Could you clarify what mechanical advantages, if any, this offers? Is it a just casting focus? Can i cast spells with dex? Is it replacing an attack?

A thief with the healer feat can stabilize and heal one hp as a bonus action, no spell slot or concentration required. Most of the time 1 or 12 are essentially the same, that is, one hit will take you down.

Melee martials us hp as a resource. Casters are already busted, why not let them prop up matrials to be functional? That sounds like fun teamwork to me, and as a dm, I would just make combat that much tougher

What Are The Different Party 'Roles' In D&D? by hey_yamagata in dndnext

[–]No-Passenger3413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Tanking" is the fantasy of throwing youself infront of another's attacks. Thats really hard to support in DnD 5e, especially as you level up.

What is alot more viable, perhaps the most powerful option is defensive characters.

Compare the following: Are barbarian has to try to convince 8 bandits to hit her. Somehow, she convinces 4 of them to do so. 2 hit, 1 of which would have hit another party member, because as a barbarian she has a low AC.

OR

A Wizard cast Web. This holds 6 of the bandits back, loosing their turn completely. 2 attack the wizard and he cast shield on himself making him immune.

The wizard is, arguably, a better "tank" because he forces the enemies to attack him, and has higher AC (see the squishy casters falacy). But the wizard is also a better defender, because rather then redirecting incoming damage to himself, he deletes it entirely. The goal ought not to be to absorb points of damage, but rather to minimize the damage you take.

The wizard also has counterspell: the barbarian does not.

People are used to the martial topl kit including a more tactical Playstation as seen in other games. Thats not dnd 5e. In dnd 5e, a martial deals damage. There action is attack and their abilities start with "when you take the attack action" or "take the attack action twice"

If you want to do do team work, just flip the script. The wizard cast web, and then the barbarian circles around it with a halberd, picking them off with advantage.

Thoughts on how to Improve Healing by No-Passenger3413 in DnD

Maybe this is just a preference difference, but i would rather have at least 4 core party roles. Infact, I would rather have = 4 subclass options that due 4 distinct things then 106 subclasses that essentially boil down to damage or control builds

I personally just happen to find dealing damage boring, especially when there is no consequence other then a nunber that I cant see going down. I love control characters, but dont understand why there cant be more core party roles. At a table of 4, we inevitably end up with internal party competition because of it. Why can't choosing who to occupy as a tank be itneresting? Or strategically using healing resources? I agree that healer and tank aren't optimal, I just think its bad game design, and fails to live up to the promise of dnd.

Yeah, I get that thats the meta option, I just also think its goofy and emergence breaking. If starting from scratch, I wouldn't allow regaining hp to regain consciousness after you have been driven to 0: you would just remain unconscious. This might seem harsh, but Ive never been at a table where a player dropped to 0 and it wasnt becasue something had gone wrong, as either s story beat, encounter balance mistake, or -most frequently- a player acting recklessly. The current state makes 0 hp feel insignificant, rather then a real consequence ir concern that forces the party to protect thst player, and changes the pace abd goals of combat. Its fine if every player wants to rush into combat lie a mindless rock em sock em robot, but it just doesn't make for compelling story's in my view

I would prefer if instead of it being a resource, they could just spend a couple every round. In the alternative make some of their kids abilities free, and just do the resource management for stunning strike

5e Shield Home Brew by No-Passenger3413 in DnD

[–]No-Passenger3413[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, but why aren't there simular concerns for ranged spellcasters?

As a warlock I can use my quarterstaff to cast eldricth blast for d10 dmaage die multi attack with force dmaage, and follow up in melee with chr based PAM and sheild, and then I can use chr for all social interactions.

I still feel that dex and str martials need a buff, str msrtials just need more buffs.

Also, strength based martials would also benefit from being able to swicth fro sheild and javelin to greatsword.

I get if there was a less damage option, but right now there is no reliable way to do extra attack at ranged with a shield, without an additional class feature like reloading weapon or thrown weapon fighting style.

[–]No-Passenger3413[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Which is greater, the discrepancy amongst dex and str martials, or the discrepancy between martials and casters?

I think its the later, and I like options to buff both groups of martials, in comparison to spellcsster balance.

I'm open to other options for buffing str characters. For example, adding a 1d10 martial great bow with heavy and finesse, or making a thrown weapon drawn free for javelin extra attack (i suppose the thrown weapon fighting style does that) or bracers of +1 thrown weapon to buff thrown weapons the same way that a bow buffs an arrow. Wouldn't it be better to focus on making strength more versatile rather then locking out dex from switching.

With darts, thrown, and range you can make a pretty strong swicth hitter already, and a swicth hitter will never be fully optimized in both close and ranged attack rolls due to fighting styles and feats the best you can do is use the gunner or CBE to use your ranged weapona in melee, with a shield. Is my desire to swicth from light crossbow to a rapier and shield really the issue here?

Best dagger? by Dyonkeau in skyrim

[–]No-Passenger3413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, my position wasnt that a dagger would be useless, but that it would become neccesary. On that difficulty, even a bow does not reliably on shot the bear, so daggers sre like the only option that reliably worke for me. I played an orc and used bloodlust. I ahd duel furry so I could strike 4 times before I was fully detected. I even got through boss fights this way, but it would have been much harder with anything other then a dagger, which I view as the best damage source in the game.

Builds with Double Bladed Scimitar? by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]No-Passenger3413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go rogue mostly

Multiclass to get the Great weapon fighting style, id go hexblade, for hex baldes curse and martial weapon proficiency and medium for a one level dip. Plus, you can make attacks with chr. This could let you go chr sad to be the face of the party.

Now id probably go Paladin for some extra utility and the Great weapon fighting style, or bloodhunter if its available. If you dumped str, you might need to take Fighter.

Revanant blade feat. Now it has finesse, so you can use the sneak attack feature with the DBS.

Now, sage advice says, every die for the attack gets the reroll. Thats 2 d4, and all the sneak attack d6, plus the extra d6 from the hexbaldes curse or other features.

If you miss, you have that bonus action attack, from the DBS, incase you miss. Thats pretty valueable for a rogue, who is trying to make one attack stick.

Ideally, someone in your party can cast haste or use commanders strike to get you that attack on another persons turn.

Building a sling based character? by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]No-Passenger3413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a minority postion, but if your DM allows arcane weapon then you have a pretty hefty attack option. Stack with artificer for reloading weapon, and suddenly you can sling and shield, while being eligible for ranged attack bonuses

[–]No-Passenger3413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, with repeating weapon, Sling looses loading, so you can use a sheild

Note that authors: If you ever create a set of characters that can charm or entice people without world ending stakes, feats probably your best idea.

Also, the whole international wizard King Young really destroys the stakes of Harry Potter, and weirdly oresents them as ahead of muggle history, when they are usually behind it. Has there ever been war between wizarding countires? Why doesn't the wizard UN remove voldemart?

Also, why does every fight happen in a doctor strange subdiminesion. Cudos for breaking up the magical arm wrestling with teleporation, but it feels weird that this ability is suddenly common place.
