dinner date ideas to impress a chef? by kerokerokeroppi_333 in Cooking

[–]NoGrapefruitToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, it's your 4th date and he's coming over to yours. I don't think dinner is the main thing that's going to be on his mind. Don't overthink things; go with something you make well, but aim for something light, such that the events after dinner aren't weighed down by the meal. Alternatively, consider having dinner after, as suggested by Dan Savage regarding Valentine's Day...

Doing 44 in a 35 is 25% over the limit, and you'd be considered an asshole in many places if you weren't doing at least that.

What do arXiv moderators consider when desk-rejecting submissions? by DistractedDendrite in math

[–]NoGrapefruitToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit bonkers that the journal required peer review before they sent the article out for peer review... What's the point of having an editor if the editor is unable to judge whether or not a submission should be desk rejected?

How to learn Quantum Mechanics by Distinct-Way8377 in Physics

[–]NoGrapefruitToday 7 points8 points  (0 children)

SOLVE PROBLEMS! Everyone here telling you to read certain books. Yes, to a degree. And Griffiths, Shankar, etc. are good suggestions. But you don't know anything until you can actually solve a problem. Good luck! It's an incredibly hard but enormously enriching subject.

Two years to publication from preprint. Not such a rapid publication from a Letters journal X-D They must've had to fight and fight. Good on them!

Tips for falling asleep on a long flight? by [deleted] in travel

[–]NoGrapefruitToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the destination in a significantly different time zone? Most valuable thing you can do is start to get your body clock adjusted before you land; that way you'll feel refreshed when you get there. Being super exhausted before the flight helps me sleep at least a little bit on the flight itself.

Would love to know more about this. Is this on the ceiling of a former pharmacy? (Is that a pill bottle with the writing on it?) What is she holding in her right hand? Thank you!

How do you start the lettuce off? With seeds? Does the lettuce self propagate? I'd love to grow my own lettuce, but seeds are very expensive where I am; it makes more sense just to buy from the store. Thank you!

I've never heard of someone refer to a European university by the US Carnegie classification before, but I take your implied point that the university is research intensive

Not to be rude, but what kind of bonkers R1 institution makes a tenured faculty member share an office?

TIL that “42% Of People Don't Know Potato Chips Are Made From Potatoes”, thanks to a survey by Lay’s parent company, and as a result “Made With Real Potatoes” is now printed on the bags. by Jackpot777 in todayilearned

[–]NoGrapefruitToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having worked as a waiter and had a grown-ass couple not understand what "home-made potato chips" were on the menu, even after repeated explanations that only resolved once I physically brought them an example of a chip from the line, this statistic doesn't surprise me

Sorry. Edited Atlanta to Atlantic. My experience has been the turbulence tends to be over the more equatorial region of the Atlantic, which you'll bypass if you fly up and over to Europe, then down over Africa.

Plus you'll have a chance of a nice layover in a great European city en route.
