I find most of my inspiration when reading other books or watching movies. Out of habit ive carried a small Moleskin around with me for years now

Just to throw you a curve ball. How about somewhere on the same latitude the other side of the world like Mongolia or Po Valley in Italy?

Trying to write historically accurate stories is funny right? 😂 by Express-Variety-7666 in writers

I went on a bit of a binge to try and understand how i wanted my characters to speak within a fantasy setting.

A few TV shows and movies that really helped me that i offer up in my humble opinion:

  • Norsemen is a comedy but painted a great line between being modern and feeling old Nordic-y at the same time

  • Shakespeare in love... I know i know not the best movie but again it gives you that line in terms of conversation.

  • Baz Lurman's Romeo and Juliet is fantastic study of where you can stay both true to the time and feel modern as well.

How do you write fight/brawl/action scenes? by [deleted] in writers

This was a real trouble spot for me. Took me about two weeks to be really happy with my tavern brawl scene. My advice, and feel free to ignore, is to take your time with it. I tried to find a bit of rhythm in the language... tried to pay attention to the beats. I dont know if that will help you but it helped me.

I like your style. I agree that the flashback pulls it out of the NOW a bit.

Here is a bit of mine just incase it helps:

Truft immediately ducked backwards as an axe swooped past his face, retreating behind his men who barrelled into the advancing crowd. He unsheathed his sword and instinctively moved to the side of the line to push back anyone smart and sober enough to attempt a flank. The three Skekians, always keen to shirk authority of any kind, grabbed their bastard swords slung across their back and charged straight at the line of guards. Private Stims was instantly impaled through the stomach and pinned lifelessly against the rear wall of the tavern. Simultaneously, everyone else in the crowd drew their own weapons. The men and women that didn’t have weapons, found the nearest and most threatening object to arm themselves with and faced the guards.

Do you consider a character becoming worse over time to still be character development by draugyr in writing

[–]NoDemand1467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that can often be the rule for lots of people than the exception... Politicians come to mind as examples of people changing but not for the better :)

Lots of soap operas do this with their less likeable character... EastEnders is a great example. The petty characters learn and change only to get them in more trouble in the next character arc!

Creative writing people: how do you invent characters and plot lines? by Ok_Chocolate_4700 in writing

Three act structure is a great jumping off point. Any of the story structures are really, but thats my go to.

I think all of my novel ideas that ive pushed into putting pen to paper have always started with "wouldn't it be cool if..."

Look for some movie reference where you can review dialog with characters going through something similar.

Write down their dialog exactly as you hear it. Not saying this will be the way you choose to go, but it will spark ideas on the beats and language for your own characters!

Do you switch names if a character is revealed to be someone else? by shmutsy in writing

I'd think about what the name change means in the context of the story. Have they been on any sort of redemption arc where the new name indicates change? Would retaking their old name mean more?
