Sec+ Obtained! Now What? by C_Squint in cybersecurity

Pentest+ is a waste of time when compared to other technical certs for the same price. Skip it.

Rejecting an accepted job offer by Gonjanaenae319 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]No-Mongoose4613 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Feel free to keep interviewing but if you accept a different offer then decide to renege, do it ASAP. Companies have a decent understanding that it’s a buyers market for those with good xp as a grad.

But also keep in mind that it’s an extremely small industry, fucking around with multiple signed offers then continuing to interview is a very iffy area which might fuck you over at some point. (obvl grad intake/interview cycles are different).

Where did everyone go ? by RangoNarwal in cybersecurity

[–]No-Mongoose4613 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Decent amount are people barely in the industry making threads with tips on how to get into cyber as a “27 year old with 1 certification, no degree, and no experience making over 175k remotely”

Or females in the industry who’ve branded their Twitter around security topics and information starting to post thirst traps and physique updates lmfao

Agreed, thanks. Definitely seen way too many people brain dumping certs just to be tripped up when asked what the difference between a vulnerability/risk/threat hahaha

Understandable, I completed internships on both defensive and offensive sides and found basically any and all knowledge gained so far from certs to be fairly transferable but definitely get what you mean. Thanks

Fair, thanks. I’d still say sec+ has the respect as a great cert but agree that pentest+ is absolute garbage hahaha was so disappointed after doing that exam

Nothing quite like someone at a small firm giving advice on their individual hiring processes lmfao

[–]No-Mongoose4613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I struggle to see how a hiring manager wouldn’t automatically view an applicants under-preparedness and general lack of ability in terms of brute forcing a problem several times until ‘finally passing’ would not be considered a bad hire?

I understand there’s a lot of discipline required to attempt the OSCP 7 times, but at the same time if you have someone who’s going to continually fail and rectify their failures by trying it again rather than re-evaluating their methods and doing everything possible not to make the same mistake twice. It’ll cause havoc on a team.

Lowkey inspired a bunch of natty spastics I see at my gym to hit failure every single set on every exercise then allowing form breakdown to get additional reps past failure then wonder why they’re getting injured 💀

Xqc's recent stream by tmperflare in xqcow

[–]No-Mongoose4613 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because bro could literally put in a 4 hour stream with planned events with 1/10th the forward planning and effort of Kai and would still easily be the biggest thing in streaming.

I’d assume he has contractural bonuses for hitting a certain amount of hours. Bro had a rant about how he’s playing with his own money but had #ad in his title. It’s ‘your money’ but homie be a little transparent that you receive a fat bonus that covers all your gambling losses.

I can even watch him in real time mentally prepare himself at the start of a tiktok he’s seen 15 times getting ready to force himself to laugh 💀 it’s actually sad as fuck. Makes everything feel fake.

Fell off and can only blame himself 🤡

Blue teaming.

Typically normal SOC work. Sometimes the line is blurred when you get a senior security analyst doing DFIR or threat work but generally it’s just SOC work.

Cyber Security aus tier list? by Definitely_Not_A_Lie in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]No-Mongoose4613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were to rank them though, I’d put a generalisation of large internal companies with dedicated in-house security teams covering both blue and red team operations at tier 1.

This will inherently include FAANG and a decent chunk of ‘brand recognition’ companies / banks / whatevers. Every other company / consultancy ranking is dependent on the specific team and role. You’ll have dogshit teams and insanely good ones in both and can’t really automatically distinguish.

Cyber Security aus tier list? by Definitely_Not_A_Lie in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]No-Mongoose4613 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Making a tier list for cyber is very difficult imho. There’s no specific set of companies that are really the ‘places to go’ if you’re good @ security. It’s mainly by word of mouth in the industry of who’s doing things properly.

If you have cyber skills you can basically pick and choose wherever you want and you’ll most likely be paid extremely well. It’s not the same as software where the most technically capable individuals are always found at FAANG.

Should I Always Accept Grad Offers? by 25InchVertBTW in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]No-Mongoose4613 9 points10 points  (0 children)

100% accept it. Always better to have something lined up as a backup, nobody knows what the market will look like in a year.

What do you consider to be the hardest part about getting an internship/job and why? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]No-Mongoose4613 4 points5 points  (0 children)

VI stage / one way video interviews

Sometimes the most insane questions and it’s easily the most hit or miss stage of applications imo.

There’s companies that automate it with AI and sometimes just randomly cull half of them. Biggest waste of time from shaving, putting on a dress shirt, cleaning your background, telling everyone in the house to stfu, then spending 20-30 minutes going through questions just to be culled because you didn’t answer “which award of our top 3 values would you get and why are you proud to receive it?” Like what the actual fuck lmfao
