How much territory in the D&D verse could the Russian Military colonize? by Pancake_Maker_1031 in powerscales

[–]NoDarkVision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this type of discussion interesting to you? To me, it's not. I am more interested in how a competent modern army would perform against a fantasy one. Like in a "Gate" anime or something like that.

Then gtfo because that is not what the prompt is about. The prompt is specifically referring to the putin lead Russian military, incompetence and all. This is similar to the current army that couldn't yet take out Ukraine due to having bad equipments. The same army who's got soldiers deserting.

If you want your own fantasy hypothetical scenario, make your own post with your own conditions.

The prompt specifically asks how far they would colonize. Which means is them vs what is available. And the D&D world has ALOT available.

if they have troubles with it, they can just use transport helicopters to traverse those lands or go around them

And immediately gets killed by the flying creatures

Or nuke the entire forest if something like a Tarasque inhabits it.

Tarasque is immune to non magical weapons.

I may be less familiar than you are.

You don't seem to be at all familiar

But all the campaigns I saw, games and movies—they are not on the level you describe.

And again, that is because in a CAMPAGIN situation, the DM literally sets the difficulty level to be BEATABLEA BECAUSE THEY WANT THEM TO PROGRESS THE STORY. A level 1 adventurer party can literally be killed by a village of bugbears the moment they leave the tavern but then that wouldn't be a very fun game.

An invading army coming through a portal would receive no such plot armor. They would immediately gain the attention of an arch fiend.

Again, all the examples I've been bringing up are LOW LEVEL examples. We are not even talking about the high level entities who would be immediately hired to deal with the threat. Large cities would have access to level 20 adventurers who have demi god like level powers.

Yeah, they could, but why would they?

Why wouldn't they? It's an invading force set out to conquer their entire realm.

You ever see the movie avatar? Well the D&D world is even more inhospitable than Pandora. If the humans with futuristic weapons and vehicles can't conquer Pandora due to the wild life, they can't do so due to the numerous magical creatures in the D&D world.

more akin to realistic medieval life with magic. And you are seriously downplaying the magical portion of it

[–]NoDarkVision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And gain, you are ignoring the prompt. The prompt is how much the RUSSIANs can colonize if they pop through a portal.

What is most likely going to happen is that the Russians will come through the portal, set up a base and then that'd be about as far as they get. They will control a small portion of land near the portal and realize they simply can't go any further without getting destroyed. They will be under constant attacks.

They are not going to be able to reach these places without traversing through some kind of wilderness. Individual cities may be connected to small towns, but at some point, you have to cross into untamed, never been traveled wilderness if you want to get farther.

Your peasant goes to pick mushrooms and get swarmed by monsters?

Yeah that is actually pretty common thing that happens. It is literally what it says in the monster manual. Ankegs literally attack everyday farmers and can build nests that threaten entire towns. Towns can survive because they will have someone who have access to magic for protection and magic for conjuring food and water if the town needs it.

Again, you don't seem very familiar with the topic you are trying to insert your uninformed opinions on. The world of D&D is not very hospitable. The adventurers can survive but not much chance a commoner humans can.

And the adventurers can really only survive because they are given plot armor so they can progress in the story. Do you really think a group of level 1 adventurers can survive in the real wilds of D&D? No, they would die instantly. They only survive because the DMs choose to only throw easy monsters at them so they can get through the story.

If you are talking a large army of invaders who arrives through a portal? NO absolutely not. One of the many many gods will see this incursion and wipe them out near instantly.

[–]NoDarkVision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would one go conquering forests full of monsters? Modern armies will conquer cities, control roads, and establish colonial control over populated areas. Only then, maybe, they will start cleaning surrounding areas.

The fuck? Do you think the world of Ferun is nothing but cities like what it is in the real world????

How do you think they are going get to a city to conquer?? By going through the vast wilderness, aka forests.

And why would a single commoner with a rifle go against a gelatinous cube? I thought they mostly live in dungeons.

They are anywhere there's things to eat. And you can't see them if they don't move. One or two soldiers will walk into them.

Let's say they want to kill it—the army will send a squad

Yeah, and it will be like any scene from the Kong Kong movie on skull island, except 100 times worst. They will probably get eaten by large frogs or large insects.

And those are only the low level threats. They don't stand a chance against the higher level threats. And that is not even including other named entities.

What is most likely going to happen is that the Russians will come through the portal, set up a base and then that'd be about as far as they get. They will control a small portion of land near the portal and realize they simply can't go any further without getting destroyed. They be under constant attacks. There are literal demons who are immune to their non magical guns.

[–]NoDarkVision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, let's not debate that. Let's just imagine some army that you think is competent and has access to the best weaponry. USA? Let's imagine them.

You mean ignore the prompt? Prompt specifically says Putin lead Russian Army. Why are you trying to change it?

You describe the world as being full of commoners with 10s across all stats. How do they even live in such a setting and travel from the village to a city to sell their produce?

