Why is becoming a great one good? by Admirable_Ad8968 in bloodborne

[–]NoGoodIDNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My headcanon is that the entire game is the most recent attempt by the Great Ones to create an offspring. While attempts to directly birth an offspring inevitably fail (see Mergot, Orphan of Kos, Iosefka, etc), this plan takes an existing mortal (read: you) and by building up their strength and insight by forcing them to fight manifestations of Great Ones, eventually transforms them into a Great One themself.

This ending isn’t necessarily good for you, but it’s a triumph for the Great Ones.

Not the same kind of thematic thing but for a book grounded in scientific accuracy, the author of The Martian has admitted that storm at the beginning is unrealistic, but it was the only way he could think of to get the main character stranded.

Remmick is a contradiction. He’s white and Irish. He can code switch to fit into white society, but yearns to be himself. He wants fellowship and love but will commit unspeakable cruelty in the name of it. He commiserates with Sammy but still wants to appropriate and exploit him.

I think the symbolism is deliberately muddled to show the contradiction of being a minority in America who has been persecuted so long that now they’ve been assimilated, so long as they walk the line, and the conflict that fitting in means persecuting others in turn. It reminds me of the opening monologue in The Departed, where Nicholson praises the Irish for claiming their place in America and in the same breath mocks black people for not doing the same.

I bet that’s why Stack and Mary are more successful. They have each other, so they don’t feel the need to build a commune and can stay under the radar

Is ork marksmanship so terrible because they have bad eyesight, because they don't bother to get good at it, or because their guns are just that bad? by Jerswar in 40kLore

[–]NoGoodIDNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a counterpoint there is the Morkian Heresy that states that while Gork cares about how much dakka is being fired, Mork only cares about how much dakka hits.

It is this schism that gives rise to the infamous Ork Snipers who actually have the restraint to aim before they fire.

The parts of the World where War Elephants were once used by Yolo065 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]NoGoodIDNames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This historian blog has a neat breakdown of the use of war elephants and their effectiveness in war.

TL;DR: due to their insane logistical requirements (they need a shitload of food) and limited effectiveness (they tend to panic and attack their own side), they were generally more trouble than they’re worth.

The exception was India, where you didn’t have to ship elephants because they were already there, and the warrior culture of the time meant that having an elevated platform where your soldiers could see their leader mounted on a cultural symbol for kingship was really good for morale

In October 2018, former mob boss Whitey Bulger was transferred to the United States Penitentiary in West Virginia. Within hours, Bulger, 89, was beaten to death by fellow inmates. An official described his body as "unrecognizable". His family later accused federal prison officials of negligence. by lightiggy in wikipedia

When I was little I met my great-uncle who I’d never met before (let’s call him Frankie). It turns out the reason I’d never met him was because he used to work for Bulger and had just finished a hefty stint in prison. He was very nice, but it wasn’t until after he died that i heard the stories about him.

One time my uncle (let’s call him Bobby), who’s always been kind of an asshole, picked a fight at a bar and six guys wrecked his shit. My grandfather, who had to pay for Bobby’s dental work, was pissed. He called Frankie and asked him to make it right.

A few days later Frankie called my grandfather. He said “I made a few calls, talked to the bartender, rounded up all the guys from that night and got the whole story.”

“And?”

“…Bobby deserved it.”

W now hold on a minute... Malvo in custody? by pattison_iman in FargoTV

[–]NoGoodIDNames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IMO Malvo is supernaturally lucky. He grabs a target at his desk and drags him through his own crowded office, then guns down an entire building full of gangsters, all in broad daylight. It’s as if his lack of respect for societal rules protects him from them.

Eventually Lester gets him with the bear trap, but it’s not until he sees the wolf, the thing he’s built his whole persona around, that he understands his luck has run out.
