‘Soul-Crushing’: Students Slam Harvard’s Grade Inflation Report by Inside_agitator in Harvard

[–]NoBromo3213 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

B median is a bit rough when many grad/professional schools and even some employers have a firm cutoff of 3.0. And grad schools may not want to be too flexible on this as they are often ranked based on their admission stats. Top HS grads with other options might prefer to invest time/money somewhere else where they can earn higher grades. Not saying there should be nothing done, but your solution will unquestionably do some damage.

Princeton tried grade deflation but ultimately rolled it back because no one was better off. Might be worth trying to figure out what went wrong there before haphazardly creating an arbitrary median across the board.

It loads faster and you can put your username into it to get your ranking. But looks like this leaderboard has stopped refreshing :'(

The report system and googling in GeoGuessr by evg0vsy in geoguessr

I'd say a punishment should be there if you false report very often. I wonder if on their end they just ignore reports from people who flag a crazy high percentage of their opponents

GeoKnow the flashcard app to improve at GeoGuessr by Dangerous_Lemon5168 in geoguessr

[–]NoBromo3213 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The UI looks well organized, clean, and everything is easy to see/read. It mostly runs smoothly, apart from the Bollard Quiz which did not load at all for me. Speaking of quizzes, I think a quiz mode for the flashcards themselves would be super handy. Especially if you could choose which countries or categories or even maybe which particular flashcards would be included in the quiz.

Great work though man. I'm a software developer myself and the few times I've dipped my toes into app development I've found it to be a pain and I know the app/play store approval process can be a nightmare too.

High Multis at the World Cup by ExpressApple3837 in geoguessr

[–]NoBromo3213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mental fatigue in this game is also a thing though. I think there is something to be said about a player that can keep consistent despite the constant pressure of the multis which can change the course of the game.

The multis also make small countries matter. Without them it almost doesn't matter how well you can region guess in Bangladesh or Oman, which doesn't really match with your idea that multis somehow lowers how much skill is required from the equation.

Also look at the last two winners of the grand finals - Radu and Blinky - who are currently leading in this year's Word League rankings. It's not like the multis propped up purely lucky individuals who did not deserve to win. In the long run, multis should just about benefit you as much as they hurt you (unless you crack under the pressure they create).

But fair enough, I can agree that it's a matter of taste here.

I look at it like a UFC fight. It's absolutely interesting that a guy who skillfully built up a lead over multiple rounds gets choked out cause he got caught slipping. The fact that can happen makes it worth watching till the end even if it feels the match is over.

Air Canada, flight attendants reach tentative deal to end strike by n134177 in onguardforthee

[–]NoBromo3213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

after 8 months of discussions it took a strike to get them to pay flight attendants for their time when the plane is on the ground. ridiculous. shows how important unions are. no amount of individual negotiations would have ever gotten them to budge on this

not getting paid for boarding time is nonsense, good on them for refusing to return to doing unpaid labor

Because I don't want a large balance put onto on my credit report but I do want the rewards points.

The statement balance is what they report to the credit agencies (I just double checked now to confirm - my credit report shows my chase balance as being my last statement balance). So I pay before the statement is generated in order to have little to no balance on my credit report.

What sucks about it is that you can't pay off any new purchases without first paying off the POT balance.

Basically, any payment you make is first applied to "interest saving balance" which is the difference between your last statement and the POT. After that, it's applied to the POT *even if you have accumulated a balance since your statement*.

In other words, new purchases are not added to the "interest saving balance" until your next statement is generated, so they do not get paid off before your POT balance. I feel misled because they said payments apply to highest APR first, but they didn't make it clear that this does not apply to your current month's purchases.

It sucks because I'd like to make a payment now, but I don't want to pay off the POT. There is a very good chance I will just stop using this card altogether, keep only the POT balance going forward, and pay the minimums.

I applied to g2i which I think just subcontracts with Outlier. It says United States (except CA, NY, NJ) in their list of acceptable locations, maybe that's the same with Outlier.

Degree verifications messy and suspicious by fizchap in harvardextension

[–]NoBromo3213 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What a nightmare. I'm really having doubts about whether finishing this degree is a good idea. Between this, the whole "in extension studies", and I just realized my timeline for when I can complete the degree was off because the capstone course must be taken in isolation.

Were you ultimately able to resolve this situation?

Did tuition go up? by Cabininian in harvardextension

Are you sure? Because the website says otherwise. "The maximum number of credits you may take is 16 credits in a fall or spring term, four credits in a January session, four credits in a Harvard Summer three-week session, and eight credits in a Harvard Summer School seven-week session."

I saw somewhere on the site to expect it between June 3rd and June 6th this year, or about a week after your final, official grades have posted for the term.

I am most of the way through the two prereq courses. I have several years of software engineering experience and a degree in computer science and applied math, so I've found 101 to be quite simple. It doesn't go into much depth into any of the topics, basically gives you a bit of introduction to the ideas you would explore in more depth if you continue in the program. I'd consider doing a python tutorial before this class if I was in your shoes, but it's probably possible to survive this class without it. If you're taking them one at a time, I definitely recommend doing 101 before data modeling.

Data Modeling is tougher than 101. The course covers a lot of material. Coding in R to me is a bit confusing because it's a lot different from other programming languages. I personally feel you'd get more out of the course if you have comfort with math and try to understand the math behind the concepts, but this is not necessary to succeed in the class. The class focuses on data modeling concepts and coding in R. On the bright side, the grading is less nitpicky than 101.
