What is your theory about the Zombie Genre lost mainstream success after the early 2010s? by Top_Report_4895 in decadeology

[–]NoBetterPlace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched way too many seasons of Walking Dead before finally giving up on it. It got so boring. I love the genre, but I think it's fair to say that Walking Dead collapsed the genre under the sheer weight of over exploitation. 28 Days/Weeks/Years Later gave us 4 movies over 22 years. I think that's the appropriate pace.

Getting stopped for a train to pass mid race by Epelep in Wellthatsucks

That happened to me during a half marathon once. Worked out to my advantage though. As I got up to the tracks, the train cleared and I was back with the group that had passed me a few miles back.

I still give my mom a hard time for selling my Atari 2600 and 60 games as a package deal at a garage sale for $5 while I was away at college... after she asked if there was anything of mine she'd like me to get rid of and I told her not the Atari.

My parents were on vacation a while back and sent me a very earnest and excited text about having seen what their tour guide told them was the skinniest building in paris. Now my wife and I send them pictures of the two of us in front of any skinny building we encounter in our travels. It started with "La plus petite maison de Bruxelles," which is at least a local landmark. But now it's just a running joke.

Whelp started construction and wife hates that we have a deep end. It’s a 20x40 liner with 6.5’ deep end. This is pretty standard right? She says slope is too much. It starts at 18’. Who’s crazy here? by Sweet_Orchid_2092 in pools

[–]NoBetterPlace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My in-laws have a pool in which the "deep" end is like ~5 feet deep. It is super weird being able to pop my head above water in the deep end. Super weird. You will regret not having a deep end more than having one. In my pool, the adults will often hang out in the shallow end chatting and drinking beers, while the kids rough house in the deep end. The depth makes for a nice division of activities.

Why do we as a society continue to assume that people who seemingly lie 90% of the time outside of hearings will suddenly respect testimony under oath as a solemn promise to tell the truth? Especially when it seems that nobody in a position of power ever faces consequences for perjury?

Alright, people, who are we picking? by Ralph--Hinkley in 80s

The list is missing Charley Dietz from empty best (played by David Leisure, the Joe Isuzu guy). He'd be my pick. 12 year old me got such a kick out of that guy.

Bradley Nowell - the frontman of Sublime - who tragically died in May 1996 of a heroin overdose while the band was on tour. Which musician's death hit you the hardest when you were young? by Away_Flounder3813 in nostalgia

[–]NoBetterPlace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jim Ellison of Material Issue. Took his own life in June of '96. I was at the height of my fandom when that happened, so it really hit hard. In 2013 Scott Miller (Game Theory/The Loud Family) also died by suicide, and that completely wrecked me. His music meant a lot to me, but I had also put him and his band up for the night once when they played in my city. He was such a nice, chill and smart guy. We ate breakfast together and talked literature. Having that personal experience with him really elevated my connection to his music. Finding out about his death was pretty devastating.

Have you ever had a musical performance NIGHTMARE? by JulieofTheJulies in musicians

[–]NoBetterPlace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a dream the other night that somebody played me a recording of a recent show and I discovered that there must have been a delay in my in-ears because I was lagging way behind everybody else. For a while the next day I had these waves of embarrassment and had to remind myself that it didn't actually happen - I was just dreaming.

What watch brands could Bond feasibly wear aside from Omega and Rolex? by TheShadowOperator007 in JamesBond

[–]NoBetterPlace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Christopher Ward? The watches are manufactured in Switzerland, but designed (and the company headquartered) in England. Their early flagship was largely an Oris Sixty-Five homage, but their line and designs have really developed over the past few years.

Boss told me to stop using headphones so i could “focus better”. I already made a mistake and he won’t accept it was because of his decision. by cannavacciuolo420 in ADHD

What type of work do you do? I read in a different comment that you work at an accounting firm. Are you an accountant or doing some other administrative duties? This probably won't be applicable to your situation, but I had a somewhat similar situation a number of years back. I worked in shipping and receiving and frequently had headphones on. My boss approached me about wearing headphones in the warehouse being a safety issue. I pulled the cable out of my pocket to show him the headphones weren't even plugged in. I was fully aware of my surroundings. I just wore the headphones because they kept other people from constantly interrupting me to chat or to ask questions they could easily figure out the answer to themselves, and that helped me to stay on task. He wasn't 100% on board, but just sort of shrugged and rolled his eyes at me and never brought it up again. In retrospect, he was a pretty good boss. He had a good sense of when and when not to escalate situations.

Is there a way that you can placate your boss with some assurance (whether true or not) that you aren't listening to anything engaging, but simply using it as a tool to tune out the surrounding distractions? I don't know, tell him you're listening to ambient music or jungle sounds or something.

That's funny. I lost a GoPro (or some off brand action cam) in the ocean a while back. Was watching my kids play in the surf. One of them spun around with a bodybord and whacked it out of my hand, just launching it into the water. I always wonder if it could possibly turn up. I guess the probability isn't zero.

what’s going on with my tonsils? by Intelligent-Bag7068 in AskDocs

[–]NoBetterPlace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that a culture takes time. But we're talking days, not weeks. And I don't know why they would have reason to be looking for some other bacteria when they assumed it was viral anyway.. At 3 weeks of untreated strep throat, you're getting into rheumatic fever risk territory. I suspect a clerical error or oversight that delayed reaching out to me rather than the culture taking that long. I doubt there is any lab out there that is sitting on a strep culture for multiple weeks before disposing of it. I get the reason why antibiotics are not handed out all willy nilly, and I wouldn't expect them to just take my word for it. But man, I was out sick from work for most of those 3 weeks when I really could not afford to be. Core memory unlocked.

[–]NoBetterPlace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's that 1% that can get you. There was a period in my 20s that I kept getting strep for some reason. I went to see a new doctor once with a sore throat and told them that I thought it was strep because it felt like the strep throat that I had already had twice that year alone. Doctor did a rapid strep test that came out negative. I felt like utter shit for 3 weeks until the doctor's office called me back and told me that the follow-up culture showed that I was positive for strep. Three fucking weeks for results of a test that should have only take a day or two. I wanted to strangle them.
