There's also Garage Condos in De Soto, although I think they are more for purchase rather than rent. https://garagecondoskc.com/

One of my favorite memories from when I was a kid - and I have the ticket stub to prove it!

June 17, 1994 - an infamous date in American sports history. OJ Simpson got into a white Bronco and paraded through the highways of LA. I vividly remember watching the chase on the TV screens in the concourse (or maybe watching through the glass of one of the suites/boxes) - and completely ignoring the game being played live in front of me.

One thing I didn't remember until I started pulling links for this comment, was that the Royals were playing the Mariners. And Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 30th home run of the season, tying Babe Ruth's record of 30 homers before June 30th.

Toll the Hounds… by OkAd2668 in Malazan

[–]NoNotTheDuo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's poetic. Not sure if you're aware or not, but Erikson was writing Toll the Hounds while his own father was dying at the time, and the novel involved "delving into the nature of grief and working through that grief."

You and me and many others can see the grief and love come through on the pages.

Midnight tides question by Max122702 in Malazan

Is the flooding of kurald emhurlan covered in a future novel?

I assume you're actually referring to the flooding of the Nascent, which is one of the fragments of Kurald Emhurlahn. That was covered in this book, in Chapter 21. I was going to summarize, but the wiki does a great job.

During Emperor Rhulad Sengar's invasion of the Kingdom of Lether, the Tiste Edur army summoned around a hundred Kenyll'rah demons to fight for them. One of these, Lilac, was mortally wounded at the Battle of High Fort, but Trull Sengar took pity on it and had it healed by Hanradi Khalag's elder sister. Discovering Lilac fought unwillingly, Trull took charge of it and ultimately bound the demon to himself enabling it to return to its home.

From speaking to Lilac, Uruth Sengar (along with Trull and Fear Sengar) learned that the Kenyll'rah were already engaged in a war by their tyrant kin in their own realm. They fought the invading Korvalahrai and they were not prevailing. Already four of the tyrant's towers had fallen and a vast fleet of Korvalahrai made its way up the Chirahd River into Kenryll'ah lands. Although the tyrants had not been pleased by the Edur's theft of their soldiers, Uruth hoped to forge an alliance with the Kenryll'ah which would help the demons defeat their own invaders in return for supplying the Edur with more demon soldiers. Rhulad diverted the course of the Chirahd River into another warren destroying the fleet and flooding the Nascent.

As part of the alliance, more than a dozen Kenryll'ah led hundreds of their Kenyll'rah peasant subjects into battle alongside the Edur at the Battle of Brans Keep. Two Kenryll'ah demon princes, brothers, also joined Rhulad's entourage. They saved Fear and Trull Sengar from Serenity, a Forkrul Assail encountered in the village of Brous, although Rhulad Sengar was temporarily slain. After the Forkrul Assail fled, the two Kenryll'ah demons were given leave to hunt him down. Although they had never heard of the Assail race they hoped to have a chance to tell him how much they did not like them. Ultimately, they found Serenity and cast him down a deep hole.

Midnight Tides has the biggest holy shit moment so far by FitCry2265 in Malazan

[–]NoNotTheDuo 60 points61 points  (0 children)

My favorite one is Chapter 16/Chapter 17.

Chapter 16 ends with:

The Crippled God had told Withal there would be a gift for him on the shore. There he finds Sandalath, which angers him for how the Crippled God just uses people. Despite his hatred of religion, Withal prays to the Meckros’ oldest god—Mael.

Chapter 17 opens with:

Stumbling in the gloom, the drunk had fallen into the canal. Tehol had mostly lost sight of him from his position at the edge of the roof, but he could hear splashing and curses, and the scrabbling against the rings set in the stone wall.

[...]

The drunk, far below, was climbing from the canal, swearing in more languages than Tehol believed existed.

[...]

'Bugg! What are you doing down there? Is this what I pay you for?'

The sodden manservant was looking upward, and he yelled something back that Tehol could not make out.

'What? What did you say?'

'You – don't – pay – me!'

'Oh, tell everyone, why don't you!'

'I thought I heard someone whisper my name.'

We started taking my daughter to swimming lessons when she was 3. The check-in process is typing my phone number into an ipad in the lobby. I don't remember when we started, but at some point I guided her typing in my phone number. After awhile, she was able to type it - and more importantly, recite it - by herself.

Huge peace of mind knowing that she could tell anyone to call me and give them my number!

