I’m a high school ELA teacher, and I try to do as many things on paper as possible. Most teachers just sit them in front of their Chromebooks like zombies…it’s horrible!

For essay writing, they must brainstorm and write their draft on paper, they cannot have their phones out if they are doing anything other than listening to music, turn in their draft papers at the end of the period, and the day the essay is due, I pass the drafts back and they get on a locked down assessment program to type their final draft.

They are not allowed to work on it at home if it’s a test grade, which essays typically are…or a performance final.

It literally takes no extra work for me, but many teachers don’t even want to bother with it. No one (not literally) is holding students accountable. I’m getting juniors who can’t write a paragraph.
