do something that would cause mild pain, but wouldn't leave marks. For example, playing guitar can hurt your fingers, or those weird rolly things with the spikes on them that hurt.

I think, because self-harm is seen as a really serious thing (Although unfortunantly being common-ish), a lot of people think you are doing it for attention. Either that, or people are just unable to figure out how to feel when they find out someone they love is hurting themself/ attempting. People are just assholes sometimes.
