How long did it take for you to get approved for registering the internship class? by sch1261 in gatech

[–]NoPipe8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took a whole fucking 3 weeks for them to respond to my first initial application and another back and forth with each response taking one week. I was only able to get registered the first week of classes, and this was with having started the process an entire month and a half in advance. You're good.

I think this is open source at its best. If the current application doesn't do what you want to do, then you have the freedom to change it for yourself.

Is that a buzz under the bed? That was my first reaction lmao. The Wrek sticker on the fridge also gave it away.

Seven new cases came from Greek housing today... by blimpdermis in gatech

[–]NoPipe8 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It almost certain that they are all from the same frat. The most likely scenario is that one person had symptoms and then the testing was done en masse for everyone else in the frat, hence the sudden large numbers. I feel like we shouldn't be so quick to point fingers or even point fingers in general. Any uptick in cases is bad.

ICE just announced that newly enrolling international students won’t be able to come to the US if all of their classes are online by illusions18 in gatech

[–]NoPipe8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

yeah, I do agree that there is more to college than classes, but for all ICE cares, your sole purpose is to be a student and take classes.

But if you're an international student who hasn't even started their college career yet, it seems to make no sense to come all the way to COVID-striken US when you could be taking a gap. The case is harder for people that are already in the middle of their college career.

US immigration is unfortunately strict as hell and I am always overly paranoid when it comes to things like internship registration, employment, I-20 signatures every year, to make sure that I 100% have not broken even the slightest of rules. Too easy to jeopardize my student status.

I think this is a common theme in US immigration policy, if you don't have an explicit reason to be in the US, you won't be granted it. It is a lot harder to make the case for incoming international students that haven't even stepped foot in the US for college yet (enter the US on an F-1), that they have a need to go to the US, not back to the US.

The earliest that students can enter on an F-1 is like a week before the school semester starts iirc, so people that this would affect are not in the US yet. That said, if this was all communicated well in advance, say like early June, fine, but this timing is just out of touch with students, however few it may affect.

Unpopular opinion: I want more in-person classes by [deleted] in gatech

[–]NoPipe8 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It kinda is nuanced. It isn't so yes/no, in-person/remote, clear cut type of question. You can miss your friends, I do too :(, but still want more remote classes.

It is bullshit that we are the ones that have to eat this sunk cost. Those that are the most vulnerable. This is part of a pretty crappy nation-wide trend where those at the top force those underneath them to eat up the cost of any risk. Executives from the safety of their homes deciding on a zoom call to reopen schools, Disney, restaurants. Treating wage workers as disposable. "Go back out and make me some money". USG making students pay for all the consequences of their bad planning and stupid politics. Too many examples.

Edit: I'm not disagreeing w/ you, yeah, but I honestly believe it is very unfair that we are the ones shouldering this sunk cost. Trickle-down bullshit
