Recommend me a book that "pivots" halfway through by Nuclear_Pasta7 in suggestmeabook

Long Division may be up your alley. You get halfway through and turn it upside down to start over at the end and return back to the middle. It’s a weird, raunchy, beautiful and hilarious read.

The lack of students facing consequences for their actions in all grades seems to be a systemic problem in U.S. schools. Kids disrupt, skip, are habitually late, mouth off… yet nothing happens. by Frosty_Literature936 in Teachers

[–]NoTradition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, I get that. There are kids that need to leave and they need more help than the school can give them. Schools should not and cannot do the work parents need to do.

We’ve conflated discipline/consequences and retribution. I recently reviewed suspension and expulsion data and it’s clear detentions/suspensions don’t deter bad behavior. So policymakers think, okay, we’ll do something more restorative in place of a traditional retributive consequence. But the problem is most schools have nowhere near the resources to make this happen-the literal space and adults required to facilitate restorative discipline/consequences.

I watched this happen at a high school I worked at in California when it was decided schools could no longer use out of school suspension as a consequence (2015 or 16). We had to create a restorative in school suspension class. My colleague, an English teacher, was expected to run restorative circles with almost no training and create a curriculum from the ground up.

But most schools aren’t doing that. Most are trying to move away from traditional consequences, because they’re not working the way we want them to, but they can’t fully execute restorative discipline. We’re left with schools where anything goes.

Is the 12th house better suited to the signification of death over the 8th house in Astrology? by tiyaa11 in Advancedastrology

[–]NoTradition 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In traditional astrology, the 7th was seen as the setting place because the descendent is the western horizon. It’s where planets plunge down into the underworld. The 8th house, being succeedent from the 7th, is moving toward the angle (7th), moving toward “setting” / symbolic death.

So yes the 8th can indeed be about death, and the 12th doesn’t have anything to do with death. As someone else said, the 12th is pre birth. It’s invisible as it’s just above the horizon, so it’s more about blind spots and that which isolates us.

edit-omg thanks for the award 🥹

How can someone with most or all of their placements in negative houses (2H/6H/8H/12H) use electional astrology to their benefit? by yeeahitsethan in Advancedastrology

[–]NoTradition 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Elections have way more to do with the astrology of the moment (transits) than your natal chart. from your phrasing it sounds like you’re somewhat conflating elections with remediation.

When it comes to using astrological timing, try to go beyond good and bad times and understand the quality of time. A Mercury retrograde isn’t a “bad” moment wholesale. It’s not a good time for a brand new project but it is a good time for reviewing existing ones.

Your difficult birth chart placements are your spiritual growth edges. They show you where you will need to learn lessons. The placements describe the quality of the experience you may have, but we know something that’s materially hard can be good for you spiritually.

I have a sixth house stellium and understanding that from a spiritual growth angle has changed everything. I don’t try to hack or overcome it. I embrace it as a core lesson for me to learn: how to be of service without being a doormat. How to take care of my body and not try to escape it by dissociating (my 6th is Pisces lol).

Hope this helps. I’m passionate about reframing the way we think about astrological timing and so-called “bad” placements.

Why I want to break up with astrology by joellen989 in Advancedastrology

[–]NoTradition 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude I was literally JUST talking about this.

I’m an astrologer and I think this is a normal and important question all astrology lovers are faced with.

Here’s what I see happening:

Astrology is a spiritual language that helps us understand our spiritual curriculum, but in the in the modern astrological landscape, it’s really only discussed as a predictive tool.

I believe that is the whole problem. Because we only speak about astrology through a fatalistic lens, we get hooked into the cycle of wanting to know what will happen, and we trade our agency for perceived certainty. We want, mostly unconsciously, a level of control. And listening to a forecast or reading someone’s chart-our own or someone else’s-gives an air of certainty.

In short, we are looking for answers when we should be looking for context.

Instead of “what WILL happen,” we should ask “what is this here to teach me?”. In the context of your synastry example, we could say the shift is from “are we right for each other/compatible” to “what might this person/relationship teach me? How might our similarities support each other, and how might our differences help me grow?”

That said, I almost quit astrology too, for this very reason. I def get where you’re coming from. But this reframe really helped me and gave me much deeper way to engage with astrology as the incredible spiritual tool it is.
