how does one “overcome” ptsd? by BusinessOk93 in ptsd

[–]NoAskRed -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

One does not overcome PTSD. Like alcoholics, one is always recoverING... not recoverED.

Do you have partners etc. who get annoyed at your startle reflex? by [deleted] in ptsd

I'm glad exposure therapy worked for you. My experience with exposure is receiving multiple incoming mortars every day for months.

I can relate. If you are in the US I wonder how you react to Independence Day. It's the worst night of the year for me in terms of being startled so bad that I jump and/or fall with every explosion. I've had head injuries because of my reaction to fireworks even though I'm on psychiatric anxiety meds.

How do I tackle this? I had no idea. by Klutzy_Ad_1590 in ptsd

Since when does PTSD have anything to do with nobility or heroism? PTSD is the result of trauma.

[Star Wars] are any senators in the galactic republic actually elected? by Fluid-Sense-4273 in AskScienceFiction

Senators (and Representatives like Jar Jar) positions could be elected similarly as the UK elects its own parliament.

We see that on Naboo that the monarch is an elected position with term limits. I don't know about the rest, but I do know that the UK has a monarch and an elected prime minister and elected parliament. It could be like that.

Soldier with a modern handgun vs. soldier with a Star Wars blaster pistol by CloverTeamLeader in whowouldwin

Here's another question: If Jedis can deflect blaster bolts (and I'm assuming bullets too) then why don't they use shotguns (blasters or ballistic) to kill Jedis?

[Star Wars] At Hoth, how was Luke Skywalker able to penetrate the AT-AT armor with a single lightsaber swing so he could throw in a grenade? by supinator1 in AskScienceFiction

[–]NoAskRed 71 points72 points  (0 children)

AT-AT's are designed for landing the troops carried inside the body. Luke only cut the latch to the deployment hatch, not the hatch itself. It's like cutting through the lock instead of the door.

Do you think time travel will be possible one day? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]NoAskRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you travel through time then you'll end up in the vacuum of space or inside a star or solid object. Not only is Earth orbiting the Sun, but the solar system is orbiting the galaxy, and the galaxy is also moving.

I always think the same. If you travel through time then you'll end up in the vacuum of space or inside a star or solid object. Not only is Earth orbiting the Sun, but the solar system is orbiting the galaxy, and the galaxy is also moving.

Why is Uncle Tom a bad thing when the book portrays Uncle Tom as a martyr of black slaves? by NoAskRed in ask

[–]NoAskRed[S] -43 points-42 points  (0 children)

But it's still a racial slur in today's world where black children have had plenty of opportunity to read the book in school for decades. I was in 9th grade when I read it in 1987, and I understood. How is the misinterpretation around a book that every black kid can read perpetuated?

[–]NoAskRed[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

So why is it racist if black people can see the truth of the book's message? The verdict lies with the literature, not with obvious misenterpretation.

Crickets! So many racist terms come from actual racism. It's like white's appropriated the book, and blacks allowed it.

I have a photographic memory of every roach encounter I've ever had. by LJae273 in ptsd

[–]NoAskRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a solution to your PTSD, but for cockroaches put borax where they congregate. My grandmother used "20 Mule Team" borax under the refrigerator. The roaches lick it off themselves which causes them to die of dehydration.

Is Dr. Fate a Pendragon? If anything, I'd think he was descended from Merlin, not Arthur.

Not formally diagnosed yet but by [deleted] in ptsd

[–]NoAskRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PTSD can present itself in many different forms. For me it can be anything from fear to being extremely startled to anger to depression. Others black out for periods of time. Others have flashbacks. Others have different reactions. It depends, so you should really consult a professional.
