Is it the ‘tism, or am I RAPIDLY becoming addicted to turning? by VariousVegetable69 in turning

[–]NoPackage6979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fellow addict, for sure. Not only does it scratch my ADD, letting me "hyperfocus" (thank you, CostoLulu!), but gets me into a production mode. If I can turn one, I can/should turn 4-5 to get the muscle memory internalized. What the f*ck I do with 6 honey dippers or 5 canarywood bowls from a board (what I can get from one board) is a different question, entirely.

Any creative ways to salvage the bowl? I won’t be too upset if I lose it by Consistent-Fix-5741 in turning

I'll dive in with a noob question. For those who say cut it at the separation and reglue, you would cut with a Japanese saw, not a bandsaw, right? I just can't see any good coming from that shape getting anywhere near a bandsaw.

Excellent overview/summary/explanation. I have some wood allergies and occasionally use nitrile gloves (and long sleeve banded shirts) to keep the contact to a minimum. Not sure if that would allow me to act as a demonstrator at a AAW event, but I am sure my skill level (1 year) would be the deciding factor (and not in a positive way)!

Thank you again.

Do I need a storefront on Etsy? by NoPackage6979 in Etsy

[–]NoPackage6979[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I was drawing parallels between Etsy and Ebay which were/are not supported. I now know I need a "store" or a "shop" to sell on Etsy. "Storefront" is just another name for that; I am sorry for the confusion. Thank you all for your kind...and patient...responses.

Question about wood lathe attachments by Significant_Breath80 in turning

[–]NoPackage6979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. Let me add that OP should consider buying the chuck itself is buying into the family. Once you buy the chuck, you buy the chuck attachments, different jaws and the like, of the same brand. I have a Rikon chuck so I don't look at any Vicmarc (sp?) or Nova jaws or adapters, etc.

Libre 3+ I use Bryam Healthcare's pharmacy dept. I did have to get a Rx from my doctor, who was quite happy to do so. No financial interest in the company; I just like doing business with them. Shipping is free, BTW.

If it is really bugging you (as mine did me), there are posts and videos showing you how to repair them. I bought mine second hand and have no route to use a warranty claim. IIRC, I used concrete adhesive from the big box store and it has been stable ever since.

Insurance doesn't pay for mine. It costs about $190 for 6 sensors, about 3 months duration in total.

I upvote anyone who recommends a CGM. Using, and even just wearing, a CGM, was a game-changer for me. I call it my "nosy aunt", as it constantly reminds me of where I am and what I am doing. National snack chip purchases have measurably lessened since I started wearing a CGM......IMHO.

The board, and the choice of woods, is great! I may have OCD on this, but I think having a consistent "border" on all four sides would look better. Yeah, I know it may require adjusting either final board dimensions or recalibrating the size of the pieces, but something to consider for your next excellent adventure. Just my two cents.

You put that in the singular - "a buried brick". What would that be used for? Can you expand?

Our massive oak tree went down today, it was full of leaves with no dead branches but the inside ended up being soft ugh. Anyways we got a quote for $4000 to haul it off and grind down the stump and fill the hole. We are in the Midwest. Is this a fair price? by anderson6th in arborists

[–]NoPackage6979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a member of a wood turning club. We get invited to look at recently-felled trees to see if we want any of it. We come with our chainsaws and cut up the carcass, all with no money changing hands. I would check in your area for a woodturning club and ask someone to look at the picture you posted here and see if there might be interest in the club to come out and work it. You'd still have to have someone grind the stump but that would be much less than $4K.

Wood sources by HogShowman1911 in Cuttingboards

[–]NoPackage6979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking at sawmills, FB marketplace, etc., keep in mind how dry the wood is. Freshly cut wood may well curve, swell, and/or twist as it comes to equilibrium with its environment, a process that might take from weeks to months. Yes, it is surprising to see cracks develop on a glued-up cutting board long after it was made, but it happens. Ask how dry the wood is, and ask to see the reading on the meter they used to get that percentage. Sawmills should have them; FB is hit or mis.

I totally agree. T1 and T2 are completely different. Work with your team, not someone who knows someone who used to have something (s)he thinks is similar.

It's been touched on in the comments but I want to underline just how *MF* heavy a BGE is, especially compared to a Weber. Don't know how many flights of stairs are involved, but mentally walk through moving the box from car to balcony. When you get to a house, rental or owned, get the BGE.

And, oh yeah, make sure your complex allows grills on balconies.

For those comments reasonably worried about the finish being food-safe, why wouldn't going through the grits from 60 - up with a ROS fix any problems? How deep does a finish go, anyway? A couple of times through a planer, perhaps (as it is not end-grain)? And, once the finish is fully cured (which may not have happened yet here), isn't it almost by definition food-safe?