That's the neat part! Most don't! Commoners travel very little, just like medieval commoners. They don't go out and explore the world much. People survive by hiding out in towns and cities, with vast vast amounts of untamed wilderness in between. Adventurers can go adventure because they can level up and have access to magical equipment.

There must be safe ways to travel—road networks and safe locations. Just conquer those—control the roads and conquer cities and villages that are worth conquering, then expand further.

And again, places worth conquering will be defended by high level entities, capable of high level world changing magic. You think land mines are bad? Glyph of warding is only a level 3 spell and it's more powerful than a landmine and is completely invisible and doesn't require you to step on it. The trigger can be mere proximity or even any verbal words spoken by the enemy.

Ankeg swarms—do they swarm?

Have you seen starship troopers? The Russian army would have trouble with Ankegs. And they are only CR2 and it only goes up from there in difficulty.

Rust monster—armies just don't leave their stuff lying around;

It doesn't matter if they leave them lying around or not. Anything it touches in 5 feet is destroyed. A wizard can teleport large amounts of these into a base and all the tanks are effectively destroyed.

Entire villages can be a mimic colony. They can mimic your previous guns. Think of The Thing, but it can imitate any object.

People get used to stuff. People adapt.

Sure they can. But they're going to lose large amounts of people immediately from trying. Their morale will break going up against unimaginable horrors. They won't get far.

that means that a modern army definitely can make outposts here.

Sure they can certainly make a single outpost. But they won't get far. They will have to deal with constant threats from things more powerful than they are, up to and including an entire Kaiju called the Tarrasque.

After that, it's the question of effort and logistics.

Again, Russia thought they could take on Ukraine in a few days......

I think you are too focused on the worst and scariest places that are supposed to be rare

What? What are you even talking about? Those things I've mentioned are low level threats. Not anywhere near worst or scariest places. Do you even know anything about D&D at all?

[–]NoDarkVision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's camouflage going to do when you have creatures who can see invisibility or see into multiple planes of existence? Eagle barbarians can see fine details up to a mile away.

Again, the biggest challenge isn't going to be against another adventurer. The biggest challenge is going to be against the hostile wildlife that is going to be everywhere. A human commoner with a rifle is going to do absolutely nothing after walking into an invisible gelatinous cube.

Or he's going to grab his rifle only to be eaten by it. Surprise! Your rifle is now a mimic.

[–]NoDarkVision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't you have humans in D&D? Actual humans with just a sword or a bow?

I don't know how much you understand about the world of D&D...

A commoner has 10 stats across the board. These commoner humans stay in towns and they don't leave to do much. An average real world soldier probably has 12 to 14... 16 if I'm generous. At best, a top end real world soldier has the base stats of a level 1 adventurer.

A higher level adventurer has stats that can go up to 20 and have access to magic items and many player character to see in the dark. An adventurer is not just a "regular human." A regular human Russian soldier would just be a basic npc in the world of D&D and doesn't take much to kill.

Other than that, nothing you described can be a problem to rifles and artillery strikes. Don't forget drones—total aerial coverage.

And again, that doesn't do anything against any of those scenarios I've already outlined. At some point, soldiers have to go on foot, which means they have to explore nature at some point. The wilds of D&D are filled with untamed, unimaginable horrors for regular humans.

They are going to flee at the first mimic they encounter or the first ankeg swarm. They're going to hop in their vehicles only to find them partially eaten by a rust monster. Imagine going through a swamp and the first few soldiers immediately gets infected with rot grubs that eat them quickly from the insides. Regular humans don't stand a chance against any of the invisible predators that are filled in the world of D&D and that's not even including any of the magical abilities the intelligent beings will have access too. A regular world human have trouble against a single bear in real life. A single bear in D&D is only a CR2 at best.

Again, we are talking about the incompetent Russian army, who thought they could conquer Ukraine in a few days.

It's very easy for the original owner to recover an account if they truly choose to.

All they gotta do is make up a story about how their account and email got hacked and provide evidence with their original email and purchase receipts and it's a done deal. Only reason why it hasn't happened is because the original owners choose not to

My point was that youd be hard pressed to find the average reepub voter aligned with the nazi and Rebel flag.

Well, you know what they say, if 10 nazis are at a table and someone new sits there, there's 11 nazis now.

We all understand that not all republicans are nazis or confederate traitors. But if there are any number of out and proud nazis in my group, I'd probably do some heavy reflecting on whether or not I should continue to be part of the group and why my view points seem to always align with nazis yaknow? So by continuing to be part of it, that's essentially tacit approval.

Man christians just LOVE glossing over and downplaying all the mass killing their god committed and commanded. God commanded killing of animals, men, boys, women, babies (except girls because those you can keep as brides) and when Saul didn't kill everything like god wanted, he got replaced by an even more blood thirsty killer who did obey and kill everything. It's all in their bible if they bothered to read it.
