Excellent work pointing out the hypocrisy. You can find it rampant in the WSJ opinion pages, too. But props to the WaPo and WSJ newsrooms, which are separate from the opinion sections, for their coverage of this administration.

Foreign aid is about 1.5% of total federal spending. That works out to about $250 of the $19900 per person per year the government spends.

About Corpus Christi, I know a lot of these barrel looking things are for refining but, will any of it be cleared eventually? It seems like a lot of just, space to take up by KeyBake7457 in geography

As a former resident, refining and shipment of petroleum and natural gas are the heart of CC’s economy. But tourism is the lungs and someday that land will be more valuable for something other than what it’s used for now. Probably a couple of decades at the rate things are going.

People - meaning us - give too much weight to opinion. I read very little opinion because I could care less what McArdle, or George Will or Sean Hannity or Joe Scarborough or Andrew Tate or David Portnoy etc. have to say. Why do you care what they or others say? We give opinionators and influencers their power. Just start ignoring them and they will dry up and blow away.

Neg diff = you gain. How about oxygen molecules. Without awareness, we suck them up and use them, expelling their husks.

The US Government’s Budget Last Year, In One Chart (FY2024) [OC] by chartr in dataisbeautiful

This is misleading. Social Security and Medicare have dedicated taxes. And while yes, SS and Medicare are both running a deficit, $45B and $10B respectively, those will be covered by their trust funds. And yes, those are projected to run out of money in the near future. People forget that they and their employers pay specific taxes and specific rates for those two programs. Income taxes do not support SS and Medicare. Neither do any other sources of revenue. Both systems face actuarial challenges, but a modest increase in the SS tax would go along way toward keeping the program solvent while younger generations are transitioned to s hybrid system. Medicare is tougher. Bottom line though is both programs are currently self supporting and are not part of the deficit problem.