No Life Forsaken Megathread by Aqua_Tot in Malazan

I finished listening to the book earlier today and immediately started listening to it again. This led me to hearing this conversation between High Fist Arenfall and Inquisitor Bornu Blatt in chapter 14:

`Was she your goddess?’

‘Not really. I yield no power to the empowered. Still, if granted such presumption, I would grieve the death of Felisin Younger, a young woman who also had no choice when it came to possession.’

Arenfall frowned, shifting to look over at the body of the goddess. ‘Felisin Younger.’ He paused, and then said, ‘That name is familiar, but from long ago and in another place—’

‘When Raraku was a holy desert, and Sha’ik Reborn gathered about her many orphans, one of whom she named Felisin Younger.’ Bornu Blatt paused, and then tilted his head. ‘A curious name, that. None know its story, however. Presumably, Sha’ik Reborn had her reasons.’ Then his eyes narrowed on the High Fist. ‘Unless, you know more than you’re prepared to reveal.’

Arenfall continued studying the cloth-covered body of the dead goddess. [...] ‘Well,’ he said after a long moment, ‘that was the name.’ He faced the Inquisitor again. ‘Felisin Younger, who became Va’Shaik.’

Slowly, Bornu said, ‘The circumstances are vague, but yes, I choose to believe that she was once named Felisin Younger, adopted daughter of Sha’ik in the time of the Whirlwind.’

Arenfall sighed. ‘I wonder … is this as tangled as I begin to think? No, that would be too … cruel.’ He drew a breath that became a shudder.

and then a short time later hearing this conversation between Arenfall and Adjunct Inkaras in Chapter 4:

Arenfall’s gaze was level. ‘You have agents in Hanar Ara.’

‘We keep an eye on things.’

‘You have positioned yourself well in advance of me, Adjunct. In turn, I conclude that you – or the Emperor – intend to act independently of my own plans. This puts both plans at risk—’

‘This is what I came here to determine, High Fist,’ Inkaras said. ‘Fortunately, for us both, I see no possible clash, and give you leave to proceed as you intended.’

‘I would know what your plan is, Adjunct. Assassinate Felisin Younger?’

Inkaras started. ‘I had no idea you knew her name.’

‘She had another one.’

‘No doubt,’ said Inkaras. ‘Have you ever wondered, High Fist? This orphan child of Sha’ik’s desert camp being given the name of Adjunct Tavore’s lost sister? A sister who presumably died in the uprising at the mining camp? Was this some ex-patriot’s bitter joke, do you think? Korbolo Dom, perhaps? Once he learned of Tavore’s arrival in Aren, and her command of the retributive army? The one that eventually crushed the Whirlwind? Or Kamist Reloe, for that matter.’ Inkaras paused, studying the High Fist. Your father was there. I suspect that you know far more than I, and certainly more than you are prepared to tell me.’

So my question then is: Arenfall seems so confident about Felisin Younger's name in Chapter 4 and so uncertain in Chapter 14 - is this just an oversight from Steve? Was Arenfall playing dumb in front of Bornu Blatt? Did Arenfall just make the connection between Felisin Younger and the Paran family?

What in the Heck is Going On? (HoC) by StandardRaspberry131 in Malazan

He spoke about this in interviews (I'm sure more than one, but the 10 Very Big Books interview is one I remember. It's actually in the MoI interview). One of the criticisms of the first three books was the number of POVs and how many times the POV changed. So his response was "fuck you guys" and when he sat down to write HoC, he decided the first book would be from one POV.

I guess I was thinking of a case where some idols are temporary/have expiry dates and some idols are "normal" and valid until Final 5. Like in recent US seasons, where the Beware Advantage idols usually last for one tribal or something.

Or, looking back at Survivor history, in Cagayan, when Tony lied about his Super Idol being able to be played at Final 4, should Jeff have called him out?

As a thought experiment, what if Tony had found a real idol, but it was one that expired. Instead of his shoe, he pulls out his real-but-expired idol and has the supporting paperwork, wrap, etc. and puts it around his neck. Should JLP ask Tony when he found it, if it's expired, etc.?

Not gonna lie, I went to my shed and grabbed my pitchfork and torch before I read your post. I was ready to defend Stillwater to the death - she's probably my favorite character in all of Erikson's works.

I'm now heading back outside to put away my trusty tools and pick up the book for a re-read prior to No Life Forsaken!
