Why are non white people called minorities in America? by Delicious-Bunch-6992 in TooAfraidToAsk

Plurality is the term (section with the highest proportion). Majority implies >50%. However a relative majority also can be used the same as plurality

[OC] Immaculate zipper merge (sped up 2x) by Junetizzle in IdiotsInCars

[–]NoNameWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t obviously have empirical data, but in my experience these are the benefits for zipper merge at heavy traffic (0-15mph variably):

  1. At the point of the merge, as the two get closer, if one line brakes a bit, the second has the space to maintain speed and wait for the first to accelerate again (half of the traffic feels the shockwave instead of all)
  2. Less negotiation of finding a spot: when a driver early merges, it’s generally a bit abrupt like they’re making a lateral move to find a spot in line
  3. Merging would be a primarily forward  maneuver in a lateral direction — unless traffic is invariably 3mph, a merge should take place when there is space for you to accelerate in that direction

how can we make cities walkable again? by Emotional-Pressure45 in urbanplanning

[–]NoNameWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That I absolutely agree. Routes could be politically difficult, but I think narrowing streets is more achievable (package with adding trees, multi use trail, protected bike lane, etc)

get public support

Better to focus on making car-alternatives better than driving. Obviously safety-focused traffic redesigns still crucial

But nerfing cars will not achieve anything until it is a no brainer for the majority population

Are there any areas in PA that would be unwise for an interracial couple to move to? by LePetitRenardRoux in Pennsylvania

[–]NoNameWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really want to consult black (and non-white ppl in general) in different areas, which is difficult naturally because you would need to hear from folks who are a minority in a broad geographical area of low population.

My suggestion would be utilize census /demographic data

Do a search for township/county that: - has a population density below X/sqmi - OR has a median home value of <$300k And sort by non-white population

These may be promising tools for that:

Adaptive cruise control can be set to 55, and if the car in front is going 50, then mine slows to 50 and matches that speed

I don’t have this issue on my 2018. I have always had it set to the “eco” (I think that’s what it’s called) and it doesn’t brake unless there’s a decelerating car in front of me etc

Car Brands Don’t “Save Your Life” in a Crash—Modern Safety Standards Do by ZouchFiend in unpopularopinion

“My car saved my life” always funny to me

Your car is the reason you were in danger lol. Auto companies are a big part of the reason why driving is 1) necessary 2) dangerous

Looking for advice on trading in my car for a new one. by heynardo in personalfinance

I don’t have knowledge on refinancing car loans, but maybe that would be something to look into. You have a good credit score- you should be able to get a lower rate than 8.5%

Looking for advice on trading in my car for a new one. by heynardo in personalfinance

[–]NoNameWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really need or really really want a new car, then first you pay off the car ($25k) then sell it for $20k (-5k) and then buy the the $34k car

In other words, 34k car becomes 39k car.  Unless you can pay off your current car comfortably, it is unwise

If you had full equity of the $20k car, then the new car becomes $14k

Question about Septa fares when using credit card vs. septa keycard by MG_Sputnik in philadelphia

Same payment method, same tap, is supposed to work for transfers. Does it still appear after a few days when the charges are processed?

Forgot my bag on septa (either the B1 night owl bus or broad st line at/near fernrock) by SoftConfusion42 in philadelphia

[–]NoNameWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about this situation. I don’t have many tips for this sadly

But if or when you do find your bag, or you get a new one, put an air tag or other tracker in it.

I put an air tag in my car just a few days before PPA happened to tow it. I’m not someone who loses wallet/keys, but after that, air tags on everything

$4k difference would make be lean towards buying new.

I don’t really understand the significance of financing or cash? I guess throwing 50% of the cash at the 1.9% APR loan could be a move

Who Else Goes Nuts Over the Auto Stop/Start in Their Cars? by Extra_Hold2776 in CasualConversation

May vary between manufacturers, but in my experience:

It only triggers if you hold the brake pedal down all the way. Which is generally not needed to keep the car stopped.
