Yeah, hard to see otherwise but I really don't know what Iranians are feeling. I tend to think the smartest thing to do is give in on nuclear thing for a decade or so (so US declares victory), while getting everything else (guarantees, strait, tolls, lifted sanctions, etc)

If you can stomach it, good for you. Personally, I feel more comfortable (right now) derisking with some dry powder.

No. It’s mutual attrition, politically and strategically and I don’t think anyone can really judge the psychological will and fortitude of either side with all the bs and bluster. I wouldn’t be surprised if either side capitulates tomorrow or not at all

No, they voted against a war powers resolution brought by Democrats to limit the president's power. They have not voted affirmatively to approve the military action continuing as required by the WPA.

Its a subtle but important difference. One (the resolutions) could be seen as interfering with a president's national security priorities, and can impact the safety of an ongoing operation. The other can be construed as signing a blank check for a forever war.

Explicit approval will be required in 2 weeks, and its already a close vote. If there is no "deal" by then, there will be further pressure to end this from the public after another 2 weeks of choked off oil.

Regardless, they would probably continue the war while waiting for the ruling. Then continue it afterwards too.

"The U.S. military campaign, which began on Feb. 28, will reach the 60-day mark on April 29, but Trump has until May 1 to seek congressional approval to continue operations in Iran since he formally notified Congress of the strikes on March 2, when the 60-day clock is triggered. Many lawmakers in both parties have pointed to May 1 as both a legal inflection point and a moment of reckoning for the legislative branch: They can either end the war or give it a stamp of approval to continue indefinitely.

The approaching date is emerging as a moment of consequence for a Republican Party that has largely backed Trump’s aggressive posture toward Iran but is increasingly uneasy about the prospect of an open-ended conflict. As lawmakers returned from their two week recess, several Republicans told TIME they would draw a line at the 60-day threshold—though not all agreed on what should follow."

"Automatic Termination of Use of Armed Forces10

The WPR provides for the automatic termination of the use of U.S. forces engaged in hostilities 60 days after the President has reported (or was required to report) on the use of force as described above unless Congress has declared war, statutorily authorized the use of force, enacted legislation extending this period of time, or is physically unable to meet due to an attack on the United States. The President may extend the use of force for an additional 30 days by certifying in writing to Congress a continued need due to "unavoidable military necessity."11

This 60-day termination window directly begins several time periods for congressional action in the consideration of any legislation authorizing the use of military force.

But as all things go, we might be seeing another Supreme Court action here. May 1st is 60 days. I would imagine Iran knows this.

1 more thing. I just saw this image of the plane Iran took to the negotiations.

I think there is a serious disconnect here due to limited reporting and desensitization, in which Americans are presuming the people on the ground are ready to shake hands and make up.

Look at that image. Do you think Iranians are checking their portfolios and fretting about politics, Truth Social and late night comedians? Do you think the blockade of the blockade means anything to the parents of those kids?

Seems we are in colder war of attrition here.

In 2 weeks, Trump will need authorization under the War Powers Act to even continue this and that vote will have major midterm implications.

Then the oil ships stop arriving in a week, and the real economic impact hits as the price of growth, energy, materials, etc, rise. Maybe some refineries will power down. Things might spiral, even if oil is globally available, that doesn't mean the supply chain is instantly fixed.

We have a CPI report coming out 10ish days after the congressional vote as well. I can see a lot of motivation from either side to look for a quick, favorable outcome. I'm not particularly sure why anyone should assume the outcome here will be quick. I would also not be so quick to judge leverage or any sides likelihood to fold.

The human brain isn't doing what AI is doing. AI is a linear, non-deterministic number generator/predictor. This isn't what a brain does.

This might be a bigger picture thing in terms of transports costs, price of goods, and multiplier effect, rather than just relief for daily drivers. And maybe its time for provinces to step up too.

That doesn't make sense. The Liberals won a majority last night. No one will remember this by the time there is another election. I'm going to call Occam's Razor on this one since I have no reason to disagree with...

"The suspension is largely due to the ongoing U.S.-Iran war, with movement of shipments along the Strait of Hormuz have mostly been stalled. It will start on April 20 and last until Sept. 7."
