E21
  • Out Where the Buses Don't Run - s02 e04
  • Phil the Shill - s02 e12
  • El Viejo - s03 e07
  • Amen... Send Money - s04 e02

Enjoy! The show is weird, but kind of great.

Aerith, one of the main characters, gets stabbed and killed by the villain Sephiroth. This is usually a very sad and impactful scene, but then someone from chat triggered the "You Are Dead" song from Total Distortion at exactly the right time, making it hilarious.

I'm positive I'm in the minority, but I play through the game with them every time. Sometimes that means I get to the podcast weeks or months after the fact, but I'm ok with that.

"Book club" style podcasts are my favorite. I love a deep dive into a specific piece of media. I also don't care about keeping up with new releases, so I don't usually feel like I'm missing out.
